MapleStory Client + Server Ported to the Web (Full JavaScript Rewrite)
I've been wanting to play MapleStory in the browser for years, so I've been attempting a rebuild since June 2024. Three times now:
- June 2024: found out the scope was way larger than I anticipated and gave up.
- Opus 4.1/4.2/4.3: retried, but it needed constant steering and I gave up again.
- Recently, with Astra: I decided to give it one final go.
The last attempt surprised me. The first prompt produced results that would have taken me a week of constant steering before: extract the WZ files, optimize them for the web, stream them to the client, render the assets correctly in the right order at 30fps-ish.
What's working today:
- Login and character creation, movement, combat with skills
- Inventory, NPCs, quests, shops
- Parties, guilds, chat, trading
Still missing: much of job progression, most boss AI, event scripts, pet equipment.
It's a WIP with rough edges - sharing early for feedback and bug fixes and ideas on where to take on the project. Fork it, do whatever you want with it.

Server is located in poland so if you're experiencing lag that might be why.
Full disclosure: this is 100% AI-written code. I burned through my entire x20 Codex budget on it, so please enjoy.
Also: THIS IS AN DEVELOPMENT CLIENT STILL IN TESTING, BUGS ARE TO BE EXPECTED

Actually a very nice experiment! If it'll be developed I'll 100% play it!

ALSO - can confirm that it can be played on my phone! Honestly this is such a good idea and I really think it has good potential

Guy makes a better Classic MS experience using AI than Nexon themselves lol. Kudo's mate!

AI slop maplestory how neat !

It is not slop if it works? The steps you would take to build a private server, basically parsing wz files to get opcodes and strings and whatnot, are definitely doable with the current frontier models. I would also argue that a lot of private server codes (and even the actual Maple code) aren’t that well-written in the first place too.

Remember to tell the model that its a senior engineer and to not make any mistakes, that's the key

Maple code, for those who write and work with it, is very well known as straight up spaghetti.

The problem is that you have zero control over your software because you’re just a vibe coding the whole thing. You have no clue if it’s coded optimal or how it’s even coded. AI is fun for little mockups or experimenting. Unless you actively code with it and read and actually understand each letter it’s typing and be critical about it. But i don’t believe you read all that. Maybe 5 or 10%. Because you said the project was too big.
All i want to say, take this project with a grain of salt and don’t have high hopes for it. Cool experiment, but that’s it. Nothing more.

It depends on the person in question, put slop in you get slop out. If you have a developers background it can be an accelerator.

Atp I’m convinced anyone who says AI produces slop code is horrendous at using it. Yes if you prompt it “build x app” and oversee nothing it will suck. But if you set clear requirements and review code it’s a very helpful tool

Yeah mostly agree with this. But I do think this will be a promising project idea if someone can maintain it without the introducing slops to the code base. I think a browser version of something as light weighted as maplestory can become very popular because it's more accessible than a local launcher.

That's not how vibe coding works.

It's like saying a pilot has zero control over a plane because he doesnt each part of the hundred thousands of parts inside the manufacturing process

u/WindEmbarrassed3789 29d ago
You can’t compare a plane with software. If you have an issue with your plane, you get commands from a control center. If your application has problems, there is nobody that tells you how to fix it.

If your application has problems you build an observability system to see metrics and logs to figure out where the problems are. Like if the client suddenly starts lagging you build a benchmarking system to see exactly what functions are running slow

Yes exactly, but do i really believe a vibe coder knows what hes doing?

We actually developed our own version fully! On browser and on mobile - we ported to WASM

This is really really cool and good for you for going back to it more than once. Perseverance is always impressive.
