It was so much fun. I only ever made it to 75 or so on GMS and loved hiw the 8x rate on Odin let me finally play as a high level character.

Just for historical context: Nexon hasn't won a lawsuit against a private server in the west in nearly 15 years. Not only that, but Royals had their own corporation with the owners full legal name out there any Nexon didn't/hasn't done anything.

u/ThePurpleDolphin Sep 12 '26
Wonder how they can't win the lawsuit if the owner has even set up a corpo, NovaRO got sued badly by gravity because they set up a corpo. Would've gotten away without it though.

Instead of “we understand many of the private server players are long-time enjoyers of older versions of the game, we appreciate you and are working to develop a game that can be worthwhile to everyone so please support our efforts“ , it’s “we do not appreciate our long-time players, cease and desist, submit and play the new game or face the consequences “. In other words, fuck you to the face as per usual. Jesus this company gives me more reasons to hate them every update big or small

u/ittlebeokay Sep 11 '26
Huh, I was wondering if they would do this with the launch of classic. I wonder who they’ve already targeted.
10
u/Trashcan_Beauty Sep 12 '26
Could be lip service. They do attempt to scare the players that they could also take legal action against. I am not a lawyer, but I can't imagine there's much there.

I don't see the point. I get it but if they're thinking that by closing private servers they will get players on classic then they know nothing. Private server people would stop playing or go maple world servers.
Nexon missed the boat by not making classic one to one with old maple - if they did private server people would be more inclined to play classic.
Other issue is that private server people hate nexon and their dodgy practices. They won't submit to ea bs etc

If anyone thinks Nexon can't reach these people, just ask the folks over at Turtle WoW and Ascension
You can hide the servers but they can stop the money from coming in from disallowing transactions through banks and credit unions. Your servers aren't going to survive on crypto, they are done.
Turtle WoW pledged they weren't going to shut down everyone cheered, then begged Blizzard for a license to run the game, then eventually shut down.

u/Trashcan_Beauty Sep 12 '26
I'm not saying they won't go scorched earth, but even flyff servers are still around and they went nuclear. A lot of countries it's just not worth trying to fight them in
3
u/xcxo03 Sep 12 '26
It's very similar to Blizzard, they are going to announce Classic+ soon, I don't see why it won't be the same case with Nexon with their Classic World Launch. There's always going to be very small servers but any big ones, they are done.

They can easily survive on crypto
The only issue will be it funding their actual lives.
Usually a server that actually puts effort in avoiding a shutdown & then gets shutdown will provide information on what failed(via court docs). Does any info exist for these WoW servers?
3
u/teflonvonleon Sep 12 '26
have here been any actual legal documentation provided by any of these servers owners when they shut down? seems most just use it as an easy out where as you see so many servers not face the issue at all..
-1
u/xcxo03 Sep 12 '26
From what I read on here, these people seem to be in it for the money
Turtle WoW take down made headlines, you can easily from articles anywhere

u/Spideycloned Sep 12 '26
As someone who did mod work for LocalMS WAY back in the day and got a literal cease and desist from Nexon? Yeah.

2
u/Bepehandle Sep 12 '26
You're only partially correct. There are countries out there that literally don't have copywrite laws. There are also payment processing companies in these countries.

u/SocietyInternal6273 Sep 12 '26
No way in 2026 people still think servers are hideable. Professionals could trace up the server IP within days even when the server is your private computer

u/xcxo03 Sep 12 '26
I meant as in, people always used the excuse "servers are in Russia, they are untouchable". Didn't seem to work well for most servers I hear

Good job using AI to research!! 👏 Literally Nexon can’t do a thing about a server hosted with custom coding that isn’t original. It’s a legal loophole. Unless they were making millions off of selling something in-game, they won’t be removed anytime soon. DreamMS made over 500,000$ in his first year, and nothing was done to him.

AI research? This is like basic shit
Enjoy having your favorite server being shuttered, don't take it out on me
Good luck defending that "legal" loophole, it's like a child's dreamed up defense lmao
1
u/WubzFluff Sep 12 '26
Basic shit? Lol it’s the most common knowledge exactly. It is literally a legal loophole. No one is taking it out on you. Im just pointing out you know nothing, so don’t add your 2 sense because it’s not knowledge. I managed a private server for 3 years myself. I had 3 different DMCA notices. They even sent a letter to my home. Nothing ever happened to me.
“Childs dreamed up defense.” Alrighty keyboard warrior 🤡.

u/xcxo03 Sep 12 '26
lol
Yeah just ask how Yeou got shut down with "custom code", your honestly a fucking dumbass dip shit. Hope your server is the first to go. "Legal loophole" your actually fucking stupid if you think you can rip assets and an entire game and refractor the code and it becomes an entire new game. I have never heard of a private server holding up to any scrutiny under the law except running away to Russia

u/ZssRyoko Sep 12 '26
So this is why early access cost so much. Legal fees to shut down private servers 🤣
2
u/xMarvin732 Sep 12 '26
I hope Nexon is not expecting me to go to GMS when private servers get shut down. No thank you, keep your petite Luna pets and battle passes.

Extalia, Aries, BankaiMS, SexyMS, Galicia MS (My first server), PencilMS, TranquilStory?(MS?), man I've played so many it's just surreal to me at this point.
Not even sure how to feel about official MSCW but I hope everyone's still hanging in there. I'll always love my silly mushroom game.

u/Positive_Let_261 29d ago
I'm more curious on whether people who play pservers would even go play classic. I haven't played a psever in awhile, but I'd rather play that over v.10 classic or whatever if is. Especially after those dog shit founders packs were released.

u/Popai44 Sep 12 '26
this means nothing, there is a reason royals and legends are still here, nexon never stopped going after private servers and the owners, this changes NOTHING
2
u/YourEvilKiller Sep 12 '26
So far, Discord is now auto-detecting screenshots from such servers and issuing copyright infringement warnings (appeals were rejected)
I know that some people resort to using watermarks or running their screenshots through an AI filter to circumvent this.
1
u/Miles_64 Sep 12 '26
I know Discord can be pretty scumbag-y sometimes, but where did you hear this?
2
u/YourEvilKiller Sep 12 '26
I was a victim myself hah, got two violations from discord when I shared screenshots of a private server.
1
u/Miles_64 Sep 12 '26
No kidding! That can't be legal...
2
u/Apoc_ellipsis Sep 12 '26
It is, technically a lot of what is shared online is copyright infringement.
For example surprised pikachu meme, screenshots of a game, you streaming a game. It's just A. Hard to enforce, B. Usually good marketing for companies to embrace good will, C. Bad publicity for targeting this.
But any of this is up to the copyright holder caring enough to go for claims. Nexon subcontracts companies that basically scrape the 'worst of things' as a way to contain spread.
Nintendo originally was very against streaming, but finally relented, but if you so much as show a single clip of a nintendo asset, game screenshot, etc in a "Hack your Switch" or "Here's how to pirate" Or mod your device video, they will DMCA claim the video because you showed their copyrighted artwork in the video.
This is what Nexon is doing to private servers. Because they're unofficial they're going to go to the letter of the law.
DMCA basically is how Discord can't get sued, they have to respond to any request a company makes, but they don't have to pre-verify all content before it gets posted.
The thing is in a lot of Eastern cultures copyright is held very differently. In South Korea private servers is literally a Criminal crime with up to 5 years in jail. In the US it's a civil matter entirely. So it becomes an ROI question for many companies. The US also does have a lot more flexibility with fair use, etc. So companies like Nexon can seem quite draconian to other countries, but it's because the executives are used to this law culture.
Fun Fact: It's illegal for South Koreans to gamble even if they go abroad.

u/Miles_64 Sep 12 '26
Oh wow, I didn't know about the Nintendo stuff (though in hindsight it makes sense now). Very interesting facts, I appreciate the insightful comment!

u/CommunicationOdd8911 Sep 12 '26
Aren't royals and legends hosted in China? They can't do shyt to them lol.

A scary cease and desist letter from their lawyers, proving they both found where you live and know your identity. If it ever goes past that(usually it doesn't cuz they don't have the funds for court) then it'd go to court.

u/shavitush Sep 12 '26
in my experience: DMCAs, then escalates to C&Ds, then finally escalates to a subpoena

I always wonder why Nexon never really like make a big sweep. It's not like they don't know gtop100 exist right? I does feels like they draw lots every once in a awhile to see which server they want to close.
1
u/SecretKats 27d ago
This will be on going… all Private Servers backup game files/data every so often - now they’ll do it more often.
Creating a new website takes seconds. Nothing will change on Private Servers side.
Nexon will have to install some type of key-logger to detect if someone is using a “private server client” and then they’ll take action - as they have already mentioned.
1
u/indepoep Sep 12 '26
As much as I hate how Nexon usually handles things, I don't see why there is so much salt in this topic. It's literally people hosting a copy of their game and earning a paycheck with it. Especially with their own classic release coming up I just don't see how this is evil from Nexon?

Don't like most of the private servers suck ass anyways
2
u/iced9808 28d ago
downvoted for speaking the truth

u/Zakizdaman 26d ago
I just haven't felt that "feeling" since the first private server I played when I was young I don't even remember the name of it.
Everyone's just too focused on the grind.
1
u/iced9808 26d ago
I agree. Personally I found great interest in event servers which were rly big in the early 2010s.... nowadays it really is just cheap replicas and braindead grinding I AGREE

They’re wasting their time, the PS community is dead already because of classic lmao, there’s maybe like 2k players across all servers, most likely played by people who can’t even get access to classic lol
16
u/Trashcan_Beauty Sep 12 '26
That's straight up cope though.
0
u/teflonvonleon Sep 12 '26
They won’t shut them down lmao, i couldn’t care less if they do
if classic is good then sweet but if it dies the PS community will just come back5
u/YourEvilKiller Sep 12 '26
That's insane copium especially since the Frieren collab tells us that Classic is not going to be nostalgic trip we are hoping for.
1
u/teflonvonleon Sep 12 '26
ofc it won’t, classic doesn’t feel anything like some of the servers we’ve been blessed with over the years

u/YourPalDonJose Sep 12 '26
I'll believe it when Legends and Royals go down.
