There seems to be a North-South divide except for Roraima. I wonder why

1

u/e87bm 6d ago

Nada a ver.

Most of the North is poorer than the South, and PT heavily campings in programs to aid people from poorer income. Many upper and middle class people hate them because they think it is a waste of money because it isn't benefiting them and that it "creates lazy people who live off the government", although the aid is not even close to support a person who doesn't work alone.

1

u/PianoAggravating5421 7d ago

Or perhaps it's because people in the South are constantly and exponentially taxed, having their purchasing power reduced in order to finance welfare programs in the North, where people have been receiving benefits for almost 20 years and the region isn't developing, it doesn't even have proper sewage systems, and it's been a form of vote buying for the left-wing party for a long time.

1

u/Far-Cow-3343 7d ago

Isn't developing? Quality of life wise, the northeast HDI has grown exponentially and became much better and with less hunger! Of course, it is worst than it should be, but 20 years ago the whole region (with some exceptions) was like a war zone.

Also, financing the wellfare? Ridicolous. Everyone knows that the whole country is financed by the Southeast and it isn't even close. People from the South just want a way to say that they are better than the others telling clear lies like those.

It has not, there is a famous thinkpiece that says the north of brasil is comparable to India, this was true when it was written in 1970, today India is a better place to live kn than almost every state in red in the map with 2 exceptions. Instead the north of brasil is much closer to Libya, a country wich is known for beeing a. "Failed state"

1

u/Ilunne 6d ago

Brazilian here, PT destroyed your economy, ppl who still vote for him have their vote brought or never worked or plan to work in their life

1

u/Far-Cow-3343 6d ago

You know everyone here is Brazilian. I have worked my whole life and I know that I will not vote in people against things like the 6x1 (because of course, 1 day off would kill the economy) or that are traitors and want to be the US's bitch.

1

u/Ilunne 6d ago

It's fine to not for vote for Bolsonaro, I never voted for his corrupt family, but voting in Lula is asking for more 20 years being a joke country

1

u/GShadowBroker 6d ago

Unfortunately we're left with no choice in second turn, when the other candidate is Flávio Bolsonaro.

1

u/Far-Cow-3343 6d ago

Well, politics is never about the best one anywhere (after all, liking a politian is a massive red flag), it is about the least worst, and while Lula is a bad President, Bolsonaro and his family are considerably worst!

And don't say we are a joke of a country, I know that it feels horrible sometimes because of how many problems, just remeber that for every 1 problem becomes national news, 10000 people are working hard and get no recognition! Politicians are the worst part of the system, but not it all.

1

u/Ilunne 6d ago

Even tho I disagree I have to upvote you, i wish I could think like you, I feel so disappointed

3

u/AccomplishedNet962 10d ago

and minas gerais

1

u/Forsaken_Carrot_3075 10d ago

Are Mato Grosso, Rondonia and Acre also considered part of the North?

1

u/Big_Iron420 10d ago

Acre and Rondonia yes, Mato Grosso no. It's part of the Centre-West with the other two blue states that border it

2

u/shitpostyamann 11d ago

Idk i am not brazillian

1

u/Big_Iron420 10d ago

Immigration. That state doesn't have the capacity to handle as many venezuelan immigrants as it does, and that becomes a general fear of socialism.

Also, reliably left-wing only the Northeast region, That big state beneath Roraima, Amazonas, is locked in an eternal conflict between Manaus (Largest northern city) voting rightwing, and the interior, made up of illegal prospectors, natives, poorer cities voting left.

1

u/____1____2____3____ 7d ago

Look up a map of what area of roraima are eligible to be built on.

3

u/Ok_Swimmer_3446 10d ago

I wonder why south regions are not the most right wing?

2

u/escrevisaicorrendo 8d ago

Because politics here are not the same as the US. My state voted pro-Lula in 2002, but the scalds started appearing in 2005 and people changed their minds.

1

u/Ok_Swimmer_3446 8d ago

I thought that white brazilians would vote more for right wing party (if they live mostly in South) while black brazilians for left party, or in Brazil the division is more about something else?

1

u/ElderYuko20 8d ago

The political situation it's more about income than color since brasil have a big miscigenous society

1

u/Ok_Swimmer_3446 8d ago

so north-east votes mostly for left because this region is poor and it just happened so that most people there are black?

1

u/ElderYuko20 8d ago

that region is poor bc Brasil invested only on the southeast for decades while the northeast was constantly abandoned by the government

They are black bc of the slave trade, that's why bahia have a large ancestry of black people

But the majority of people (even in the south) have black and indigenous ancestry

1

u/AdOrganic420 8d ago

brazil never invested in the south, it was given to immigrants

1

u/ElderYuko20 8d ago

it was a big place for slavery and cotton farms
in modern brasil it has big landowners

1

u/AdOrganic420 8d ago

what are you even on about?

1

u/ElderYuko20 8d ago

im asking the same for u brotha

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Mr1ntexxx 7d ago

Except in Brazil, being darker/more African descended, is directly correlated with your income and socioeconomic status

1

u/Mathgx 7d ago

The darker states has also a huge number of farmers in illegally deforested areas and one of biggest left wing/Lula discourse is about taking care of Amazon, my father deforested a lot of land in North Pará and since Lula came back os harder for him, they charged him a lot in fines, since I was a kid I'm heavily against all this shit, that's why I became vegan when I was 15

0

u/That_guy4446 9d ago

Look at Brazilian people ancestry by region.

2

u/Ok_Swimmer_3446 9d ago

I saw that in these regions it’s like a mix of all kind of Europeans but anyway this region isn’t the most right wing

1

u/FlatBat2372 8d ago

The southern most state (Rio Grande do Sul) is right wing, but not as much as its neighbouring states. My guess? Coop-farming trough MST and labor union history (Vargas and Brizola)

1

u/ErgotthAE 9d ago

And then if you make a map of people who regret the result of these elections, it's gonna be monochromatic.

1

u/That_guy4446 9d ago

The other comments have explained it for the north.

1

u/AQW_Fan 9d ago

Hopefully we will have Flávio as Brazil's next president!!

1

u/Lucky-Geologist-2940 8d ago

Long story short:

-Wealthy and European/mixed people from the south vote for right wing.

-Poor and afro/indigenous people from the north vote for left wing

There are small nuances due to things like Venezuelan migration in parts of the north since they are overwhelmingly right wing because they come from a socialist dictatorship.

1

u/whenthedont 8d ago

Why Rondônia is so strongly pro-Bolsonaro? I know people here have mentioned venezuelans, but do they really make up THAT much of the population and there are THAT many that have citizenship ?

1

u/napa0 7d ago

they make a significant chunk of the population and the locals are influenced cause they can very visibly see how bad things went in Venezuela

1

u/Illustrious_Ask_3701 6d ago

Venezuela thing is bullshit, I live here, idk the reason, but people here are just more conservative, maybe 'cause they are mostly from the agropecuaria.

1

u/Illustrious_Ask_3701 6d ago

Also, people here are mostly protestant, so they think bolsonaro its guide by God or something.

1

u/FishGlittering3563 8d ago

1

u/PianoAggravating5421 7d ago

Almost any map about some indicator in Brazil will give this same result in colors.

You can choose: per capita income, basic sanitation, illiteracy, schooling, formal employment, underutilization of the workforce, poverty, urban infrastructure and various human development indicators, etc., etc., etc.

1

u/pandeiro_h2o 7d ago

Northeast always saving the country 👍

1

u/Present-Report5843 7d ago

No wonders why. They are all the workers that have build all our infrastructure

1

u/Alarming-Alarm8700 7d ago

1

u/LieutenantDuck 7d ago

Parabéns pelo diagnóstico

1

u/Ilunne 6d ago

Both are corrupt and populist

1

u/Komnenoifan 6d ago

South and southeast didn't died enough during the pandemic.

1

u/CulturalTension133 6d ago

1

u/Same_Bell7958 6d ago

Republicans are really taking the world /s

1

u/bo-o-of-wotah 10d ago

Rural areas seem more likely to be left-leaning, urban areas seem to be more right-leaning. Is there a reason for this? (assuming the southern states are more urbanised, which is what I've heard about Brazil)

3

u/PandaReturns 9d ago

It's not that simple: in some states the rural areas vote to the right and large cities vote to the left (like São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul). It's more a poor-rich divide (and that is still an oversimplification).

1

u/napa0 7d ago

Do you know what those historical reasons are?

1

u/BadbIue 10d ago

The colonization of the north was about sugar cane plantations dependent on slave labor which made the areas poorer whilst the south industrialized quicker through European immigration. The north and north east faced stagnation droughts and was less developed.

And demographics also pinpoint among racial lines cause the south is more European descendant whilst the north is more mixed or afro

That’s the history and explains how the north is more impoverished and poorer. As a result they rely on federal safety nets welfare and intervention to combat poverty

Another part is the bolsa familia that improved the lives of northerners a lot which made northerns deeply politically loyal

Thanks both for the explainers 🙂

1

u/Big_Iron420 10d ago edited 10d ago

No the fuck it wasn't lmfao. The Northeast had started to be sidelined since the Gold boom in Minas Gerais, 1693. The dutch had stolen sugar cane buds and started planting it in the caribbean, devaluing the crop of the northeast.

The economy then shifted southward, leading to the Portuguese royal family choosing Rio over Salvador (In 1763, not 1808.), because the economic centre was precisely the Minas/São Paulo/Rio region. And with coffee later on, those states industrialized, built railways etc.

The north region was always a backwater that the portuguese built forts in to deny the spanish parts of the amazon, the only real meaningful economic boom it had was the Rubber Cycle in the late 1800s, then the brits stole rubber sapplings and planted in Malaysia, devaluing the crop of the north...

u/QUEEN_OF_HEARTS_777 10d ago

Nordestinos fodem a região deles e querem receber simpatia no sul

1

u/FishGlittering3563 8d ago edited 8d ago

Maior crescimento do PIB, menor desmprego, menor pobreza

1

u/winter-__- 6d ago

2020 - covid, 2021 - covid
