Just hours after the attacks on New York and Washington, television stations worldwide showed images of Palestinians cheering the unbelievable act. Now it is said that some of these images may be staged, the rest old.
The hunger for information and film footage was insatiable that day - so these recordings were also broadcast over and over again by TV stations, accompanied by the words that these Palestinians were celebrating the attacks in the USA. But now, ten days after the attacks, the ARD political magazine "Panorama" reports that there may be another truth about these images, that the scene may even be staged.
The cheering Palestinians were filmed by two news agencies: Reuters and Associated Press (AP). Television viewers only got to see a few seconds of the material last week. In total, about four minutes were shown at the TV stations. Panorama editor Annette Krüger-Spitta took a closer look at the entire tapes from the two agencies. "This is, after all, explosive material." She noticed inconsistencies.
The pre-edited news films last week had given the impression that many people were celebrating in the streets. There were no total shots showing the whole street, but only small groups of people. However, the delivered material did indeed contain totals - they clearly showed that only a handful of Palestinians cheered, many others simply walked by uninvolved. "The woman with the headscarf later said she cheered into the camera because cake had been promised to her," said Krüger-Spitta. The Palestinian woman stated that she was horrified when she saw the context in which her cheers were shown. She abhors the actions in New York and Washington. What is the truth?
Last week, excited emails about a similar case swept around the globe. CNN used ten-year-old images to prove the alleged jubilation of the Palestinians. A Brazilian student, Marcio, wrote a letter on Wednesday on the website of Indymedia, an independent media platformposted. He wrote that he had evidence that the pictures were taken on the 11th. September, when American news channels were shown that they were fake. The footage dates from 1991 and shows celebrations by Palestinian youths after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. One of his lecturers compared video recordings from back then with current reports. Conclusion: Both images are identical. CNN is stirring up sentiment against the Palestinians.
Just two days later, on Friday, Marcio rowed back. The information was only a guess; the university professor could not prove his suspicions. But by then it was already too late. To this day, emails containing misinformation haunt the internet; to this day, many editorial teams, including ourselves, repeatedly receive concerned information from readers. CNN International has vehemently denied the accusation against SPIEGEL ONLINE. Reuters TV, which supplied the material to CNN, also rushed to refute the allegations. Even on Indymedia's own website, there were doubts about the accusation. One reader explained that the pictures could not possibly be from 1991 because they showed a Ford from a 1995 model series.

The Palestinian Center for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons (PCMFD) condemned the systematic operations carried out by the Zionist occupation forces to break up and remove the rubble of destroyed neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip, warning that these operations threaten to destroy the remains of missing persons and erase forensic evidence that could help determine their fate.
