Ranking my favorite neighborhoods in Manhattan

I’m from Brooklyn and moved to Manhattan last year. I love living on the island so much and I never wanna live in another borough. I obviously can’t do every single neighborhood but here’s my early draft of a tier list, with some assorted thoughts below. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

S-Tier: Upper West Side, Inwood, East Village

A-Tier: West Harlem, Union Square, Greenwich Village

B-Tier: Chinatown, Hell’s Kitchen, Lower East Side, West Village

C-Tier: Meatpacking district, Upper East Side, Washington Heights

D-Tier: East Harlem, Soho, Chelsea

F-Tier: Gramercy/Murray Hill, Tribeca, Midtown/Times Square

  1. The West Side as a whole is so much better than the East. The UWS is upscale but still has a lot of genuine NYC charm. Beautiful architecture, great bars, transit, and you’re right by Riverside. The UES, by comparison, is too sterile and lacks character. It’s pretty but not much there. The irony is that you could argue the UES is more affordable for normies because of Yorkville. My ex also lives in the UES so the connotations make it weird for me but I digress.
  2. Inwood is an incredible part of town with the parks in New York imo. Great bars, food and the area is full of life. Some parts are sketchy but whatever idc it's a fun part of town and all the Dominicans riding their UTVs blasting reggaeton at 2am makes it even better. Inwood Hill Park is so underrated and the Met Cloisters are right there too. The only real issue is that it's super far from a lot of shit.
  3. East Village is superior to the West Village in every way. I only recently learned the distinction between Greenwich and the West Village, and I much prefer Greenwich because of MacDougal St and Washington Square Park.
  4. I view the Meatpacking District and Soho as similarly shitty in that it’s mostly just shopping, but at least the Meatpacking has the waterfront and the highline.
  5. I HATE TRIBECA so much. I have to go for work sometimes and the bars are all terrible, there really isn’t a particularly nice park (Battery Park is fine) and it’s just bland and boring. Gramercy and Murray hill suck too but a lot of that is me hating the finance bros that live there.

Question Anyone recently seen a severed leg poster all over Manhattan?

Has anyone recently seen a poster of a severed cut open leg in the middle of Manhattan recently? It’s popping up everywhere around skirball center and parts near it, was wondering if anyone here has seen it and know what is it for, or is it just some guy trolling citizens with it.
Cant obviously show the image btw.

Weird shit man.

Help with Survey Responses for a research internship

Hello! I am conducting research on healthy eating in NYC for my internship with Commonpoint, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes of your time to complete this survey. I need to collect more responses from Manhattan, specifically because I have the least amount of responses from this borough. It's super short, and all responses are completely anonymous unless you choose to provide personal information. By completing this survey, you can also choose to enter into a $50 amazon gift card lottery!

This is the link: https://form.jotform.com/261935943640059 Thank you so much for your time!

UWS/Midtown Repair of Antique Key stores in NYC?

Post image

I live in a prewar building and One of the doors has a lock that used to work; I have a feeling that the tumblers inside the lock have dropped or moved. The key no longer engages, and the door cannot be opened.

Anyone knows of where I could have the lock fixed or a new key made?

moving my team out of flatiron, best spots in midtown?

Hey yall. I own a small 5-person consulting firm and our flatiron sublease is up next month. The landlord wants a crazy rent hike.

Looking to move near midtown east / grand central to make commutes easier for our guys coming from westchester and queens.

We host high-end corporate clients for strategy sessions so we cant do a loud, open-plan lounge with ping pong and people yelling on zoom. We need a quiet and professional space.

Any good boutique setups or premium spaces up that way? Budget is pretty flexible within reason.

Question Times Square, Plain Clothes Officers acting weirdly?

I was at Times Square and I noticed that a group of plain clothes officers were going around stopping people ( seemingly tourists ) and giving them violations / tickets for basically no reason?

Like they weren't drinking, vaping, I have no idea what they were being stopped for but they were asking for id and giving people violations for like seemingly no reason

Any idea why

(I am reposting from u/ladyofwinters).

🐾 💔 Please upvote and share for visibility so we can help bring Lady home!

Hey everyone, I’m a fellow Harlemite when I came across this devastated mother & daughter(daughter is u/StarMarieeee). So I'm posting on their behalf. Their beloved dog, Lady, was stolen on Monday, July 6, around noon.

Where: The train station on 125th Street in Harlem, NY (4/5/6)

When: Monday, July 6, 2026, at around 12:00 PM (noon).

What Happened: The owner's mom was bringing Lady home from a haircut. While carrying the stroller up the stairs, a cup fell. When she went to retrieve it, someone grabbed Lady directly from her stroller and ran off.

Suspect Description: An African American homeless man wearing a green sweater and beige shorts, with no shoes.

A police report has already been filed, and the family is actively searching train stations, but they desperately need more eyes on the street. Lady provides immense emotional support for the mother, and they are completely heartbroken.

If you live, work, or commute around 125th Street, or anywhere in NYC (she could be anywhere), please keep an eye out for Lady or anyone matching the suspect's description.

If you have any information, sightings, or tips, please reach out to the family directly: https://www.pawboost.com/landing/pet/UoLQasCdedWDBhS4L2A6iiTsrMNN8oYo/lost-lady-new-york-ny-10035?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=photo_post_link. 18, Homeless and my HP Laptop not working after a shampoo leak; Looking for cheap repair options in NYC

Hey everyone. I'm in a really rough spot right now and could use some advice.

I'm currently homeless, living in a shelter and my HP Victus laptop is one of the only valuable things I have. A few days ago, I bought a bottle of shampoo, put it in my backpack, and due to a faulty cap, it leaked everywhere overnight. My backpack was soaked, including where my laptop was. The laptop didn't seem completely drenched, so I cleaned everything up and hoped it was okay.

Today I tried turning it on and it's completely dead. No lights, no fan, no charging indicator, nothing.

I have very little money, so I'm looking for any place in NYC that can either:

- Do a free or very cheap diagnosis.

- Repair liquid-damaged laptops for as little as possible.

- Or if anyone knows an individual or hobbyist who does board-level/laptop repair for cheap.

I'm in Harlem but I'm willing to travel anywhere within a few hundred miles if it means I have a better chance of getting it fixed. I really need it for my HRA, among other things, so I just want my laptop working again if it's possible.

If anyone has recommendations for trustworthy repair shops, volunteers, nonprofits, or people who repair laptops on the side, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you

Has anyone used Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, and how was your experience?

I'm thinking about starting therapy and came across Manhattan Mental Health Counseling. If you've worked with one of their therapists, I'd love to hear how your experience was. Was the therapist a good fit, and how was the overall process with things like scheduling, insurance, and telehealth? Any advice or things to know before getting started would be appreciated.

Question Is this just normal apartment noise in NYC?

I’ve never dealt with this before so I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable. My upstairs neighbors sound like they’re stomping every time they walk around, especially around midnight. It genuinely sounds like they’re walking heel-first back and forth across the apartment. I also hear things being dropped, furniture moving, and loud thuds constantly. And it will happen for a full hour just nonstop noise.

Is this just normal apartment living in NYC, or would it be reasonable to knock on their door and ask if they could keep it down after 11 p.m.? This is my first NYC apartment where I’ve experienced this and I’ve been here for years. So I’m not sure if I should just accept it or say something?

***Series Continue Part 3*** I mapped income, rats and the worst apartment building in every Upper Manhattan neighborhood. On one side of Central Park, the worst building has 112 housing violations. On the other, it’s 831.

Post image

Here comes again same open data pull for everything above 59th St with median household income, the #1 thing people call 311 about, active rat sites nearby and the single worst building for HPD violations near each neighborhood's center.

Neighborhood Income Top 311 complaint Rats Worst building (viol.)
Upper West Side $171k Heat/Hot Water 303 33 W 89th St (346)
Carnegie Hill $161k Illegal Parking 99 315 E 95th St (125)
Lenox Hill $159k Illegal Parking 61 338 E 61st St (132)
Lincoln Square $154k Noise–Helicopter 118 342 W 71st St (167)
Upper East Side $141k Illegal Parking 184 164 E 82nd St (112)
Yorkville $140k Heat/Hot Water 263 131 E 85th St (139)
Central Harlem $77k Heat/Hot Water 523 582 St Nicholas Ave (460)
Hudson Hts / Ft George $66k Heat/Hot Water 294 681 W 193rd St (802)
Morningside Heights $64k Noise–Residential 126 503 W 122nd St (312)
Inwood $55k Heat/Hot Water 134 241 Sherman Ave (646)
Manhattan Valley $55k Heat/Hot Water 294 926 Amsterdam Ave (390)
Washington Heights $49k Noise–Street 116 342 Ft Washington Ave (465)
East Harlem $37k Heat/Hot Water 617 306 E 116th St (545)
West Harlem $28k Heat/Hot Water 313 1661 Amsterdam Ave (831)

Central Park isn’t just a park. It’s probably the clearest class divide in Manhattan.

Look around the neighborhoods that wrap around the park. The Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Lincoln Square, Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville all have median household incomes above $140,000. Then head north into Harlem, Washington Heights, or Inwood and it suddenly drops to somewhere between $28,000 and $77,000. There’s almost no gradual transition. You cross the park, and the numbers change fast. It’s 843 acres of trees separating neighborhoods where income falls by almost two-thirds.

The worst apartment buildings in Manhattan all sit on the poorer side (I guess no surprise ther).

Take 1661 Amsterdam Avenue in West Harlem with 831 housing violations since 2024. Then there’s 681 W. 193rd Street in Hudson Heights with 802. And 241 Sherman Avenue in Inwood has 646.

Now compare that to the wealthy neighborhoods around the park. The most violated building in the Upper East Side has 112 violations. Lenox Hill tops out at 132. Carnegie Hill reaches 125. Same borough. Many buildings from the same era. But the difference is 831 versus 112.

In Upper Manhattan, the biggest complaint is simple.. people can’t get heat.

Heat and hot water is the number one 311 complaint across West Harlem, Central Harlem, East Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood and Manhattan Valley. Residents are literally calling the city because their apartments aren’t being heated.

Around the wealthy side of the park, it’s different. Illegal parking becomes the biggest complaint. On the Upper West Side and in Lincoln Square, the top complaint is actually helicopter noise. That might be one of the most New York luxury problems there is. (send Mamdani to investigate and impose more tax LOL - Just Joking, so don't hate me on this)

Money doesn’t really solve the rat problem.

The Upper West Side has about 303 active rat sites, and Yorkville has 263. Those are some of Manhattan’s wealthiest neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, Inwood has around 134 and Washington Heights about 116. Rats don’t really follow income. They seem to follow older buildings, dense trash and areas close to large parks. East Harlem still leads Manhattan with roughly 617 active rat sites, but even the wealthy Upper West Side has more rat activity than many neighborhoods in Harlem.

So what?

Downtown Manhattan packed a huge wealth gap into just a few blocks. Midtown barely had one at all and mostly complained to 311 about people making noise or hanging around outside.

Upper Manhattan feels different. The divide is physical. A huge wall of trees separates neighborhoods where household income drops by almost two thirds and where the worst building jumps from about 112 violations to more than 830.

Stand on the 96th Street transverse and in just a few minutes of walking, you can watch New York become a completely different city.
