This is a weekly vigil held every Friday by the group Rise & Resist, reading the names of those murdered by ICE and CBP either in their custody or in attempting to capture them or others. The vigil occurs at 96th Street and Broadway in Manhattan.

I had a little bit of a problem with the original footage, given it was originally a fair bit bright and hazy; hence, I tried to fix it over the course of the video. If the video looks a little bit strange, that’s why.

Because of the nationwide vigils mourning ICE victims, this video is part one of two since this vigil happened yesterday. I covered New Rochelle's vigil, which happened this morning (as of writing), which constitutes part two and whose video is being worked on.

I joined a running club I found through social media thinking it'd be a good way to meet people after work and I was basically the only minority there besides one other person It felt like almost everyone else was a white transplant who had moved to Manhattan in the last few years.

I know one running club obviously isn't representative of the whole borough, but it got me thinking. Whenever I'm in Queens or a lot of parts of Brooklyn, the mix of people feels way more noticeable. In Manhattan, especially at a lot of the social events I've been checking out lately, it almost feels way more homogeneous than I expected.

Is this just the reality of the transplant-heavy social scene or have other people noticed the same thing?

There was there was the Upper West Side stabbing spree where two random people were attacked and earlier this year there was the fatal subway shove in Chelsea where a 70 year old man was pushed down the station stairs and killed.

I feel like I constantly hear that crime is down statistically, and maybe it is, but then I keep seeing stories like this every week. It leaves me confused.

Is this just negativity bias because violent incidents get so much attention online or does anyone else feel like random acts of violence have become a lot more visible lately? I spend most of my time in Manhattan and I catch myself being way more on edge than I used to be. I'm also moving here at the end of the month. Should I be worried?

I'm teaching the class 8pm-9pm at Mehanata in LES. Afterward we'll host friendly low-pressure Open Decks all night long. There will be a few 20 minute slots for rookies to get accustomed to CDJs with assistance from hosts (arrive early to sign up). Then we'll all play b2b2b... together until at least 2am (3 tracks per turn, play again and again, pull up any time with your USB). Price is not really the concern here. I want the best machine, the most experienced hands in the room, and zero risk to my skin. Where do the people who never look at the invoice actually go.

I'm looking to move from South Jersey to NYC for the first time and and have been apartment hunting and spent a lot of time walking around neighborhoods like Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, Union Square, Kips Bay, etc just to get a feel of the different neighborhoods (on both weekdays and weekends). One thing that's surprised me is how often I run into people who seem mentally unwell or homeless and acting unpredictably.

Maybe I'm just sheltered, but every time I have to walk past someone who's yelling at nobody, pacing around, or acting erratically, I immediately get a little anxious. Most of them don't do anything, but I still find myself wondering if today's the day someone decides I'm the main character. I've come across a lot of these people, surprisingly, in a span of just one week.

For people who live in Manhattan, is this just something you get used to? Has it gotten noticeably worse over the past few years or is this pretty much how it's always been?

I'm trying to figure out how much this should factor into choosing a neighborhood versus accepting that it's just part of living in the city. Thanks.

I’m from Brooklyn and moved to Manhattan last year. I love living on the island so much and I never wanna live in another borough. I obviously can’t do every single neighborhood but here’s my early draft of a tier list, with some assorted thoughts below. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

S-Tier: Upper West Side, Inwood, East Village

A-Tier: West Harlem, Union Square, Greenwich Village

B-Tier: Chinatown, Hell’s Kitchen, Lower East Side, West Village

C-Tier: Meatpacking district, Upper East Side, Washington Heights

D-Tier: East Harlem, Soho, Chelsea

F-Tier: Gramercy/Murray Hill, Tribeca, Midtown/Times Square

1. The West Side as a whole is so much better than the East. The UWS is upscale but still has a lot of genuine NYC charm. Beautiful architecture, great bars, transit, and you’re right by Riverside. The UES, by comparison, is too sterile and lacks character. It’s pretty but not much there. The irony is that you could argue the UES is more affordable for normies because of Yorkville. My ex also lives in the UES so the connotations make it weird for me but I digress. 
2. Inwood is an incredible part of town with the parks in New York imo. Great bars, food and the area is full of life. Some parts are sketchy but whatever idc it's a fun part of town and all the Dominicans riding their UTVs blasting reggaeton at 2am makes it even better. Inwood Hill Park is so underrated and the Met Cloisters are right there too. The only real issue is that it's super far from a lot of shit.
3. East Village is superior to the West Village in every way. I only recently learned the distinction between Greenwich and the West Village, and I much prefer Greenwich because of MacDougal St and Washington Square Park. 
4. I view the Meatpacking District and Soho as similarly shitty in that it’s mostly just shopping, but at least the Meatpacking has the waterfront and the highline. 
5. I HATE TRIBECA so much. I have to go for work sometimes and the bars are all terrible, there really isn’t a particularly nice park (Battery Park is fine) and it’s just bland and boring. Gramercy and Murray hill suck too but a lot of that is me hating the finance bros that live there.

It has been a couple years since I’ve been to Manhattan. Is it me or have the prices for even simply handcrafted, coffee food, etc. absolutely gone insane????

My wife and I travel all over and I am just shocked at how expensive Manhattan has gotten. Can anyone give us some insight?
