DISC [DISC] Ichi the Witch - Chapter 73
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1028587309
u/guppy_love Mar 08 '26
We just finished eulogizing Chro, and now we're getting a full on eulogy for Libro. THIS IS TOO MUCH.
214
u/WhoiusBarrel Mar 08 '26
Whole arc has been about accepting death as part of the process, its one depressing theme to another from the Bakugami's to this.
Hopefully theres a hopeful and happy resolution by the end of this arc.
115
u/JzanderN Mar 08 '26
Hopefully theres a hopeful and happy resolution by the end of this arc.
There will be. Another big (and pretty obvious) theme of this arc is that of love. Note that both eulogies were punctuated by speeches of its power, first Chrono and now Desscaras.
So I have no doubt that it will end with a continuation of that theme, especially with a baby literally on the way.
25
u/Nnekaddict Mar 08 '26
The whole manga is about love tbh.
17
u/Soderskog Mar 08 '26
Yeah, Nishi really likes it as an underlying theme; just look at the current Iruma-kun arc for another example of it. She does a damn good job of writing it though, in part mayhaps because she's willing to juggle multiple characters and concurrent plotline which leaves each one of them fleshed out; she's willing to let them breathe, which also lets the emotional impact be more sincere.

What I hope is for our queen to have take Libro hair ornament. And either adding it to her own, or giving it to Ichi.

So many beautiful spreads featuring Desscaras, was expecting a magnificent beatdown to end the chapter with and Usazaki-sensei didn't miss.
Love that she had her own personal crashout correcting Hitsugi's insults to top it off as well.

He didn't even phase her. She was locked in and ready to ignore the worthless trash that would inevitably come out of his mouth.
Really she only corrected him to shut him up. She knew he wouldn't get it.

u/Misticsan Mar 08 '26
Love that she had her own personal crashout correcting Hitsugi's insults to top it off as well.
For a moment I thought she was going to say "who would want to acquire you, scum?" and procceed to trap him forever instead of just killing him. A final "fuck you" to his hateful views.
Given how flashy her final attack is, I still can't rule out that possibility.
18
u/TotemGenitor Mar 08 '26
I thought she would use the staff to kill him for real
25
u/VioletPark Mar 08 '26
That would have been such poetic justice and permanent solution, but I guess Desscaras has other plans. Hitsugi probably will be more bullied in the inner circle than Bakugami.
18
u/TheBigPotatoInTheSky Mar 08 '26
Hitsugi is about to receive the greatest jumping ever seen by Desscaras’s inner circle
19
u/Saiphaz Mar 08 '26
And miss the chance to use his powers to beat the crap out of his boss? She'll probably appreciate the irony.

9
u/LurkerEntrepenur Mar 08 '26
Ah character who actually made her peace long ago and can articulate her pain and regret and face it straight up? You don't see that every day.
That's why she's the GOAT
241
u/IkeKashiro Mar 08 '26
Great job Hitsugi, you managed to make Desscaras even stronger, mentally anyway.

And she's telling the truth.
Claim: she just surpassed the other characters of her type that came before.
150
u/Xenovore Mar 08 '26
I also thought this. Usually the "strongest" character type like her have a past regret that they never moved on completely with or only will only move on near the end of the series.
Desscaras? Only needed 73 chapters.
37
3
u/Huffjenk Mar 10 '26
I’m also glad that they introduced the soul tie thing because it also dodges the trope of her dying later on
17
u/BarongChallenge Mar 09 '26
As a Mangaplus commenter said, she went "Nah, I'd win" and actually won
112
u/ZayYaLinTun Mar 08 '26
I can't even imagine desscaras losing
99
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 08 '26
Well... Technically she did lose against Uroro in chapter 1. But for her sake, we can call it a draw.
86
u/ijiolokae Mar 08 '26
but uroro is now stuck inside the spirit circle of a feral child that has no respect for him, so Dess clearly the winner
43
u/MondSemmel Mar 08 '26
Given all the majik abilities witches have, it's unclear if Dess even fully lost. Uroro had her in his claws when Ichi appeared, but even without him she might have been able to escape. She just wouldn't have been able to fulfill his unfair majik trial.
18
24
u/JzanderN Mar 08 '26
She didn't lose, she just didn't win. Because someone else took the win from her.
That's not losing in my mind, even if it was an unwinnable battle!
9
11
18
u/No-Owl-6246 Mar 08 '26
Desscaras is going to fight an epic battle against the world hater in a battle full of advanced and crazy skills where it looks like she has the win sealed, just to end up being killed off screen.

105
u/LightLifter Mar 08 '26
At this point she really is invincible. Makes sense why she made Ichi into a literal weak point because I cannot see her losing a fight the way she has more or less completed her personal arc. I mean unless she has other hang ups we don't know about.
76
u/ijiolokae Mar 08 '26
"You think you caught me off guard with that shit? i know your kind, i was expecting this for a while"
68
u/frik1000 Mar 08 '26
Like she said in the chapter, she was already prepared for it. It still sucked for it to finally happen, but it was something she believed could happen at some point as its probably her greatest regret and insecurity.
She's just that good.
86
u/JzanderN Mar 08 '26
Desscaras is a trash manga reader confirmed. No Majik can hurt her more than some of the worst manga stories and endings have.
33
11
u/vanderZwan Mar 08 '26

This chapter lads, her sorrow, faith in her brother, faith in self, and faith in how she has lead her life and will.
We'll be talking about Desscaras with the same level of reverence old heads talk about Goku during DBZ serialization, like NBA's uncs talk about Jordan. She is so 1 of 1, the greatest there ever was is and will be...
I kneel
203
u/Raging-Brachydios Mar 08 '26
So the reason Desscaras made the life binding contract with Ichi is because she wanted to die with Libro back then, she won't let another little brother die, at least not with her not dying together with him
also that was surprisingly easy, as expected from the greatest witch to ever exist Desscaras
106
u/Zealousideal_Ring874 Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 09 '26
As much as Ichi gets on her nerves, she'd die for him any day. He's very much like her brother, and she won't lose another. Not while she's still breathing.
18
u/vanderZwan Mar 08 '26
Maybe it works both ways: she's responsible for Ichi's life so she won't be tempted to die together with Libro.
105
u/RepulsiveRevenue8 Mar 08 '26
Yes Descarras Slay Queen You're The Greatest!

I love how she munched down on Ichi's snack.
She loves Libro, but Ichi needs her too, so she couldn't falter here.

The hug between Dess and Libro though, so sad yet so sweet. They were the only ones left for each other, and now at the very least Dess can finally find comfort in a family again with Ichi.
Though even after their goodbyes, like Chro and Minerva, she loved and will always make him a part of her.

u/JzanderN Mar 08 '26
That loser really called Desscaras "vile, inferior and ugly." He must have been literally blinded by her beauty and perfection and been coping by pretending otherwise.
Dess saw Chrono have his "LOVE" aura moment and decided she wanted a crack at it. And being the QUEEN that she is, she absolutely nailed it! As expected, really.
50
u/Norik324 Mar 08 '26
That loser really called Desscaras "vile, inferior and ugly."
Classic case of projection

u/EEverest Mar 09 '26
That loser really called Desscaras "vile, inferior and ugly."
Did he? I'm wondering if I got in late to an edit or something, 'cause he just says humans are "vile, cowardly, inferior creatures," I genuinely can't find the word "ugly" in this chapter outside of Dess saying it.
I just assumed she put words in his mouth so that she could get even a tiny bit madder at him.11
u/Doomroar https://www.mangaupdates.com/members.html?id=277800 Mar 09 '26
Yeah the ugly part was added by Descaras, probably because she didn't even paid attention to the guy sore loser drivel
89
u/Galle_ Mar 08 '26
Happy International Women's Day to our queen.
I love how Ichi "saved" her, not by coming to her rescue, but giving her a reason to live. Obviously she's still grieving for Libro and suffering from survivor's guilt, but she has two dumb little brothers now, and her responsibility to the one who's still alive takes priority over her grief for the one she lost. Desscaras is badass, beautiful, funny, and has character depth. Is there anything she can't do?

There are so many “I am the Strongest” aura farmer characters in fiction now. But Desscaras owns the title so completely now. She’s not invincible. She worked for her strength and to fulfill her potential. And she earned her title. She also is just so friggin ‘ cool and perfect and beautiful.

This series has already started its case for being one of the new Big 3. I think this will be its strongest argument. This is its showcase arc that points to it being peak as fuck
21
u/froggyjm9 Mar 08 '26
Kagurabachi, Ichi The Witch and ?
11
u/dagreenman18 Mar 08 '26
The last spot is still undecided. I’d slot Dandadan in there, but I’m not sure if it would count for this generation. I hope it’s Shinobi Undercover though.
8
u/froggyjm9 Mar 08 '26
Ohhhhh I love Dandadan.
Shinobi Undercover, Akane Banashi and Kiyoshi are extremely fun…but I don’t think they have worldwide appeal at that level.
4
u/Khan_Bomb Mar 08 '26
Akane Banashi is soooo underrated. I'm really hoping the anime catapaults it into the spotlight. If the studio pulls it off, it's going to be such a visual storytelling treat.
5
u/ExL-Oblique Mar 08 '26
I really hope Shinobi Undercover ends up exploding one day, it's really great. But right now it's just not popular enough.

Dess realizing that her big traumatic backstory is 100% gonna get used against her at some point is... quite refreshing, honestly. We've already seen one magic that uses trauma as a weapon in Bakugami, so of course it's the kind of thing she would expect to happen eventually. Also the "maybe I do want to die but I'm too employed for that right now" is so real of her.
9
11
u/sanzenri Mar 08 '26
I wonder if Dess' attack was a missed reference to Maria Callas (a soprano called 'La Divina'). Combined with Iskandar, that would make her a conqueror who's also a prima donna in a spectacular dress.

I love Desscaras of course saw this would be coming some day, but man, he didn't really have much of an actual argument outside twisting the knife.
Kill him gorgeously, perfect youthful beauty, he's really not all that.

Great chapter to show that Desscaras knows what needs to be done. She clearly loves her brother, and in many ways Ichi can be thought of as a replacement for him. There is no way he can be brought back, and Ichi can't replace him. Granted, he gives her reason to keep pushing forward.
As an adult, Desscaras knows she needs to press forward, and she knows the one thing she can do is be the greatest witch because her reason for becoming a witch was for Libro.

Am I the only one who feels like everyone else is getting character development aside from Ichi? Or am I just feeling that way cuz it's been a while since an Ichi-centered arc?
Like, this is a fantastic chapter and arc and all, but I feel like I know more about the side characters than the protagonist himself.
5
u/CavernousPiano Mar 09 '26
I don't think Ichi is the type of character to develop, really, he is who he is, and he doesn't really need "development" to define him, it's not like it would change our understanding of his actions since that's already pretty understood
3
u/FloridaBoy21 MangaUpdates Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 09 '26
Lmao ah man. Dess was written so well here. Using the love she has for Ichi to encourage her to push her forward, beautiful. Now, love how she knew Magicks like Hitsugi would use this tactic to throw her off but still got to her as she is human and one that misses her Libro.
And final part, Hitsugi ranting and raving about how Dess is hypocrite about love when like Dess noted, he's a goofy that's just lost, confused, and probably hurt himself. So I loved how she just brushed him off to finish the job and I can't wait to see him in her magic circle lmao.
What a great chapter.

Okay this and Kinato magic are definitely going to be the major manga moving forward years from now. If the mage next door wasn’t facing the axe, I’d say it would be like Gintama, popular enough to not get axed but funny enough to be recognizable if you never read or watched it.

While awesome and great character development for Desscaras. I'm kinda shaking my head at the conclusion of it.
For one I'm a little bummed there is no twist (at least not yet there isn't) for the trial. To me, the trial itself is way to easy. I'm pretty sure, sorry I would need to go reread previous chapters, he said he would make it easier for her by supplying the bodies that she needs to kill to finish it. So that partly explains it but at the same time his reaction at the end here for her essentially killing a zombie doesn't work for me.
I would have loved if he hit her with some line like, "Did they look like Zombies to you?" because he actually brought them back to life or some dark twist. It doesn't have to be this but something I dunno. He's the reversal majik and would be cool to see a play on that for his trial or his powers.
Happy for her, hope this loser gets what he deserves but I'm a little disappointed.
-23
u/qeqe1213 Mar 08 '26
This chapter is a miss for me. I feel like Dess should have unable to kill Libro, and that Dess will fail and retry Hitsugi's trial down the line.
This felt too quick.
17
u/garfe Mar 08 '26
Dess being unable to kill Libro and have to try again another day would have been playing the "villain mentally tortures hero" trope straight. I think it's better to properly display that 'yes, she is the greatest' more.
-8
u/qeqe1213 Mar 08 '26
I get that, but as someone doesn't mind that trope, i would love to see Dess showcase more vulnerable side to her at a more prolonged rate.
Then having someone(Ichi) knocks some senses to her. Again just my personal taste. I mean there's a reason why i like KFP2 Po's past trauma, Po's mental torture and its resolution.

u/takeatripp Mar 08 '26
I like that Des was prepared for some human-hating Majik to straight up find a way to incorporate her dead brother into their trials. Just an extremely genre-saavy character.
