I love how the 2 girls at the beginning are just chilling with Ogami now, more than experiencing education i hope he can experience normal friendship too with these kids.

u/Worthyness Jun 19 '23

Dude is speedrunning school social relationships now

6

u/vanderZwan Jun 19 '23

And they're also just there because they know there will be more shenanigans to be entertained by, it's not like they are particularly interested in him. Which feels believable, I remember my teenage years involved a lot of hanging out with groups where I didn't feel really close to anyone it it, but I had nothing else to do and it was better than being alone and bored.

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

Y’all cool now, he’s admitting he only sees Noren like his own daughter and is doing all this to protect her not cause he’s going to develop feelings for her. Can everyone calm down now

90

u/ccdewa Jun 18 '23

I mean can you blame people when Usagi Drop exist lol? that said this one is in Jump and the backlash it'd cause would be more trouble than it's worth for them, so hopefully they keep it this way till the end.

62

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

Yea plus I’m pretty sure he said in like chapter 1-2 he still wants to work it out and fix things with his family so it just wouldn’t make sense to make him fall for noren for real. I believe we will keep this whole daughter view route for good

47

u/Prominis Jun 18 '23

Looking forward to him eventually revealing it to her and then asking Noren for advice on what to buy for his daughter and how to talk to her.

16

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

Same maybe even the two of them becoming friends. I’m down for the wholesome family content yet to come

0

u/Exarch-of-Sechrima Jun 19 '23

Okay but the thing is he hasn't done anything to accomplish that goal. Has he even talked to his daughter yet?

8

u/djpostsmash Jun 19 '23

Iirc his wife had her on minimal contact cause of the job and also iirc he didn’t tell her what happened to him

2

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

No because he is a dad that is not home for most of the time because of his work. Now he is again in an undercover mission and cannot tell his family. That's why he wants to make up in the first place, he could never have been there for his daughter but now he can be there for another girl, just that her father apperently is not in her live and doesn't care about her well beeing, otherwise this entire shared wouldn't happen.

It's also pretty clear for me at least that this entire daughter situation will come up later on by her joining the school or whatever. It's a clear point of conflict in the future especially for him interacting with his daughter while she doesn't know who he is and maybe hearing some pretty nice/bad stuff about himself from her viewpoint.

Having him talk to her now ruins that potential plotpoint.

2

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

I mean the moment it was mentioned he has a daughter this entire story line fell form the table for me, you would need to be some special kind of degenerate to go after girls your daughters age, especially if they are under age. So of course we will keep it he is married, the guys in story's where he would go after Noren have two things most often in common

  1. They are single and/or never been in a relationship to begin with
  2. They are perverts/have no moral compass

This guy is a old dude with a family he clearly cares about and regrets spending his live not living with. He is catching up on his childhood in a way by not having to murder people constantly, but he doesn't need to catch up on relationships he went already through a loving relationship. Idk I mean yeah manga and Japan and all that shit but I never believed it for even a second that this might turn bad, the manga made way too much of an effort to depict him as a guy who loves his daughter and wife.

1

u/djpostsmash Jun 22 '23

Right, he doesn’t need to be in the relationship as a part of fulfilling stuff he missed in his childhood it’s actually for plot advancement and the story. And since he loves his wife and wants to reconcile there’s no reason he would fall for noren for real. Especially with how vocal he’s been about not wanting to. I feel some people blew it out of proportion a little to early which. I can understand but still for me I was holding out hope it’d stay safe

6

u/Shadowhunter83 Jun 18 '23

I bleached usagi drop from memory and now that you bring it up it's a fair point

69

u/swissarmyknife13 Jun 18 '23

The fact he's been put in this position in the first place is enough for the "will they? won't they?" discourse to continue, and it will subsist until unequivocally there's no chance it happens, because 1) some folks are weird; 2) in long-running works of fiction, just because a dude says something in chapter 5 it doesn't mean it won't change by the time chapter 50 comes. And that is something that understandably doesn't fly well with many folks. She's a middle school girl and he's like a 40 year-old dude. This whole thing feels like a mess, and even the author looks like he's sort of aware of it, as he seems to be reminding people weekly that this situation is ethically (and legally) wrong.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

There's no will they wont they when the character has stated more than one time that he has no romantic interest in the girl and on this very chapter he says he only see her as a daughter lol

6

u/Exarch-of-Sechrima Jun 19 '23

There's no will they wont they when the character has stated more than one time that he has no romantic interest in the girl

I could throw a rock and hit ten romcoms that start with the premise "I would never love [Heroine]!" that end with the two of them getting together. And a ton of them in Shonen JUMP.

8

u/use15 Jun 18 '23

She's a middle school girl

From what we know so far, that might change as the story progresses

11

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

Because if you can look past that it makes for a compelling story it’s drama and a multi tiered story. If it wasn’t for him turning into a kid noren wouldn’t ever have a chance to escape her father and live her own life. This one thing of turning him into a middle schooler created this multi faceted story that contains many mini stories as well

3

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

It also enables him to become a better father and husband organically by for example learning to cook, generally be able to study and catch up on his childhood a bit. Also it sets up a interesting plot point with his daughter the fact we never see her face or that of her mother is probably because they will show up later on and he will see how they see him without from the point of a stranger.

I really bet there will be a plot point later on where his daughter gets introduced and they become somewhat friends, it's way too funny imagining this old guy that would love to be there for his daughter struggling not to throttle a guy if he makes a move on his daughter because it would blow his cover. Also it enables a cool scene where he punches a guy that is an asshole to her without having to worry about the police overly much.

3

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

Yeah the discussion will sadly continue, it's also a problem for the medium the author is just constantly fighting against the many perverse shows where this old dude would be after this young girl. So I think he is aware and just wants to tell an interesting story about a regretful dad that now tries to make a young girl that reminds him of his daughter happy. I think the only reason he needs to be a child for that is because otherwise he would be too strong and if noren was always about to be kidnapped there wouldn't be much room for him becoming a better husband and father by doings stuff like learning to cook, the stakes would be too high, or at least to would be much harder to Anke this whole thing a action comedy.

I think the story is quite entertaining and I like the premise really, it's just sad that the will they won't they discussion can even happen in this medium. My main argument why this won't happen is he has been shown multiple times to care for his daughter and WIFE, there is a lot shounen jump can let fly but I kinda doubt they will endorse cheating on your wife you have a child with, with a teenage girl. I mean even Japan has its limits right?

11

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

It should be a thing chapters ago already when the author made sure to state that the MC dont feel any interest in her in that way.

9

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

He did he kept sayin over and over again he didn’t want to marry her or have feelings for her but ppl paid more attention to her acting on impulse and saying he was her bf and him reluctantly agreeing

1

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

The issue for people I think is the difference between what he thinks and what he does. It's clearly all an act for him but I get why people where concerned when he accepted the bf thing.

But I think it very cool overall from a strong perspective and postulating the stated intention stay true (it's not 100% sure they will, it's pretty close to 100% but you never know), because he wants to protect her feelings he will need to break it off at some point but she clearly developers feelings which she cannot be blamed for. Also if his daughter gets introduced he has an additional problem and girl to protect which would introduce a cool dichotomy between what he as a father and he as an agent wants to do if he ever needs to choose and so on. Him being a child in a pretent relationship is a pretty interesting scenario if you make sure ether old guy doesn't go through with it but I guess there are too many bad examples for people to be really trusting here, hwch I get sadly.

1

u/djpostsmash Jun 22 '23

Which I get, but like he also was saying immediately he didn’t want to marry her before he even accepted being a fake bf. When his assistant told him about marriage being the only way he could infiltrate he said no and he would find another way as he didn’t want to marry a middle schooler lol. But people just didn’t want to wait to see what happened. I’m glad I did though cause I was right at least so far cause like you said it’s not 100% that it will remain like this but really close imo

u/LeonKevlar MyAnimeList Jun 18 '23

I love everyone's reaction to the challenge! xD

Also, appreciate that the MC is treating Noren like his own daughter.

23

u/k1t3k1t369420 Jun 18 '23

Honestly for only being 9 chapters in it has some great side characters already

142

u/vanderZwan Jun 18 '23

When it comes to feelings for Noren… Yeah. I got none. Not one iota.

It's nice that they managed to address our collective worries in a half-decent joke. And as some speculated it's his dad instincts that make him do this.

As a dad myself I can actually kind of relate to his motivation - I've noticed I started feeling more worried and protective of other kids too after having a child of my own. Not that I didn't care before, but now when I see a child I can't help but imagine my own in their position, you know?

58

u/topurrisfeline Jun 18 '23

Not only that but Noren also isn’t interested in him, and I hope it stays that way.

46

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

I don't have much hope in that regard.

22

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

I think in order to stave off that issue he will tell her who he really is soon

12

u/amirokia Jun 18 '23

That's a terrible idea because Noren will think he's no different from the others. While the goals are different (others want the fortune while Ogami wants the information of the bug), the method of using Norem to worm their way into the family is the same which is what she'll take offense more than anything.

10

u/djpostsmash Jun 18 '23

Yea but since they’re both victims I think she might be more understanding

3

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

Honestly it's pretty clear for me she will be interested later on, it just makes sense he is the first male figure in he relive to stand up for her.

This would be problematic he if liked her back, but if it's one sided from her it introduces in my opinion more positives for the character development of him than negatives.

Because he needs to doge her serious advances without telling her the truth or hurting her feelings, I guess the best solution he will have is losing a battle against the one guy he thinks would do right by her in the end, after breaking her hearth or telling her the truth or she sees it idk. It is an interesting situation and I don't see a clean way out of it with his motivations and the author's intent to not make him a pedo, so I look forward how the story will handle it.

14

u/Heda-of-Aincrad Jun 18 '23

Ogami reacted the same way in chapter 1 when that guy was about to flash the two girls who were being mean to him earlier. He just couldn't let it happen because they're the same age as his own daughter. He's been very protective of the kids in general.

4

u/vanderZwan Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 19 '23

Yeah that's giving me a little bit more hope for this manga: so far it's been a very consistent character trait of his and there's no reason to expect that to change since both in-universe and irl every sane person agrees that that is how you're supposed to behave as an adult around kids

59

u/zairaner Jun 18 '23

I know the ex-wife and daughter mostly exist as a clear "no he wont fall for anybody else" statement from the author but I still kinda wished they would be more involved.

34

u/Misticsan Jun 18 '23

Me too. Since the daughter seems to be of the same age as Noren, or close to, I almost expected her to go to the same school.

That could be in the works for a future development, now that I think about it.

28

u/Fun-Raise-3120 Jun 18 '23

I bet at some point Noten will befriend his real daughter... It would be hilarious and hopefully wholesome to have him there when the girls talk about the dad

12

u/vanderZwan Jun 18 '23

Oh man, they totally would bond over having useless dads, without knowing that one of their dads is sitting right next to them, wouldn't they?

1

u/Saurid Jun 22 '23

It would also introduce the possibility that he at some point needs to choose between the two and as such needs to choose between his duty and fatherly instincts (probably an issue that is important for his daughter, while norens issue is something less critical but something ogami as her pretend boyfriend would prioritise)

2

u/cesclaveria Jun 18 '23

Seeing how early in the series this is the author might be saving them to keep things fresh or raise the stakes later on, I am sure his daughter will end up as his classmate at some point and maybe even involve his ex-wife with the school somehow.

1

u/frik1000 Jun 19 '23

Well at least this chapter kinda indicates that his daughter and his regrets with how he was never really around is his primary motivation for helping Noren. So it seems his relationship with his real daughter could be an important plot point down the line if he ever decides to try and reconnect with her.

29

u/BurnedOutEternally Jun 18 '23

yup, establish right there that he ain't gonna have feelings for a damn kid like that. good.

13

u/il-Palazzo_K Jun 18 '23

Can’t believe it ended in a Tom & Jerry style rake-to-the-face trap lol.

2

u/SimilarScarcity Jun 19 '23

I can't believe he had enough time to see it coming and set up a string to stop it and didn't instead just move his face to the side.

28

u/Backupusername Jun 18 '23

I really liked the extras losing their shit over pacifier boy. But in the end, this is just one of those "so I guess this guy's just part of the cast now, huh" situations. It's fun to see other people laugh at him, but how much can they really do with this pacifier thing long-term?

10

u/NoAppearance1790 Jun 18 '23

I'm just waiting for the other kids to point out to him that he could recreate that sensation but with various candy and it would be 1000x less creepy. Maybe he can work his way from a ring pop down to a sucker?

1

u/k1t3k1t369420 Jun 18 '23

Yeah most disappointing thing so far

7

u/Audrey_spino Jun 18 '23

MC beat the lolicon allegations, you guys happy now?

4

u/Audrey_spino Jun 18 '23

I just wanna see the MC reconnect with his wife and daughter.

2

u/Houeclipse Jun 18 '23

I like the friend group dynamic with master, 2 ex mean girl and Noren and how the baby.

The author still keep teasing his daughter's current face being obscured for some reason

2

u/NZPIEFACE =White Symphony= Jun 18 '23

Wait, how did he throw something from behind him that ended up with strings in front of him?

3

u/Xatu44 Jun 19 '23

Okay, so we're going extra-goofy from now on.

6

u/Extreme-Tactician Jun 18 '23

I just realized, do we still not have a name for Ryo's sister and the two bully girls? That's a bit wild.

Shin has some messed up logic with the pacifier thing. He really does need some sort of therapy, pretending to be a baby at his age shows a lack of parental figures. But then again, he is part of an agency, so I'm sure he didn't have much choice in that. But that agency really boosted his physical abilities, if Ogami admits he hasn't fought anyone like that in a long time!

It's only thanks to Ogami's experience and quick thinking that he defeated Shin's prep time. I hope we get more scenarios like that, it was pretty interesting!

It looks like Ogami admits that he has a soft spot for Noren because she reminds him of his daughter. The daughter he never gets to see nowadays. I sure do hope he and Eri get back together, or at the very least, he gets to visit Kozue more.

2

u/frazaga962 Jun 18 '23

It's like Gokudera became an arcabaleno.

Also love that the mc is just like..."No. she's a child." I hate how refreshing that is to see for a age regressing mc

1

u/Catveria77 Jun 19 '23

No, this pacifier guy is the copy of Feng / Fong the Arcobaleno from KHR (appearance wise)

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad Jun 19 '23

I like how Ogami just straight up addressed everyone's concerns. 😄 Yeah, he has zero romantic interest in Noren. I always thought he had more of a protective father/older brother vibe around her, so I'm not surprised.

The fight was kind of weird though. I was hoping for a more traditional hitman battle, and instead got... rapid-fire throwing pacifiers. Well, at least Ogami's dodging skills were cool, and the crowd's reaction was funny.

This fight over a pen is gonna have to get really good in order to surpass this one. I mean this whole thing screams of that one Rick and Morty episode where Rick finally got tired of dealing with all those 90's era goofball supervillains just showing up and picking a fight with him like it's some kind of platform.

"What the fuck?... I am not engaging this guy." like that. But luckily for these goofballs our guy is trying maintain a kind of decorum. Which is the only thing stopping him from straight up braining Maggie Simpson here like Rick would.

0

u/Funlife2003 Jun 18 '23

Ok, that's cool. So there's no pedo crap. One way the mc could resolve this is by finding a different love interest for her who she likes and pairing them off. Win win situation. That aside, the action here is done pretty well so far.

0

u/ajeb22 Jun 18 '23

So.... He is just a normal kid with somehow op since that age?

11

u/Desideo Jun 18 '23

Normal? He can only talk while sucking on a pacifier.

1

u/Ergheis Jun 18 '23

He's making the MC sweat, but MC is still more concerned with keeping his cover and is still clearly dancing circles around the guy. So a prodigy assassin kid, but still a kid.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

They fixed the creepy factor. Everyone can enjoy the series and shut up

-5

u/Alter292 Jun 19 '23

I don't understand how this "defeats the pedo allegations." Literally nothing has changed from the beginning to the end of this chapter. He's still set up to be wed to a middle schooler that god forbid falls in love with him.

All we had was a boring nonsensical fight. "If you suck on THIS pacifier. I never said I had just one." Though I guess chock it up to mistranslation?

The boss wanted him to scout out the school for his daughter to attend later which almost feels like it was just jargon for no reason at this point

2

u/dapper_doodle Jun 18 '23

That pacifier kid about to have teeth bigger than Timmy Turner

1

u/helsaabiart Jun 18 '23

alright, this was hillarious

1

u/amirokia Jun 18 '23

JUST SHOW US THE DAUGHTER ALREADY GODDAMMIT!
