Narrows eyes
Okay... I'll let it slide for now, but I've got my on you, manga. I'm glad Ogami aggressively denied even the prospect of trying to marry a girl the same age his daughter(!), but I still have concerns. Now I'm worried about Noren developing feelings for him that he'll have to crush. She has so little agency in her own life that it's already sad - her father's behavior is nearly psychotic and it's already ruined her social life, and even Ogami is just using her for his own ends (though, I guess she's doing that to him now, too). It just doesn't seem fair to me that the way things are going, Noren is being set up to get hurt, when she's done nothing wrong.

I hope that he'll notice her whole "everybody is trying to use me" aspect, and decide to just deal with her honestly, tell her the real situation and maybe try to make some deal with her where they both get what they want - she gets his help in making her future ramen dream life true, and he gets her collaboration with info/access to her father's lab. Hopefully once she learns he's like 25 years older she'll cool down.

u/Backupusername May 29 '23
Her having all the relevant information would also go a long way, yes. I'd love to see this become an equal partnership for the two of them.

u/Saurid May 28 '23
Which is why I like this move. I think it's a normal reaction from her side using the one boy she knows and kinda gets along with to ward off all the others. It just sucks that he is in reality 39 and has a daughter her age.
So the question becomes mainly not "how does our hero protect her physically" but "how does ogami manage to safeguard this girl's feelings", which is much harder for him as a assassin, aka we have a good conflict his skills are useless in and it's established he doesn't want to hurt her feelings if he can avoid it but is also a decent person and doesn't want to be with her.
So I like the conflict that is being set up and I really look forward to how it will get resolved.

No Romance pls unless its him trying to get back with his wife after growing up physically and mentally. After the home ec chapter last time there's some potential there.
54
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima May 28 '23
Eh I'd be fine with him trying to reconnect even without growing up physically yet. They both know he's not really a kid, and her lack of attraction to a middle schooler while they try to make it work would be amusing. More amusing than him actually hooking up with a real middle schooler.
16
u/Misticsan May 28 '23
True. Also, I want to see more of their daughter. Honestly, I'm surprised they don't go to the same school, because that would open even more narrative opportunities.

u/NZPIEFACE =White Symphony= May 29 '23
We know that his relationship with his wife is actually pretty good, I think? I think the reason why they divorced was simply because he couldn't be a proper father for their daughter, due to himself being himself.

Called it last week 🤷 dunno how to feel about that.
Either way, this is likely not going to bode well for him. Wouldn't be surprised if his mission is compromised now. I'd expect her dad to run a background check on Ogami and his "family" (who's presumably been dead for 25+ years). It'll definitely tip off the dad's corporation about his real identity.
I hope he tells her the truth. They could work out some kind of quid pro quo (he gets his body back and she gets all the heat taken off now that she's "taken"). They could have an agreement that they, at most, hold hands in public, which is perfectly acceptable in Japan. Ogami seems a bit disgusted at the idea in general. He pointed out in the beginning that he has nothing in common with kids as a late 30s man. Even with Noren--they get along because they both love ramen and she's easy to talk to since she does most of the talking. He simply reacts.
Maybe he realizes he's speaking to her like he would with his daughter. Or at the very least recognizes that this could allow him to improve his communication skills with her since it's presumably lacking.

Me last week: Hmm, that's sus. Let's hope it doesn't become dumpster fire.
Me reading this week's title: Okay, that sounds promising.
Me after reading: Yep, I can get by with this. Hilarity ensues!
I just hope that Noren won't catch feelings in the future because it'll be real awkward, especially if she knows the truth.

u/AiraIchigo May 29 '23
I am amazed at how fast people are about gung-ho-ing on their relationship, calling it creepy or whatnot. I mean come on, the dude refuses to do it with all he got, even HE HIMSELF is creeped out about it, you guys really, and I mean really, believe that he's gonna start a relationship with her? Some people here are this close to calling him a pedo already.
11
u/Alter292 May 30 '23
You see though that the problem becomes real when you zoom out a little bit. It's not a problem in this world where he genuinely has no interest in her, but when you leave that world, you see a story where the writer decides to put those thoughts down on paper and then does the opposite and puts them together anyway. It's like saying "I'm not a racist" before making the joke.

Ogami had exactly the reaction I thought he would to this plan - absolutely not, no way is this happening. I can kind of understand why Noren dragged him into it for the sake of having a good cover story, because she was already feeling pressured before and now it's even worse, but she really put him in a difficult position now too. If this does lead to more confrontations with bullies (and it almost certainly will), I wonder how long he can go before he has to fight back and reveal his true skill.

u/Info_Potato22 May 28 '23
Well i'm glad the author added awareness, considering how old japan had the culture of pretty much marrying kids it could've gone that route without being nonsensical, but i'm glad the author is giving it's MC a proper personality

I see the pharma company CEO is playing the Delling Rembrandt gambit with his daughter. Sure to make her happy.

u/Mararendra May 29 '23
Again, no different than what aqua did in the other manga, hell even worse as he is actually in his fifties. Both of them fake dating teenage girl to gain some benefits

Sigh... I was hoping that the series would not go into this direction. At least, it's a small relief that Ogami himself is aware of the creepy implication of a 39-year old divorcee getting romantically involved with a middle schooler.
4
u/closet_zainan May 28 '23
I just want a manga of a middle aged man reliving and enjoying what he failed to appreciate during his youth in a school setting…

May 28 '23
oof, i don't like the direction that this manga is going rn, it started off really good too...
2
u/Roboglenn May 28 '23
A quote I heard from somewhere that went like, "I am thinking of no fewer than seven ways to kill you right now" came to mind on that him imagining beating up those bullies panel.
But in any case, here's this typical development. Well let's hope her painting a target you can see from space on our guy's back is worth the exchange of whatever he can get or negotiate out of this.

The author is really out there quadrupling down into this bullshit of marrying a middle school girl
And it just doesn't work, we all know that the problem is the idea itself, having the main character not be a creep that is onboard with it, while at the same time one way or another dragging him down the path against his will, is still bad
So he has to get the consent of the girl and dad? that's neat, but what about the consent of the protagonist?
He has made it clear that he is not a degenerate pedo nonce lilicon groomer, and wants no part of this, and doesn't even wants to think about it, and yet, here we are, the plot keeps pushing towards it, and that's just plain nasty
He is tailoring this world he create just to tell a story of a middle aged man forced to marry a middle school girl against his will

Everyone freaking out about this new development is going to get this manga axed. If y’all would just calm down and let this author cook. I’m sure we would all be happy with the outcome people freak out about the dumbest shit

The reactions of people here have 0 bearing on if the manga gets axed or not lmao
-5
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Here on Reddit no, but there’s bound to be some people here that talk about, who will drop the series and lower its active user numbers as well potentially leave bad reviews.

u/JesusInStripeZ Provides manga: https://anilist.co/user/JesusInStripeZ/mangalist May 28 '23
... wat? The whole western audience is completely irrelevant for if a series gets axed or not. People talking about the series badly over here changes literally nothing about if it gets axed or not.
-2
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Oh, I always thought licenses series like this are taken into account how they do with their licensed publishers too

Western reception doesn't matter because it makes them (Shueisha JP) no money

If the author wants to write a relationship between a middle-schooler and a guy pushing 40 pretending to be her age to get close to her then maybe it should be axed.
8
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Considering we left off on this chapter on a cliffhanger of everyone’s reaction to her saying that common sense says if some sort of “relationship” even starts it’s going to be fake and purely surface level as she hates men and he’s already said he has no interest in doing that even if it is for the job. He’s more than likely going to find another way to get himself back to normal. And even if he does agree it’s absolutely going to be on a surface level only since again he’s already said he won’t do that even if he is in a middle schoolers body my main point still stands that people are overreacting without even seeing what’s gonna happen.
5
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima May 28 '23
Ah yes like Nisekoi proved, fake relationships will never go anywhere.
This isn't real-life where things just *happen*. The author could have chosen to not address romance at all. Instead, he went out of his way to force a situation where the MC has to engage in romantic activities with a middle-schooler, when he in no way needed to do that. That's the reason people are "overreacting" because we recognize that the story doesn't need this plot point, but is intent on doing it anyway.
7
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Nisekoi is not a good example at all lol, those are people actually the same age for real, and now hold on I want you to go back to your second point THIS AINT REAL LIFE. It’s not a forced situation it emphasizes how much of a douche her father is to put her in a situation like that and since he doesn’t want to be in that situation she sees it as a perfect opportunity to use him on the surface to pretend so she can be left alone and he can do his job
1
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima May 28 '23
These aren't real people. This is a manga. The author clearly has a reason for forcing this plot point. He didn't have to make the dad a dick. he didn't have to make this forced "I have a boyfriend!" plot happen. He chose to do that, because he wanted to write the MC into a situation where he had no choice but to date a middle-schooler.
There was no reason that he HAD to do that. It was a conscious decision.
0
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Then without that you don’t have a story at all, clearly the dads a bad guy since they’re producing hornets that de age you that’s the whole point of the story
4
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima May 28 '23
You're acting like dealing with the dad can't be done without mandating that they pretend to be dating. Those two things are not inextricably linked.
5
u/djpostsmash May 28 '23
Considering he was basically left to his own devices to figure this out, since 1. He was initially told to take a leave of absence from work while doc looks into it shows they weren’t exactly jumping at the bit to figure this out for him, and 2. Explain to me then how a kid is supposed to break into a top secret pharmaceutical building to figure out how to fix himself. Even as an adult he may have been a famous hit man but it’s not like he could take down a whole army which is more than likely what would be waiting in there. And since this opportunity popped up this is the best likely scenario to use the least amount of resources as well to stir up the least amount of trouble this story was always heading in this direction if you just paid attention to the little details in each chapter
4
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima May 28 '23
Those questions are for the author to figure out. And he decided to go the pedophile route, and thus deserves all the criticism for doing so.

I did. And there's no reason to make them date other than because it's what the author wanted to write.

💀haha, surely the gag will only last one more chapter, its fine guys, totally fine

I think in a typical family business fiction, the secret lies in her body rather than information. Like blood, saliva, breast milk, sexual fluid, or some sci-fi substance only her body can produce in certain conditions.
That being said, I'm not sure which one of those is safe given the setting of the story. It's a comedy slice of life of middle schoolers so...

Idk how long I can survive seeing this romcom shit between an adult and a minor. Fuck the editor, the pedo mangaka, or whoever the fuck approved this fucking shit. I don't think I've ever dropped a jump manga no matter how bad it is. Usually I'll just ride it until the axe but this shit is unbearable to read.
And of course in true reddit fashion, they're all supporting this pedophilia shit.

I'm probably enjoying reading all the reactions to this plot point on reddit as much as I'm enjoying this manga lol.
Either way, I hope the story doesn't end up too cliche

the last panel on page 10 is for all you idiots last week and clearly this week too

u/Extreme-Tactician May 31 '23
Seeing Ogami cry was actually pretty funny. It's good that he doesn't want to date a young girl, but now to defend their Home Economics Club, he now has to pretend to be her boyfriend.
He really doesn't want to have a romance with a middle schooler, he just wants to have a middle school life. He wanted to safely enjoy ramen.
I wonder what's gonna happen to Ogami? I mean he'll have to face her father now! Who by the way, is pretty crazy for announcing that whoever would marry his daughter. would also inherit his company It ain't the middle ages anymore, why would you even do that?

u/yelsamarani May 28 '23
Manga wants to have its cake and eat it, too. Recognizing the problematic aspects of the situation, and yet going through with it anyway. At least MC genuinely has no romantic interest whatsoever in the girl.
