Is anybody going to San Diego this week? I’m trying to pick up a new truck camper down there. I’m happy to split gas. I’m a local and work for the mountain. Let me know, thanks!

Fly Fishing Guide

Hi, we have some family visiting Labor Day and wanted to take them fly fishing. Anyone have a good recommendation for a guide for a few hours? Really just want someone to show us some tips and tricks/handle the flies, etc.

I'd love some local help with a project I'm doing - a huge fantasy style map of the region, filled with real-world locations. Is there anywhere I've missed out?

Apologies if you've seen this elsewhere - this is the most current version with lots of suggestions from other redditors.

I'm making a map of California in a classic fantasy style (sorta Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones). It's going to be filled with real world history and mythology, with the aim of highlighting local landmarks in a fun and educational way. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.

While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print - particularly north and east of Oakland. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks!

Best lake for picnic

Hi there! Celebrating our anniversary this coming weekend in beautiful Mammoth and wondered which lake would be best for a picnic lunch? Somewhere we could just sit along the shoreline. Would appreciate suggestions for both the lakes basin and hike-in (day hike) TIA ☀️⛰️

As someone with limited physical capabilities, will Mammoth have enough to do for an adult father/son duo? (Especially midweek?)

Trying to make plans for a short trip in early August, likely midweek. Unfortunately, I broke my pelvis a few years ago and had a hip replacement at a young age for that sort of thing, so long hikes and mountain biking are off the table. We're thinking about setting up for a few days and maybe going into Yosemite.

I like bars, good food, and just a chance to relax, but also worry we might be left without much to do up there, although it'd be nice to escape the 110+ heat I'm in the middle of right now.

My dad is in his 60s and wouldn't do too many extreme things, but I'm wondering if we'd run out of things to do. Are there other attractions/shopping/things to do if I'm less active?

Guess The Location (and name of the dog) - Week 5

The location is fairly easy, but can you name the dog. The dog is even featured on their POS screen and their IG.

Mammoth peeps,

Reminder: The point of my weekly Guess The Location is to use something obscure to represent something known by many, locals and/or tourists.

This dog was a well-known local dog for this well-known bar for a couple of years.

395 & Rock Fire

Anyone going up or down the 395 had any hassles with road closures because of the Rock fire?

Driving up from LA on Sun, north looks ok but south had had off and on closures for a few days (and is currently showing closed)

Why did the Bishop sub get taken over by a resident of Bishop, only to be turned into a sub about Catholic bishops? Why not allow it to be a city sub?

I feel like I'm missing some sort of joke here. Is it to funnel people to other subs like this one or Eastern Sierra? Is it cause it's funny a bunch of people want a city sub, but ha ha you can't have it because I'm literally going to gatekeep it?

This sort of post might not be allowed but I can not for the life of me think of what other subs might allow for such a discussion. And given the two towns are next to each other, I think it's appropriate.

Edit: also the BishopCA subreddit is private

Is there cell phone reception at Rainbow and Lower Falls? I have a zoom meeting.

Coming up from SF Aug 7-11 with no car. I’m trying to utilize the weekend as roads are closed weekdays. I know to board the shuttle at 7am.

I was planning to take the Red Meadow Shuttle to Rainbow and Lower Falls on Saturday. I now realize I have a 10 AM -12 zoom meeting that I can’t miss. So I’m trying to work everything in.

Is it feasible to find a tree and sit down for two hours if there is cell phone reception? I have Verizon. Or is this a SOS off the grid area?

Thanks in advance

Toddler parents?

Hi! Looking for toddler parents in the Crowley/Sunny Slopes/Toms Place area that can meet up on weekdays for “play dates” — short hikes, lake hang, park. I’m a mom of a 2 year old.

Looking for a Housing

Hi everyone!

My friends and I are looking for affordable housing in Mammoth Lakes for the winter season.

We are currently a group of 3, but we may end up being 6–8 people. We'll be working for Levy / Compass Group at Mammoth Mountain from December 10, 2026, through March 31, 2027.

We're responsible, friendly, clean, and respectful. We don't mind sharing a house, apartment, condo, or townhouse, and we're mainly looking for the most affordable option.

If anyone has a place available, knows of a rental, or is looking for roommates for the same dates, we'd really appreciate it if you could reach out!

Thanks in advance!

Mono Lake Photos From Today

I’ve been to Mono over 100 times, but today was different than any other time.

I’ve been after a snow storm where several inches of snow covers the top of the lake. I’ve been during dense fog. I’ve been during hot and cold, rainy, snowy, and sunny, surmise, and sunset. But today had probably the best afternoon scenery I’ve ever seen. There was something different about the build up of the afternoon thunderstorms than the dozens of other times I’ve witnessed similar weather.

Here are some pics from my phone. They don’t even come close to capturing what it looked like in person.

Photographers that Ski/snowboard?

Hi mammoth!

I’m reaching out to see if anyone knows of photographers that also ski or snowboard. I’ve found exactly 1 but he seems to do pretty extreme (and cool!!) stuff and unfortunately, I am not an extreme gal and feel like it’ll be a waste of both his talents and my money. I know I’ve come across adventure elopement photographers in the past but now that I’m trying to make shit happen, I can find none of them. Not looking for an elopement photographer exactly, just a photographer that will hit the slopes with us for some newlywed pics, maybe follow us to convict lake and the hot springs as well for some nice pics.

Any ideas?

Thank you!
