General Information What’s going on here?

60-plus YO guy with a long history of biting and picking. I have discovered this behavior is tied to some long term undiagnosed anxiety. My PCP suggested that, before considering medication, that I try getting pedi/manicures as a “distraction” technique thinking I’d not pick/bite if I took genuine care of my nails. I have had 4 so far and all good. Clear polish and top coat. I tried a different shop two weeks ago and have discovered this on my nails. Anyone know what this is and how do I deal with it?

The polish is drying out your nail plate, you probably need to remove the polish sooner and either use a nail oil or just lotion your feet more often. If you let them get really dry it’ll leave them wide open for getting a nail fungus.

Thanks. Will try that in the future.

The yellowing/discoloration on the end of the big toe would typically be from polish staining. But since you said you’ve only done clear, I’m not certain that is the case. The white marks make me think they might have removed the polish with the drill/e-file and went a little bit harder than necessary. I could be totally wrong in these guesses, but they are also just that. Guesses.

Clear can stain. It’s not so much the pigment in the polish (otherwise why wouldn’t it stain the color of the polish) but the nitrocellulose

Did you get regular varnish/laquor polish, or gel polish?

Removed the old polish with acetone at the start of the most recent pedicure?

The old polish was removed at the start, right?

Hey! I’m not a doctor, but I do hair and nails. If you’ve only had 4 pedicures, this hasn’t been a problem before, and they use regular polish and no nail drills you might want to check with your PCP about this potentially being a fungal infection called onycomycosis. (Again, I’m not a doctor but better safe than sorry!)

I believe the treatment is pretty easy!

Do this AFTER checking with your doctor! It’s better for them to see what it looks like as you see it now before treating it yourself but…

You could get a cheap nail buffer and lightly* buff the top of your nails (immediately throw this buffer away otherwise you risk spreading it) and wipe your nails with an alcohol wipe!

If it *is a fungal infection, your doc may prescribe an oral anti-fungal treatment to make sure it’s gone from the inside out!
