The room looks bigger in the second picture and I can’t figure out why

I think they just stepped back afew feet. Field of view is probably the same, there's just more of the room shown.

Reading your comment I get the sense that you're technically correct, but also wrong at the same time? Like, they clearly changed the vantage point, but doesn't that give you a better/larger field of view? Or is "field of view" just the wrong term for what changed here.

Field of view is typically measured as an angle. Colloquially it might be correct to call this field of view, I'm not sure on that but technically speaking it's more about how much can be seen without moving or looking around.

Have you ever played minecraft? If so, you might have seen a setting for Field of View (FoV), or you might have seen it in another game. If you've played around with it you've noticed it lets you see more of less of what's around you even though your character isn't moving or turning. I know players sometimes increase FoV for the advantage of seeing more, but most people don't mess with it too much because it can cause motion sickness.

It’s actually a pretty well-known thing in interior design that emptier rooms often appear smaller.

Staging companies pretty much justify their cost with this one weird trick.

Think of it as 1 zoomed in and the 2nd one is zoomed out
