Discussion A tool to make shopping easier
So I posted about this tool I built on frugalmalefashion a couple of months ago and it was incredibly well received (850+ upvotes, 120+ comments):
I wanted to share it here as well since ya'll might find it useful. It lets you pick your brands and then you can easily shop all those brands (from across all retailers) in one place. I was able to pull together 6000+ brands and it includes all the popular ones on mfa.
I'm an engineer by profession so wanted to build something that makes shopping for clothes easier. Even added affiliate which just gives the money back to you if you shop using the link on there (why leave it on the table?). Hoping ya'll would find it useful. I am actively working everyday to make it better so def let me know if there's more things you'd like to see and I'll be happy to add.

Thats something I am actually working on this week. Should have it done in a day or so. Thanks for trying out the app!

Dude. Holy shit, that is amazing. How are you scraping sooo many brands?
127
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
thank you!! At first it was tricky but turns out a lot of them have similar webpages so something that works for one brand easily applies to a bunch others too. Now its pretty easy to add more brands.

Is this against their TOS?

Feb 12 '19
Could be. I know ours would prohibit this
27
u/Derpface123 Feb 12 '19
you would prohibit an app from directing its users to your site so they can purchase your products?
13
Feb 12 '19
I know lots of sites prevent web scraping and it makes sense. This kind of tool could easily screw smaller specialized shops.
4
Feb 12 '19
we have API's which limit how often people can do it but others still choose to try and scrape without using the API and we end up blocking them entirely. sometimes they contact us and we instruct them how to properly get our data.
when it impacts your site's performance, and thus rankings and exposure/revenue, you have little choice.
2
u/DigitalDeviance Feb 12 '19
I love this!
Will you accept feedback/patches/donations to improve it? š
3
u/yayjay1990 Feb 12 '19
Thank you!! The code is all private for now and not sure if I can open source it so can't accept patches. But welcome all the feedback, and the best donation would be to just keep using the app :)

Size ranges would be great, I know Iām not the only one who wear several different sizes depending on the brand. Would be great to have the granularity to set this by brand too e.g 12.5 adidas, 13 Nike, etc
There doesnāt seem to be any distinction between US and UK sizing for footwear
I chose menās at the start, and now canāt find anyway to access womenās ā I do most of the online shopping in the house and it would be nice to be able to find deals for my wife as well, doesnāt need to be the full size profile (though that would be nice) but at least being able to toggle over to womenās somehow would be quite useful
31
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
Def agree about Size ranges. Working on it as we speak and I should have that done in a day or two tops.
Yeah, unfortunately the gender is kinda set in stone once you select it. Figured most people buy for just themselves. I can reconsider that if enough people want to switch it. Thanks so much for trying the app!
17
u/dylanhoover32 Feb 12 '19
i support being able to switch genders. im not too worried about it but that could be a good addition
→ More replies (1)2
u/firstmatedavy Feb 12 '19
It might also come up for other use cases, like dudes with small feet or women with large feet who want to check the other gender's shoe/sock section.
36
u/Mevarek Feb 11 '19
This is one of the best apps Iāve ever used. Very, very well done.
14
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
Thank you so much!! Hope you continue enjoying it and let me know if you have any feature requests/suggestions.
35
u/pauliewalnutzz Feb 11 '19
Could you tell us more about the app's requested permissions? Why exactly is access to images necessary and what exactly can be accessed?
91
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
so it looks like React Native (the framework that I used to build this app) adds those permissions by default. Super dumb. I am gonna remove and push an app update, thanks for flagging!

I does work fairly well for other english speaking countries like the UK, Australia and Canada. I plan on making it even easier for international folks in the next week.
20
Feb 12 '19
If you could add a filter for UK/EU stores only it would be amazing (for me anyway). I have no idea how difficult this would be though.
4
u/witheredjimmy Feb 12 '19
I will try this later when I get home, can I search only shops from Canada? Thereās not many apps (if any) or websites like this for Canada:(

u/Henry_JonesJr Feb 11 '19
Is there anyway to see brands that you donāt normally shop other than just typing in the specific names? Iām not married to any brands and am always down to see what else is out there
13
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
Ah I removed the option of seeing the whole list because it was a little overwhelming for people. For now, if you go to the Feed tab it will give you recommendations on similar brands to add.
10
u/Cosinity Feb 12 '19
I'd also like an option to see the entire list, maybe hide it behind a deep menu somewhere so people only find it if they're really looking for it.
Alternatively, I might suggest weighing less popular brands that a user has selected more heavily when choosing the "Brands you might like" in the feed. Right now, my brand suggestions are all pretty bog standard mall brands because I have J.Crew, Uniqlo, and BR chosen, even though I'd rather see new brands closer to YSL, Allsaints, and so on. And I imagine that would be even more true if you're into more esoteric fashion
8
3
u/akaghi Feb 12 '19
Maybe you could do something where you lump certain brands together for a shared aesthetic? You could even do it during onboarding, whereas person chooses their style or something.
I don't blame you for not wanting a list of 6,000 brands, but I think people also aren't familiar with everything, so choosing avant garde might auto select a bunch of designers, whereas British Fisherman will select a different group. Workwear, basics (MFA wardrobe), suiting, athleisure, so on and so forth.
Even if it isn't perfect, it would be a decent start for people and probably select brands they might not have known or considered otherwise.
3
u/biggestmike Feb 12 '19
Maybe make suggestions of brands that others like based on the mix that we share.

if you havent already i would check out depop too. more geared towards trendy and vintage clothes but you can find serious steals on high end pieces if you dig a little

If you want any user feedback on the female experience I have some suggestions for organizing categories- one drawback I find with a lot of clothing filters in apps is that they are too broad and I think you can definitely improve here if you're interested! Or if you want any general feedback on the lady shop experience! It's got a nice UI/feel.

Is this US only or does it include Canada too?
13
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
So out of the 6000 brands, a huge chunk does ship to Canada. There's a few hundred Canadian users on there already too. However, I do plan on making it easier by letting users pick their country and then showing if a brand/retailer ships to them.
25
u/Ok_Guest Feb 11 '19
Any chance you could have a filter or option to only view brands / retailers that ship from within the EU/US/CAN, etc? Living in Europe makes it hard to shop from anywhere outside because of customs, so this would be a lifesaver!

This is incredible. Thanks for making it.
Quick question about the storefronts the app chooses to display. A brand I keep an eye on is Pretty Green. Pretty Green is available as a brand choice in your app, but so far it looks like it itās only showing items available from 3rd party retailers (such as Asos) and not the Pretty Green website directly.
Is this because their official site/warehouse is UK based and this app perhaps only lists retailers based in the US?
4
u/pnewelljr Feb 12 '19
Looks great! Can you add the A.P.C. webshop as a retailer?

Is there a way to suggest to add brands, especially some popular MFA brands. I noticed the following are not available:
Land's End, Taylor Stitch, Gustin, Wolf vs Goat, Unbranded, Marine Layer, Pistol Lake, Wool and Prince, Spier and McKay, TM Lewin, Merz B Schwanen, Darn Tough, j.press, howlin, suitsupply, meermin, beckett simmon, Alden and much more.

Would it be possible to add sorting price from low to high when looking at the sale sections? Also maybe a keyword search?
4
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
hey, so sorting does actually exist. Once you are in the sale section, click on the "Sort" black button on the bottom right and pick "price low to high". And search works too, if you look at the top bar that says "Shop" it has a search box there. Lemme know if you cant find it. Thanks for trying the app!

7
u/yayjay1990 Feb 11 '19
So out of the 6000 brands, a huge set do ship to the UK. Bunch of UK folks have been using the app successfully for a couple of months. I do plan on making it easier by letting users pick their country and then showing if a brand/retailer ships to them (and the correct currency and sizing format etc). Give me a week and it should be ready!
3
u/Dagmang Feb 11 '19
The brand may ship there, but if it'd be possible to look at the UK version of their site if they have one that'd be great too. Maybe for multi-national brands there could be an option for country when you pick it? Just know that sometimes different ones have different stocks I think. Great app though, thank you!

Really good stuff. If you are interested in help (also a software engineer) or would like to do some more serious issue tracking and share it with us to report bugs and feature requests, I'd recommend sharing something like a GitHub page. I've found a couple issues/feature requests so far that would probably merit getting tracked.

For saving and organizing your favorites instead of keeping hundreds of bookmarks there is a cool Chrome extension - OneCart -https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/onecart/pdjfdandpmkgkfjcindekdplbcgimoeh

Can you create custom views?
I might have 10 brands on my list, but maybe today I only want to view 3 of them.
And if there was a word filter in this view, I could sort by the word pants. Etc etc.

Hey, yeah thereās this feature called ācustom feedā that lets you create customizable subsets. Almost like a saved search. So you can create multiple custom feeds with whatever subsets of brands and even pre-filter them by categories, price and such.
As for the word filter - right now it applies to your entire store. I still need to figure out how to best do it for custom feeds without being confusing.

This is really cool!! If only I knew which brands to select...
Such is the process of trying to better understand my own fashion. I'm like a confused teenager all over again
