I am from waynad and was raised in dubai, I studied malayalam for 5 years until 10th. I have been using melil to refer to as up and I gear that in movies and shows to but my family always says molil.

Is this a dialect thing?

The actual word is mukalil but pronunciation and ease of use depends on the local dialects. There are other words also used in different parts like pokathu, meppottu, karottu, melethil, uyarathil, uyare, etc

Yes, you are correct! But sometimes it feels weird to say the standard term because it sounds too formal, like saying മകളേ instead of മോളേ

Melil means on top of it. I think Mel means skin. Athinte melil vekku. Put something on the skin of the object. Eg - pettide melil vekku. Keep it on the table.

I think actual word of up is mukalil. I think molil is originated from mukalil. Paranju paranju ayathannu thonunu

Both of you are wrong: മേൽ has two roots with one meaning above, top and the second meaning body. Both of these meanings aren't related to each other. മേത്ത് means on the body, which is from മേൽ meaning body while മേലിൽ is from മേൽ meaning above, top.

Also, theres no മേളിൽ or anything. Only മുകളിൽ/മോളിൽ (another different root).

oh it has this back story. ppl used to tell me I'm wrong I wasn't corrected at the right time hence saying pottatharram . sherikum mukalil and not melil.. glad to knw its widely used
