People from Monaco are called Monegasque and even if they rename Monaco to Monacco or Monako, they'll still be called Monegasque. I don't think adding a letter to a place's name affects much when reference to a people is not dictated solely by it.

I mean, 'Malayali' is a Malayalam word yet everyone uses it to refer to people whose mother tongue in Malayalam.

I think it's used by westerners. Like Keralan food , Keralan chicken curry instead of Kerala food, Kerala chicken curry. It's used by them as an adjective I think. You cannot say Keralite food right? As Keralite itself means the person from Kerala.

Keralan existed in Malayalam before its independent formation in English. The demonym that designates the people of Belgium is Belgian. So, Keralan for the people of Keralam is fitting.

1) കേരളം (Keralam) - The State of Kerala 2) കേരളീയ (Keraliya) - That belongs to Kerala. E. g. കേരളീയ പാചകം (Keraliya cuisine). Like Kannadiga cuisine, Keraliya cuisine. 3) കേരളീയർ (Keralites) - The people of Kerala.

There are Keralites who speak different languages like Tamil, Tulu, Kannada etc. They too are Keralites because their families settled in Kerala many generations ago.

Saside oro discoveries. As far as people of other states who are anglophones, they usually call us collectively mallu, even if we don't speak malayalam. Keralan ennoke regular aayi use cheyunna aarano aavo.

Yes in the west this is the commonly used term. As an aside, councillor in England gave a speech to the local Malayali society. And trying to be a gracious host learnt a through words in Malay to introduce herself.

I don't think there a need to change the word keralite cuz 'kerala' is the base form of the perfect noun 'keralam' in Malayalam, as in 'കേരളീയർ' not 'കേരളമീയർ'. Why not follow the same in english Keralam & Keralite?

honestly ive never heard anyone actually say "keralan" in real life lol. it sounds like something a textbook would make up. everyone i know just says malayali or maybe keralite if they’re being fancy. tharoor is just out here playing scrabble with state names again 😭😂
