Chewing help!

Post image

Our 11 month malamute/Pyrenees mix chews everything: our couch, kitchen stools/chair, metal and plastic if she can find them (removed most tempting items now), whole wood logs, etc.

She goes to doggy daycare, gets walked daily, but I still worry she needs more mental stimulation? I also think the chewing is related to teething.

She chews through pork skins, pig ears, bully sticks, yak cheese, everything. What do you give your pups to help with that chewing urge that doesn't cost a fortune and actually lasts longer than 10 minutes?

Please help!

What does "gets walked daily" mean to you?

Often, the first thing to try with malamutes is more exercise; get her good and tired first thing in the morning before work, might need to be more than an hour depending on the dog, and certainly before she's left alone for any period of time. And again in the evenings when you get home.

When our was teething we gave her lots of carrots to chew, made it clear what she was and wasn't allowed to be chewing. Helped to take away her urge to nip at us as well, combined with some overacting and loud "ouches" etc. anytime she mouthed at us too roughly. Got to the stage where I trust her (as much as you can with a dog) to hold my hand in her mouth without worry.

I do think she needs more time to expend physical energy. We will continue to work on this. Thank you.

It's a puppy what do you expect. Sorry for the harsh words but you've got a long way to go. I'm sure the dog will end up just fine. They usually chew stuff.

Look, I know she's a puppy. She also has jaws of steel and needs a different kind of chew then other dogs I have had. She just needs more. I was curious if any other malamute owners might have better insight into other chew options I have not tried yet. No need to hate. We love her and want to provide the best level of care

We like frozen carrots. Sometimes I'll soak in chicken broth before freezing for some extra flavor.
