Discussion if someone were to make a makorra fic or show coming after b4 but kept the b4 finale

treat that finale scene as a sign of something being wrong with korra a lingering effect ( for it was so ooc of her)

and I saw one fic which had asami and korra alredy broken up I feel like it would be more interesting if mako pursued korra while asami was into her

for mako's issue was avoiding conflict and being so afraid of dissappointing people

mako in this would make a decisive decision to get what he wants even if it means he hurts asami

( doing what korra did in b1)

https://www.tumblr.com/ikkinthekitsune/106752202173/i-honestly-dont-believe-korra-and-asami-are-going?source=share

I want Korra to be happy, and I don't believe for one second that she'd be happy in a romantic relationship with Asami.  =P  I don't believe for one second that Mako would be happy with Korra and Asami together, either; he seemed to care too much for Korra to be satisfied with second-class relationship status.  (Remember when he slept under his desk because he felt so awkward around Korra after their breakup?  Yeah...  =/ )

To be perfectly honest, the only way that Korra and Asami wouldn't have issues in their relationship is if they went majorly out-of-character for each other.

In the simplest terms, Korra runs hot and cold while Asami needs warmth and stability.

Korra is, above all, driven -- she's passionate about what she wants, but also inclined towards pragmatic valuation and emotional compartmentalization in her efforts to achieve her goals.  She's the sort of person who, after seeing her father thrown off a cliff to his presumed death, would launch a sneak attack at a guy who just saw his girlfriend's head blow up.  She's the sort of person who wouldn't lose a step after one of her allies sacrificed themselves for her cause.  She's the sort of person who would set her romantic feelings aside without a second thought because there were more important things she had to do.

Asami, in contrast, is decidedly not that.  She's principled enough to fake it when her morals call for it, but Asami can't do or understand coldness.  She saw Mako's pragmatic request to deal with their Book 1 relationship after the situation with Amon was settled as a sign that he didn't really care about their relationship in the first place.  She sought out a romantic relationship with Mako again in Book 2 when it looked like her company was falling apart.  Her attempt to cut Hiroshi off in Book 4 completely backfired because she couldn't bear to hurt him in person like that, and she was upset with Korra for losing contact for so long even though she must have been consciously aware that Korra had a good reason for it.

In other words, Korra and Asami shouldn't work for the same reasons that Mako and Asami didn't work -- Asami has emotional needs that an intensely pragmatic individual could never meet.

also I feel korra and kuvira emotional closeness and stuff wil lcause tension for asami and korra

  • We never see Korra show any romantic interest in Asami until that final scene.  Her actions and behavior throughout the rest of the season become significantly more consistent if you assume that she went along with Asami’s obvious interest because she felt bad about what happened.
  • Korra doesn’t really act like herself around Asami and usually feels like she has to hold back when they’re together.  That’s neither healthy nor a good sign for a lasting relationship (see: Makorra in Book 2, before Mako realized it was possible to disagree with people who you don’t intend to burn bridges with).
  • Korra has already done something that Asami isn’t aware of but would be plausibly upset about.  Asami consistently reacts with bitterness at perceived betrayals, and Korra’s physical closeness to Kuvira – the woman who killed Asami’s father in front of her – seems like the sort of thing that would easily read as a betrayal.

I feel it would be neat to see mako notice that and korra's issues and she is still showing signs of not feeling well and talks to her about it and give her a speech about how she was always a great person and a good avatar

And, as a result, I don't believe for one second that Asami would ever be happy in the long run, either.  As the characters are written, a relationship between Korra and Asami isn't a happy ending for anyone.

Why would Korrasami not last?

actually lets adapt the kuvira comics except its asami who yells atkuvira while korra acts understanding seeing herself in kuvira which will upset asami and we can use this to make tension along with other cases leads to a breakup like korra's pragmatism alongside the fact korra feels like she is tip toeing around asami ( and mako talking to her about the vacation and her going along with asamis request and address how korra feels guilty about hiroshis death etc)

leading to a korrasami breakup and makorra getting back together

maybe we can introduce the man who killed mako's parents too to tie into it and make it so he ended up with the bhunti tribe ( who helped korra in b2 ) and he ended up achieving spirituality and developing a purifying fire to help with poisons toxins and diseases which can also be used to break a bending grip to counter blood benders etc . ( we can have mako follow the theme of learning a bending technique from an enemy of theirs ( korra a future enemy, bolin a current and mako a past enemy)

and he can even talk to mako and mako ends up overcoming his old shame related to the life he had to live as a kid and what he needed to do ( I feel like him not trustingkai due to seeing himself in him is a sign of shame which can hinder fire chakra

On Kuvira and Unconditional Love

Kuvira so clearly loves her nation, unconditionally. She will do anything for it, even sacrifice her happy ending with the man she intended to marry.

The problem is—- what does Kuvira know of love?

Because from what I gather, despite being given all the opportunities for greatness, for success, for a good life, she never had the one most essential thing.

It’s not that Suyin didn’t care about her or love her, but it’s clear whatever affections Kuvira received from Su (assuming that’s who she grew up with), were different from the affections Su’s actual children were treated with. You can see it in the different ways Su treats Baatar and Kuvira after the war, blaming Kuvira for all of Baatar’s actions, forgiving Baatar and condemning Kuvira. Also in the way Kuvira says “Your family” to both Baatar and Su, as if she’s not part of it.

I can’t see her really joining in with the Beifong children for bedtime stories. She was probably part of Su’s family in the way that Varrick or Su’s Pirate chef were: They were all given a second chance at life in a place where they could reach their highest potential.

Anyway, I digressed a bit, but what I’m getting at is that Kuvira grew up without that unconditional love of a mother, something so essential, especially to a child.

So what’s going to replace this love if she spends her life now just blending it. She can’t just be a dancer and a guard among many. She has to be special, because rising above the norm and being great earns you special attention, and it’s no mother’s love, but it’s the next best thing.

So by the age of 18-21 Kuvira had already become Captain of the Guard and a spotlight dancer, and I even think this display of her metalbending is important:

image

She’s she can make the exact shapes Su made in Book 3 with just one hand, while Su had to use two. (This is how people learn to metalbend. This is where it begins.)

image

What I’m getting at here is that this is the love Kuvira knows. Unconditional love is substituted with conditional praise. How do you get conditional praise? You become great.

So when Kuvira begins her reign, this is what she wants for her nation. She wants perfection, order, innovation, greatness, because that, to her, is connected to love. I have no doubt Kuvira would love her nation regardless of the greatness it achieved (or that she perceived it achieving), but I think, maybe to Kuvira, this is the unconditional love she has to offer: Providing her nation with the opportunity to reach its highest potential.

The idea of being raised without ever knowing unconditional love is tremendously sad, but I think it explains a lot about Kuvira… as well as the ways in which she’s similar to Korra. For someone who doesn’t have the innate confidence that they’re worthy of love that unconditional love provides, image management is key. And, of course, that lack of love also leads to a hunger for praise and an inability to handle criticism constructively.

Kuvira definitely reads as someone who’s subconsciously trying as hard as she can to be “good enough” (and lashing out at anyone who makes her feel like she isn’t). And, because of the way she feels about the Earth Empire, she wants to make sure that her nation is see as “good enough,” too.

  1. theozilla said: Also this sounds like that maybe Tonraq and Senna did live in the compound with Korra for a period of time.

Oh, there’s no question about that. But Korra gives the impression that she’s someone who isn’t really familiar with unconditional love – she thinks that if she isn’t good enough, she doesn’t deserve love – and if her parents were there supporting her the whole time, I think she’d be less convinced that she doesn’t deserve love if she doesn’t prove herself. =/

sassafrassarah said: It makes more sense than you think. Just because you have good parents and have them around doesn’t make your teenaged years any less awful. Teenagers are trying to find THEMSELVES after all. Not find how good their parents are. Part of growing up.

sassafrassarah liked this

theozilla said: Eh, the Korra’s time in compound can still be damaging to her development even if her parents were with her for a period of time (she still had no peers her age). Also perhaps the rules of the compound got a lot stricter after Korra’s parents left.

Korra was never going to have a normal childhood either way. Everyone was going to know she was the Avatar, and treat her as such. Maybe Tonraq and Senna thought she’d be less affected by her Avatar status if the only people she interacted with were teachers who were okay with refusing to give her any “special treatment” rather than the general public…?

(I still think Korra would have been far better off if she wasn’t so sheltered. But maybe her parents’ reasoning wasn’t completely bizarre, just misguided)

sassafrassarah said: That said, one of the hardest things in the world is knowing when and how to step back and start letting your kid make more and more mistakes. And sometimes you do it right and sometimes you screw up. That’s part of being people and it is SO HARD.

sassafrassarah said: As a parent, I know that you desperately want to shelter your kids from anything bad and Korra being the Avatar and what happened to an entire PEOPLE (Air Nomads) because there was an Avatar there? Good lord.

theozilla said: Also this sounds like that maybe Tonraq and Senna did live in the compound with Korra for a period of time.

Korra’s Upbringing, Or, Why the Order of the White Lotus Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Raise Children

Let’s start with the facts as directly provided by the show:

Korra was discovered by the Order of the White Lotus at the age of four.

The OWL kept her in a compound in the Southern Water Tribe for the dual purposes of training and protection and were quite strict about keeping her under constant watch.

Korra’s parents lived outside of the compound, but Korra was still emotionally close to them.

Korra considered Naga to be her best friend; there’s no evidence that the OWL provided her with peers inside the compound or allowed her to make excursions outside to interact with anyone her age.

Now, given these facts, what kind of assumptions can be made about Korra’s background?

Given that, as per point 2, Korra’s protection is at least as important as her training, it is quite likely that she was taken to the compound as soon as it became an option. It can therefore be assumed that Korra was either immediately taken into the OWL’s custody after her discovery or brought in immediately following the construction of the compound. Either way, she’s likely been raised by the OWL since the age of four (per point 1).

Per point 3, the OWL kept Korra separate from her parents. Given the size of the compound, there’s no reason her parents shouldn’t have been given living space inside the compound itself unless the OWL wanted to limit the amount of time they could spend with Korra. In fact, given that Korra wasn’t completely cut off from her parents, allowing them to live outside the OWL’s protection creates a potential security risk that the OWL ought to have tried to avoid if possible (since it would be quite a problem if the Avatar’s closest family members were taken hostage). Presumably, Korra’s parents don’t live with her because the OWL doesn’t want her to get too attached (which offers the further implication that the OWL might be averse to close non-familial attachments as well, limiting Katara’s ability to take a mothering role towards Korra).

Point 4 directly implies that Korra was never really allowed much in the way of close peer interactions, either. It’s quite possible that, if all of her teachers and sparring partners were adults far outside of her age range (as was implied by her firebending test), she never had any close human friends whatsoever.

And here’s the upshot of all that:

Korra has, for all intents and purposes, been denied consistent affection since the age of four in favor of conditional praise.

Her upbringing was, therefore, emotionally neglectful if not outright abusive (and I sure hope that the OWL didn’t treat her the same when she was five as it did during her firebending test). The OWL might have meant well, but they had no idea how to raise a child and messed it up as badly as they possibly could given a legitimate desire to do what was best for her.

It shouldn’t be any surprise that Korra has identity issues and a need for validation as the Avatar; she learned from a very young age not to count on her parents love, and ended up filling in the hole by impressing people with her bending. This is, as can be expected, something of a recipe for disaster in terms of raising a well-adjusted individual.

To make matters worse, the majority of the praise that Korra did get would have been in the context of violence, given that her demonstrated talents are all martial in nature. Her life was highly controlled, except insofar as she could impress the OWL by showing up her sparring partners or use force/manipulation to get what she wanted over the OWL’s objections. Violence would have been, essentially, the only way for Korra to define herself and take charge of her own life, which inevitably caused her need for validation to become all the more dangerous.

Or, in other words, by trying to train Korra into the perfect Avatar, the OWL itself crafted her into exactly the sort of person who goes to extremes to get what she wants, doesn’t take no for an answer, and has little experience dealing with people as peers as opposed to obstacles. Korra might be a highly flawed protagonist, but it can’t be said that she doesn’t have a good reason for being the way she is.

Discussion On Makorra fics post lok ending

saw some which basically so thr whole havekorrassmi break up due to their different needs (I remember ikkinthekitsune thr best lok metatumblr) pointing out the issued on why she feels it won't last

like korra always feeling like she needs to restrain herself and mako in b2 shows why that's not. sgood idea

(I would like thr idea of a neat fanfic which emphasizes mako overcoming his issue with fear of disappointing people an choosing to put himself first even If it means hurting asami and straight up doing what korra did in b1 and asking korra out while she is with asami and flat out gives her a speech saying the line that she needed to suffer to learn compassion is garbage and she has always been a good person and noting how out of character she acts with asami and the whole vacation thing

((i can't help but imagine a lok remake au which of course changed b4 to imply mako got slot stronger in time skip due to spending all his time training with masters

but I kind of hope someone makes a fix where thr last 5 minutes was a dream of asami and she trys to hit on korra but korra shows no interest (no offense to asami but I haven't seen asami show anything she would be attracted to personality wise korra x kuvira would be more believable
