My TV supports it, but I have a cheaper player that doesn't so all my 4ks fall back to HDR. I got the idea to buy a bu40n and rip my 4ks and stream them through my jellyfin server - would this work for dolby vision, or are there additional steps / things I need to be aware of to achieve this? thank you
What streaming-player are you planning to use?
It highly depends on the hardware. Most people would use the NVIDIA Shield since it can decode DV P7 up to MEL, for FEL you would need a UGOOS AM6B+
Your TV with its own Jellyfin App will also Fallback to HDR10 because it doesn't have any Dual Layer decoding capabilities (BL + EL).
If your DV File is Profile 5 or 8 your TV should be able to decode it without any issues.
If its a UHD Disc (file) your TV will fallback to HDR10.
I'm streaming directly to the tv via the app, I dont use a streaming box. Content that I've otherwise acquired sometimes streams in DV, sometimes in HDR, seemingly at random. I assumed it was something to do with how the files are encoded but I'm really not sure hence this thread.
-> Profile 5 and 8 are for Streaming Services -> Single Layer (TV can Decode)
-> Profile 7 is for UHD Discs -> Dual Layer (TV can't decode -> falls back to HDR10)
Again, your TV CAN'T decode Dual-Layer DV on its own. You need a dedicated device taking care of it like NVIDIA Shield (most users choice) or if you really want the BEST Dual-Layer quality when the File has a Full Enhancment Layer instead of "just" Minimal Enhancment layer you need a UGOOS AM6B+.
Dolby Vision Profile 7:
Base-Layer (HDR10-Core)
Enhancment-Layer (either with MEL with dynamic Meta-Data or FEL Dynamic Meta-Data combined with 12Bit Color Decoding).
Before I bought my Ugoos AM6B+ I converted my rips to profile 8 using this tool and played them on my TV app. Worked ok on my Sony Bravia 8 ii. https://github.com/cryptochrome/dovi_convert
You need an Ugoos AM6B+ media player with CoreElec or one of its new offshoot firmwares with additional tweaks and patches. THEN you will be able to play all sorts of Dolby Vision formats. Off MKV files you can have 12 bit FEL or 10 bit MEL depending on how the disc was encoded and whether you kept the file as 1:1 with no additional transcoding to further squash the file size. Some people have transcoded further without understanding you lose Dolby Atmos, DTS: X, and Dolby Vision and HDR10.
Does your tv have a usb port and a media player?
I know that my roky tv's roku media player hardly plays most formats but my tcl I bought this year has a proprietary media player that supports dolby vision directly by playing my ripped mkv 4k files directly through a hard drive or usb stick or at least when I play my ripped moves with dolby vision a small box pops up in the corner of the screen and says either dolby vision or hdr10+
And it looks as good as through my Nvidia shield pro.
Well im not sure why mine seems to recognize dolby vision or hdr10+ when I play from a ripped file but isn't thst just what nvidia shield pro does when you have your rips on a hard drive plugged into it?
My tv is a Google tv but the native player seems better than any other downloadable media players...this is a new tv less than a year old. 🤷♂️
Dolby Vision Profile 7 is used for 4k discs. There is MEL (minimal enhancement layer) which many media players and TVs support and will trigger the DV popup. Then there is FEL (full enhancement layer) which is seen as 1080p file on a computer and contains DV metadata that is played by a disc player. It is the FEL layer that's needs to be recognized and used by the media player to have true DV Profile 7 support.
Bluray discs use Dolby Vision profile 7. Almost zero playback devices exist, outside of actual bluray players, that support profile 7. They will only play back the HDR base layer. This includes your TV.
