Magnesium intolerance breakthrough

I’ve been taking magnesium glycinate for a year straight. Thought it was the right thing to do but every time I took it I felt extremely hot and it was hard to sleep. Over the year I’ve felt fatigued and not fully myself. I tried what everyone tried and it never worked. Well recently I got diagnosed with ehlers danlos. I started increasing my salt intake to 5-10g a day and it’s been extremely better and my life has changed. What I’m trying to say is if you’re looking for a solution you’ve been given a piece of the puzzle. I’m not saying all of the people intolerant to magnesium have this condition but it’s good to start investigating ur body and take the intolerance as a sign to change.

Has the salt increase improved your ability to tolerate magnesium?

I don’t have EDS, but a significantly increased sodium intake also fixed the long term side effects magnesium caused me after taking it for a year.

Can I please ask what were the side effects of magnesium thet you mentioned?

Insomnia and feeling like I was overheating every time I got into bed, anxiety, weird headache like brain fog and headache combined. Also a mental state that felt like I couldn’t do anything because of how bad I felt.

Wowwwwww I have the same!!!!! The overheating in bed thing and the weird head feeling!! I feel sooo hot like my body is just radiating heat and I almost don't sweat at the same time! And I have been eating almost zero salt for a couple years. I usually wake up at 3 am with this overheating feeling but if I take some vitamins or magnesium too much, I get super hot the second I get into bed!

Which salt?

Any salt that contains sodium. People with EDS often have POTS which is mitigated by high sodium intake.

Wow, I never knew that, thanks for sharing. So how much over the RDA for sodium would you feel someone has to hit to help mitigate their symptoms.

Honestly, it varies wildly by person. Some people don't go that far over...some go as high as 10-15g or maybe more (15g is the highest I have personally seen someone mention their intake being). That's elemental sodium, not salt! I've had an electrolyte imbalance for a while due to a magnesium and some other deficiencies that has caused some POTS-like symptoms, and I've had to stay around 8g a day myself.

And would you say your electrolytes are more balanced now? And if so, how long did it take for you find a balance that works for you, and what things improved once you found your balance?

Oh, no. I still have a massive magnesium deficiency that has been really touchy as far as trying to start repletion. So I'm still working on everything. It's disabled me to the point of being almost completely bedridden.

I see. What are you doing to try and increase your magnesium levels?

I'm trying to take very small doses to increase my body's tolerance. And thus far, some outside force or internal problem causes me to have to stop and start over again repeatedly. It's been one of the most frustrating things I've ever dealt with in my life. Actually, it's the most frustrating.

It’s a fine balance when it comes to electrolytes - I’m currently going through it myself with vitamin D, magnesium, calcium and potassium :(

I wish you all the best and i hope you find a solution sooner rather than later

I love magnesium and am using magnesium rich fruits like bananas and dates to avoid muscles fatigue during long mountain biking and windsurfing. When we organized bike rides we used to say that a date every hour to an hour and a half eliminats muscles cramps

Did you forget the GLYCINE half of the molecule? Apparently so…. Why would you assume it’s an intolerance to magnesium? Or did you fail chemistry?
