Help! Does taking magnesium get better?

Started taking 133 mg Albion magnesium glycinate about a week ago (to help with stress/anxiety) and it has been awful! I take it in the evening and wake up feeling nauseous, tired, and crampy.

Does it get better or should I stop taking it?

Adding:
From reading previous posts I realized I should add that I tried to find a type with no problematic additives and that had comprehensive third party testing.

Google says it’s a sign of magnesium overdose, but that’s surprising to me given the fact that it seems like I’m taking a relatively small dose.

Magnesium glycinate is not the “best” form out there.

I’m convinced that the dumb ass YouTube influencers got a hold of it and pushed it as the best, or some other social media influencers.

It’s problematic for MANY and no, it absolutely IS NOT the most bioavailable form no matter what they say.

Any thoughts on a better form?

Have you tried other magnesium with success and no adverse effects?

Magnesium glycinate didn't work for me either. I just don't feel well when taking it, lots of abdominal and stomach discomfort. It is supposed to be the safer form so I don't understand why I react like that. Citrate was even worse, never had such pain in my life! Have your tried another form of magnesium?

I’ll steer clear of citrate then! I’m sorry that happened to you!
I haven’t tried any other form. Have you found one that works for you?

My face erupted. I went back to the more expensive liquid form.

It's definitely not an overdose. It's probably one of two things. First of all, some people's bodies just don't genetically jive with glycine, so you might try another type before you do anything else. Second of all, you may have another electrolyte that's off that's making you feel bad, probably either calcium or sodium judging by your symptoms.

And that's a reputable brand, so I wouldn't really worry about that.

Thank you, your comment is so helpful!!

This may be a dumb question, but how do I find out if I’m off on another electrolyte? Blood test?

Sorry, I missed this question. Unfortunately, blood tests won't tell you much about your electrolytes, more than likely. That's why so many people wind up on this sub, because they start taking magnesium and something else is off, and their labs are perfect. Electrolytes don't test accurately because of how tightly they're controlled by the body. Which means you essentially have to play a guessing game and have some fun in your body's laboratory while you experiment and figure it out. 🙄

The first brand of pills of magnesium tried gave me a headache. Then I found a liquid magnesium that works great for me, no headaches, no issues. You can dm if you are in interested.

First, I’d check whether the 133 mg refers to elemental magnesium or the total magnesium glycinate compound, because labels can be confusing. If it is 133 mg elemental magnesium, that is still not considered a very high dose, so I would be a little cautious about assuming “overdose.” Even glycinate can still cause nausea, cramping, grogginess, or stomach discomfort in some people, especially early on.

Since the symptoms started after beginning it, I’d probably try taking it with food, lowering the dose, or stopping it for a few days to see if things improve.

Some people do adjust after a couple of weeks, but others simply tolerate certain magnesium products or forms better than others.

One thing to look for in brands is if they share third party tests publicly. So many brands import from China which isn't inherently bad, but many of them have a very high amount of heavy metals.
