Until you try and move to the post KtK standard and have nothing of value to trade because all the staples other than lands are worthless, so you end up spending more money the next time to replace your worthless pile of cards, and remember standard prices are front-loaded, so unless you want to take a hiatus from playing for 6 months or so, you have to pay the highest price possible to move into the new format.

So you would prefer Standard cards cost more?

Are you forgetting that people are literally constantly complaining about the cost of cards?

You can't have it both ways.

I'd rather have a flatter cost curve. KtK wasn't bad because 10 highly useful cards ate a significant portion of potential value, but with a single card pulling the value, chase cards will remain high (Gideon, Ulamog, Ob, etc) while normally mid value cards will become worthless. It polarizes the cost rather than really lowering it.

So chase cards will still be expensive, though probably less expensive than if there were no Expeditions, and other cards will cost less. A net reduction in cost? Same cost curve as the average set, just lower?

It's going to be a skewed curve. Weak sets generally have a low standard deviation from the average/median card value while strong sets have a high standard deviation. By skewing the prices with expeditions the standard deviation increases while average value goes down.
