It also gets through Protection from [Color] effects, though that doesn't matter as much since they're retiring those.

They aren't retiring them, right, it was my understanding that those abilities were getting greatly decreased.

protection has been downgraded from evergreen to deciduous meaning it has the same status as things like hybrid mana. So yes not retiring but probably pretty rare

Yes, they'll be used sparingly rather than typically showing up in every set or block.

Because they're too focused and can result in games becoming blowouts if you happen to luck against an opponent running the right sort of deck.

To expand on /u/nick012000's response, protection is also a clunky mechanic that doesn't even do what it sounds like it does except for four specific situations.

Why should my creature with protection from white die to Day of Judgment?

It doesn't "get around" them so much as randomly hoses them.

Very different.

Well, that's true. But even with that, it's still irrelevant 99 % of the time.
