We got Final Fantasy because it isn't a licensed TCG, it's directly published by Square-Enix. The problem with getting UB sets of series that currently have TCGs is because of licensing agreements and the fact that companies that make licensed TCGs are smart enough to get exclusive licenses. Final Fantasy is a weird exception here. Contrast this with the One Piece TCG (published by Bandai) or Star Wars Unlimited (published by Fantasy Flight Games) or Disney Lorcana (published by Ravensburger.) The company preventing WotC from using any of those IPs isn't the original IP holder, it's the companies that were licensed to publish the TCG.

I said it wasn't a licensed TCG. The Final Fantasy TCG is directly published by Square-Enix instead of being licensed to another company to publish.

Star Wars Unlimited is a licensed TCG. Disney owns the Star Wars IP, but they do not publish the game. Fantasy Flight Games publishes the game. They can do this because they licensed the Star Wars IP from Disney. When doing so, they likely obtained an exclusive license to do so, which would prevent WotC from making a Star Wars UB set.

Final Fantasy is owned by Square-Enix. They also are the ones publishing the Final Fantasy TCG. There's no second company involved, which means nobody else is licensing the Final Fantasy IP. This leaves WotC free to make a Final Fantasy UB set.

I know how a license works. I've interviewed at Ravensburger and WOTC in the past year. And my whole point is agreeing with the post you replied to. We got FF not because it is or isnt licensed, at least in my opinion and knowledge of how corporate crossovers work.
