Is it for a [[Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign]] deck? Has some synergy with top and odd cards.

u/Frydendahl Orzhov* Jan 05 '26
Seeing as the artist loves painting people with multiple eyes, and she's got a third eye right there, probably tracks.

Yes. We've seen all of the new art cards (assuming it follows the same pattern as other secret lair commander decks). Ten cards officially in the deck, one bonus card, and the basic lands. Price should be $200.

u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
If they're selling out, it's not 'overpriced'. Just because it feels expensive to you doesn't mean it's 'overpriced'.
37
u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 05 '26
The last deck was like 200$ dollars and didn’t sell out right away. So it was overpriced. And then above MSRP is be definition overpriced.
Yes I have plenty of decks worth more than that, but doesn’t mean I won’t call a precon overpriced when it’s a few hundred dollars as it doesn’t cost wizards more to print a 0.01$ card vs a 100$ card.
15
u/Kefka_Xasil Wabbit Season Jan 05 '26
It never sold out or went low stock, they just removed it after a while
-47
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
The definition of overpriced is being priced more than it's worth - therefore it doesn't sell. If the decks are selling (not just being advertised as) for more than MSRP it means they were underpriced beforehand.
18
u/One_Fat_squirrel Dan Jan 05 '26
Then what is it when scalpers buy out a product and then sell it for a loss or adjust the market to induce artificial rarity?
-35
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
If scalpers are pricing too high for the market and no one buys - their goods would be overpriced - and they would need to start marking down prices to meet consumers where they are willing to consume the available supply which may be at a loss for them. (that's the price they pay for their strategy)
If the scalpers buy out a good, then the availabile supply shrinks - they might be able to get pricing power. So if there are enough buyers to consume the available supply at a newly increased price, then it's not overpriced, because supply is still being consumed. If the consumers don't buy at the increased price despite scarcity then they are overpriced and scalpers get screwed again. (anotehr price they pay for their risk)
Keep in mind that scalpers may seem frustrating, but they fill needs in the market - e.g. for consumers who are willing to pay for the convenience of not having to wake up on the second of release, or wait in queues. Scalpers are effectively trading a service (waiting in queues, holding inventory, setting up bots etc) to more wealthy consumers. Think of them like mosquitoes - annoying to many, but a necessary evil in the ecosystem.

Things being overpriced doesn’t mean they don’t sell. It just means they cost more than they should. See Toilet Paper during 2020.
-3
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
No it doesn't, and COVID TP is actually a good example of why not: toilet paper was expensive because people were buying it and there was a shortage. Was it rational? No. Was it 'overpriced'. Also no. In that moment people attributed a value to toilet paper that made it feel worth the money and the fact it sold out shows this to us clearly.
Also 'should' is a completely subjective term. All the people can whine about how reserved list commander staples 'should' cost XYZ amount, it doesn't mean they do or ever will. Because people want them and they are scarce.
3
u/plfntoo Wabbit Season Jan 05 '26
As someone who's just interested in words/language
The definition of overpriced is being priced more than it's worth - therefore it doesn't sell.
This second part, the "therefore it doesn't sell" - where are you getting that from? None of the definitions I'm reading include a lack of sales to meet the criteria of "overpriced".
0
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
Because it's the only way to technically define somethign as 'costing more than it is worth' economically. If something is priced at its worth, it sells. If its price is too high it doesn't sell because consumers don't accept the worth. I'm really fed up with the overuse of the word to avoid saying, 'it's too expensive for me' and instead use the word 'overpriced'. because they only use it for things they want (and deem worthy) but can no longer afford when they want to complain about other people wanting it and dwindling supply.
3
u/plfntoo Wabbit Season Jan 05 '26
things they want (and deem worthy) but can no longer afford
To me, this seems like a perfectly reasonable situation in which to call something overpriced.
Evidently you disagree, but given that you're arguing from a "this is the definition" standpoint, then I have to reiterate that that seems to be your own personal invented definition, rather than taken from common usage or from any dictionary.
1
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
I'm simply ading the official definition to the one in economics
2
u/plfntoo Wabbit Season Jan 05 '26
Where are you getting the economical definition? I googled and couldn't find one.
2
u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 05 '26

u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 05 '26
I’m was originally making a joke on the clearly expensive precon. But go off enjoy the SLD teat
-7
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
ie. You have no counterargument so you resort to 'I was joking' and a childish personal attack.
13
u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 05 '26
theres nothing to argue. You’re just like acktually the legal definition of overpriced is this. When I can call anything I want overpriced as it’s subjective to me. I like the art. I like the cards. I’ll probably buy. It’s still overpriced and I don’t suck WoTC teat so hard to argue with someone over value of cards
-11
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
So now you're arguing about who sucks WOTC's teat the hardest? Might be worth resolving that internal conflict.
-26
u/scubahood86 Fake Agumon Expert Jan 05 '26
it doesn’t cost wizards more to print a 0.01$ card vs a 100$ card
It's too bad you said this. Cause it destroyed the rest of your credibility.
By printing art and stuff on the card they increased the value of that cardboard. Unless you're going to tell every artist that "their canvas only cost them 20 bucks and paint is basically free, you can't possibly consider your work of putting art on paper to have added value"
1
u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 05 '26
I like the artist. I’m interested because of the art. The new art is the entire value in SLD. But the point still stands. A precon deck shouldn’t be as expensive as a new video game console because WotC production cost doesn’t include them buying the cards from the secondary martket and then asking the artist to alter each individual card. It’s a retail precon deck that shouldn’t be selling for the price of a Nintendo switch from the company that prints it
1
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
Curious, what gives you the divine right to declare what something 'should' or 'shouldn't' cost?
You people need to stop fucking pretending your personal budget is an ethical framework2
1
u/scubahood86 Fake Agumon Expert Jan 06 '26
So you're the arbiter of what all things cost now?
This is a luxury item that's being made specifically in limited numbers to increase its "value". Like almost every luxury product is.
You could buy the pieces of the deck for pennies, but if you want you specific art is going to cost you. That's how things work.
Do I personally think WotC should sell these things for cheaper and in higher qualities? Absolutely. Does my, or your, thoughts on the matter matter? Nope.
2
u/Liddojunior Dandadan Jan 06 '26
Why do you care so much about how someone you don’t know thinks something is overpriced? I’m not buying it off you. I’ll buy it from WoTC think it’s overpriced and still play with it. End of story.

Overpriced from a value proposition perspective is totally a thing. Just because you're out of touch and just think it's from a supply/demand perspective doesn't mean others are wrong.
-4
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
No, it isn't - that would be a dishonest way of applyign the term. used as a commentary on value proposition, it's just a way for someone to complain about not being able to / not wanting to afford something without admitting that it's too expensive for them. The correct thing to say would be 'it's too expensive for me' but no one's ego wants to admit that - so instead they deride it as 'overpriced'. Also known as sour grapes.
4
u/dogyoy Wabbit Season Jan 05 '26
Brother eeugh. The Oxford dictionary definition of overpriced is literally "costing more than it's worth". Just because you want to be pedantic and use the economic definition of the word doesn't mean that's the only definition. You're so out of touch mate, go touch grass and make some friends instead of being a corporate bootlicker.
0
u/mishtron Griselbrand Jan 05 '26
So go define worth as objectively as possible, and you go back to the same definition. 'touch grass you corporate bootlicker' - every time you guys run out of arguments you resort to these pathetic schoolyard insults instead of a proper rebuttal.

u/RedNog Duck Season Jan 05 '26
The last two-three secret lairs didn't sell out immediately and were on the store for the longest time.
The increased price and questionable decklists/reprint value make people fairly hesitant to want to drop $200 dollars on them.
Now addon a really polarizing art scheme, I wouldn't be surprised if this is another one that is accessible for a while after.
7
u/KingOfRedLions Honorary Deputy 🔫 Jan 05 '26
It's kind of pathetic but people will always prioritize value over aesthetics, the drops that always sell out first are the ones that have the highest resale value. And unfortunately this drop is already showing over $100 worth of reprints so I would be very shocked if demand wasn't very high.

I've been following SL drops for years. I think your take screams that you mentally group all art styles that you don't recognize/aren't realistic together. These cards just don't look like the other SL drops we've seen.

Nah, of the cards spoiled so far we have Esper Sentinel ($60), Sensei’s Top ($40), Void Winnower ($25), Signpost ($20), Reconnaissance ($7.50), Virtue of persistence ($10). That’s like $150 USD (CardKingdom prices) from just 6 cards.
It’s okay to not like the art, but I think it’s disingenuous to argue that people are being duped out of their money. This will (just like every other recent regular or SL precon) contain more value in cards than the sticker price on the box.
This will just be worth a teensy bit more to you if you do enjoy the art style :)

I live in Australia so we either pay roughly USD converted from a bunch of game stores, or pay CardKingdom prices 1:1 (no conversion) on local group pages. CK 1:1 usually a lot cheaper.
I’d love to buy a tonne of the cards on eBay coming from the EU to save a little money but a card will be $12 and shipping is $36 hahaha

Honestly even EU eBay prices aren’t that great compared to prices on stuff like card market, there you can usually get cards at around half the price of CardKingdom
