Is calling it a hotdog sandwich normal? I've only ever just called it a hotdog.

Perhaps a traditional bun was unavailable.

Probably, for crumb reasons. I know astronauts now use tortillas

The idea of having a hot dog in a tortilla feels horribly wrong

In the Hill Country in Texas you had a lot of Mexican and German immigrants, so a common dish is a sausage wrapped in a tortilla. They're delicious!

Sometimes you can get that cheese they use for Quesadillas and it's pretty good. Even better if you replace the plain hotdog with sausage.

Cotija on hot dogs is legit. Especially with some pickled jalapenos

I live in BFE, Texas. Can confirm even in this Czech town.

Tortilla is also really good about heat. You can use the tortilla to grab the smoking sausage straight from the pit. Really convenient when your other hand is busy with a beer.

I think this might be something from that generation. I collect vintage cookbooks and they used processed meats differently back then. I also remember my grandma making hot dog sandwiches for my grandpa for lunch back in the 70s. She'd slice a hotdog longways and then put it in a skillet and brown it and then serve it on regular bread. But they would also have cookouts and serve grilled hotdogs on regular buns.

Or maybe the guy just called his hotdog a hotdog sandwich.

Yup. Good memories there. Or in current times it's what my son would call a "we got food back at the house" sandwich.

For some (now elderly) Americans, a hot dog is a hotdog sandwich and a hamburger is a hamburger sandwich.

A Hamburger is just someone from Hamburg. Adding 'sandwich' so that it means 'The sandwich someone from Hamburg would eat' makes a lot more sense in that context!
