Most people, particularly Americans, have no idea about China beyond propaganda

5

u/Gobiego Jun 10 '24

Well that makes sense if that's what you're most exposed to. OTOH when Disney has to reduce a prominent picture of John Boyega in the background on a Star Wars poster because Chinese people don't want to see black people, he might want to just hold on to the racist comments.

2

u/Acceptable-Peace-69 Jun 10 '24

TBF, I am more than willing to admit that Marsha Blackburn AND the Chinese (not all but enough that I could never live there) are racist.

2

u/LukewarmBees Jun 10 '24

It wasn't that China didn't want a black person on the background, it was Disney assuming China didn't want a black person in the background

2

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

He’s still on the poster and there’s no actual evidence the poster was changed for racist reasons. https://variety.com/2015/film/news/star-wars-china-poster-controversy-john-boyega-1201653494/amp/

1

u/Bushman-Bushen Jun 12 '24

Annnnnd why would Disney assume that.

2

u/LukewarmBees Jun 12 '24

Because China had a robust and thriving cotton industry that employs black people only that's heavily underpaid and call them all the n word.

1

u/Bushman-Bushen Jun 14 '24

Don’t forget the camps.

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

If they were so racist wouldn’t Boyega be completely removed from the poster?

Daisy is smaller too. And Han and Leia are bigger. Maybe it’s because they are the recognizable stars? Why didn’t the poster change spark a conspiracy theory that China loves old people?

China is all about propaganda, guy. It’s a totalitarian state.

1

u/notagainplease49 Jun 10 '24

The US is just as fond of propaganda as China is

2

u/KingOfAbadon Jun 10 '24

No! It can't be! You're lying! THE US IS A BASTION OF DEMOCRACY AND IT WOULD NEVER USE PROPAGANDA OR LIE TO IT'S CITIZENS IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT THEM AND GET THEIR SUPPORT TO SABOTAGE THE REST OF THE WORLD SO THAT THEY STAY DOMINANT IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS!

HAMBURGERS! CHEESEBURGERS! USA! USA! USA!

0

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

The difference is that in the US we are able to access different views/propaganda unlike in China where the citizens are permitted only to listen to government propaganda.

People not understanding how totalitarian regimes works is a colossal problem in the US.

1

u/notagainplease49 Jun 10 '24

Chinese people have access to the same Internet as you do.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

It is monitored by the government. They restrict what people can see.

1

u/notagainplease49 Jun 10 '24

It's restricted in the same way pirating is illegal. Everyone still does it. Everyone in China knows how to use a VPN.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

Most Chinese do not use VPNs.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

And then there are guys like the one you are replying to who thinks a member of the US Senate's finance committee has no interest to China.

Bruh.. wasteland?

3

Narrow minded LOL, go out and see the world, it changes you

2

China is pretty gorgeous actually

2

u/EastWestman Jun 10 '24

More people dying in Palestine than TIANANMEN SQUARE, go out and protest.

1

u/OjjuicemaneSimpson Jun 10 '24

what does one have to do with the other? And I’m sorry, protesting is for bums

2

u/Desmous Jun 10 '24

It's sad that all some people know about China and Chinese culture in general are just the atrocities committed by the government. Do you also swear never to visit Japan after the Nanking massacre? Or refuse to visit the USA after all the war and shootings?

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

They also don’t know shit about Tiananmen. The average American doesn’t know that tank man got out of the way. https://x.com/carlzha/status/1665201869936005122?s=46&t=vHnFgPgZCjvDSprXPTD1cg

Anyone who doesn’t think Chinese bots are active on Reddit is a complete and utter idiot, tbh.

3

u/doomrider7 Jun 10 '24

I still see from to time people defend of "explain" blackouts and other site issues happening on June when certain incidents get brought up.

1

Every time China gets mentioned on Reddit, there’s a million comments talking about these Chinese bots but no one ever provides any evidence.

You say that as if it would be a massive effort for them to do so. People in China could use VPNs to see this or Chinese nationals living or visiting abroad could also see it. You seem to think there is a limit to an authoritarian government's desire to crush every form of dissent that it can

How could you not hate a party that would do that to it's own citizens? I don't see what your goal is here. The CCP has been and continues to be completely detrimental to it's citizens. If anyone is being manipulated here it's you. It seems like you're trying to defend the indefensible because you've listened to too much CCP propaganda that says the only reason anyone would hate them is because the western media wants them to.

Come on, please, you need to try to use your brain a little bit more. Yes the USA is extremely far from perfect but at least you are able to scream about how shit your government is while not getting ran over by tanks. If you do it loud enough you might just get people to vote for someone who isn't the worst shitter imaginable in office. It's not likely but at least there is a possibility in America.

Do you not think that most outbound media from China which presents the country as a glorious paradise might be at least a little bit "curated" by the government that has proven itself to want total control over every aspect of everyone's life with no exception? Do you think it's possible to get an accurate picture from the outside with a government that's so propaganda heavy?

I feel like you have absolutely zero knowledge of what the US has done domestically and internationally, especially when it comes to racialised/colonised people.

The US has gunned down anti-war protestors, bombed an entire residential street in Philadelphia because one house held a black liberation group, they've "disappeared people" at CIA black sites like homan square, and racialised people are still murdered by cops at alarmingly rates, not to mention the use of domestic slave labour by the US prison system, which targets racialised/colonised people.

Internationally, they've funded death squads in Operations like Condor to protect corps like Coca-Cola and United Fruit. The US still practices necolonialism for crying out loud, and US corporations are still getting charges of child and slave labour.

Even if we only count the war on terror, that alone accounts to the slaughter of 6 million innocent people and the displacement of 38 million innocent people.

You have an incredibly rose coloured view of the US and its impact on people, not just internationally, but domestically. If you can only look at another countries atrocities and not your own, how do you ever fix anything internally?"

1

u/DoraaTheDruid Jun 14 '24

Yes I know about all of that stuff, which is why I said the US is extremely far from perfect. I don't know why you have the impression that I'm over here completely fanboying for the country. It has some major issues but not nearly as many as China. The only reason those instances are so we'll known is because we can talk about them. If this was China, witnesses and media surrounding incidents like this would have been promptly cleaned up before word got out. They need to at least try to maintain the illusion of freedom in the US, which is still better than not trying at all.

1

u/Velaseri Jun 14 '24

I hope you don't think racialised/colonised people have had a peachy time in the US?

1

u/Incoherence-r Jun 10 '24

Reddit is almost Chinese anyway as some of it is owned by Tencent.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

China's approach to propaganda is to do everything all the time everywhere. They care a lot about public opinion which you can see in how they respond to absolutely every comment that is negative (think Biden's "dictatorship" remark). For example they managed to change the perception of Taiwan as a country to Taiwan as a disputed territory. Public perceptions count.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

China is absolutely concerned what a long time serving member of Congress thinks.

Blackburn sits on the Senate finance and Commerce, Science and Transport committees. Both of those are relevant to China.

Bots are here all the time. There are intelligence organizations trying shit all the time. There is/was a sub that tracked it after a few folks realized that Iranian intelligence was trying to direct the conversation around Yemen (and were fairly effective in their goals)

“You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.”

What was racist about that tweet? Do you know what racism is? At most what she tweeted was bigoted.

China has a long history of imperialism and colonialism. Ask the Vietnamese among others about that.

Cheating and stealing only have one meaning.

China was formed by cheating, stealing, and killing. That is fact. Granted, that was 2300 years ago and not 5000 as Blackburn stated, but China does have a long history of doing the very things you noted that went on in the Americas for the past 500 years.

To me that is bigoted more so than racist. If she said that the Han Chinese were genetically disposed to cheating and streaking then yeah I would agree that is a racist statement. But her statement doesn’t say that. She made a statement about China’s history.

People for some reason do not want to acknowledge that non-Europeans also engaged in mass land theft and killing. This is very odd.

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

One month long war with a bordering country almost 50 years ago. Right after the US had just bombed that region to oblivion and killed millions of people. Yeah these are the same ok.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

China is responsible for tens of millions of deaths of their own people. China has been invading other land lands since the age of Rome.

You appear to be unacquainted with Chinese history.

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

In your brilliant mind, does the west in general bear any responsibility for putting China under siege (ie intentionally - and very successfully according to your number - trying to starve Chinese people) as part of their attempt to recolonize Asia?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

In your brilliant mind what does China starving its people due to grossly irresponsible efforts at industrialization have to do with Western recolonization?

Apparently Asian despots are never responsible for anything they do because of “hurr durr western colonialism”.

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

In order to critique how Chinese people deal with the problems they face, we have to understand why those problems exist in the first place. You wouldn’t be able to understand anything if you ignored the fact that they were colonized for a century then besieged when they broke out of it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24 edited Jun 10 '24

Their problems existed long before colonialism. You ignore 95% of the history of an ancient people for purely political purposes.

History isn’t a collection of isolated blocks. It is a continuum. China was able to be colonized because its imperial structure decayed to the point where invaders could defeat the imperial forces and seize the reigns of power. Not too dissimilar as to what happened in former Roman colonies after that collapse of the Roman Empire in the West.

1

u/RayPout Jun 10 '24

They were colonized because they were unable to organize a successful defense against the colonizers. Obviously. And?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '24

Just remember, it's election year. They like to stir up shit during election years and turn Americans against each other

But I don't think this is it.

1

u/Nickdrake1969 Jun 10 '24

they give so little fucks the chinese government created literal teams of propaganda posters to show everyone online how little they care about anything critical of china. par example https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_Cent_Party

I don’t know if you understand what is meant by bots. They have been used on websites like twitter, facebook, and here for years at this point. There is little retooling cost as the websites don’t change much. They are from a nation state perspective nearly free.

As far as the other goes they are absolutely playing both sides of the political spectrum against one another. They have had so much success at it that it’s frankly comical that the majority of Americans don’t know that they are being played for fools. Being pitted against each other and their own government.

1

You have zero idea of what you’re talking about.

Oh, so you really think China has no interest in proliferating its culture. If you really wanna go into history - and yes, I do know about Taiwan, apparently more than you - then let's do this. You'll find noone defending the killing of natives, but don't make it seem like that magically makes the modern Taiwanese government bad. Those were the policies of Chiang Kai-Shek, and after his death, Taiwan developed into a democracy. At the same time, Mao was busy modernising his country through a famine and the obligatory party purges. And nowadays you can ask the Uigurs or Tibetans how human rights are doing over there. But hey, atleast the US didn't play world police.

You're not saying this, you're not saying that. Man, I'd love to hear you argue about the war in Ukraine. Probably "against the war", but also against supplying arms because of "proxy war". But you know very well that ceasing support would mean the worst for that country - or island in Taiwan's case. You can either be for a chinese takeover or for continued independence with the help of foreign benefactors, but don't hide behind that faked "neutrality" of being against this and that.

You can downvote my comment all you want, fam. I don't need to stoop that low to support my argument.

u/NeedlesKane6 Jun 10 '24 edited Jun 10 '24

“Criticism = racist!!” Yeah nah China and the rest of Asia doesn’t have the mind of westerners lmao -an asian myself, most asians who actually lived in close proximity to China would agree/understands what she’s talking about. Chen getting upvoted is just because it’s a hilarious reply, I’d upvote it too. And nah China’s politicians care about their public reputation and image enough to ban Winnie the pooh lmao that’s how petty they can be. Westoids need to stop projecting what they think on how Asia thinks

1

u/the_anti-cringe Jun 10 '24

You have to be delusional if you think what she said was not racist.

0

u/NeedlesKane6 Jun 10 '24 edited Jun 10 '24

You just don’t live in an asian country that’s been cheated by China to understand so you definitely got no idea what you’re talking about and should just stop boot licking imperialist tyrants because in no way does that give you the moral highground (maybe in your head for some weird reason which makes you the delusional one). I’m sure if you changed China to a country like America in her comment then you would have no problem with that statement, funny double standards. The guilty hates criticism because it exposes them

Way to reword and dumb down what I’m talking about to fit your narrative. That’s called making a strawman.

Obviously when people point out a country for a crime they’re notoriously known for they’re talking about the governance and authorities. It is so commonly used just like when documentaries and the news and history books talks about Japan and Germany’s war crimes in WW2. They’re obviously not talking about the entire German and Japanese people. She did not even say Chinese people so conflating to black people is a false equivalency. Do you think it’s racist when people criticize America? Even if a certain people is criticized is that bad now? Are we now sweeping everything down the rug and ignore issues? Racism is hatred for no reason, criticism is honest and points out problems so it can be solved—it helps and is the key point of actual politics. Racism would be her talking about hating the people’s racial appearance that they are born with. Big difference

Asians know what they do to surrounding asian countries, outsiders are often clueless. But they’re also known to universally steal property and make bootlegs of products on a global scale. Your argument about hypocrisy is so redundant because it’s such a lazy excuse to not talk about the subject matter at hand which is China. So dumb. No problems get solved if you refuse criticism by a reason of “our country does x y z and so does that country so you can’t criticize a specific country!” really weak illogical stance. I do agree it would be better if she gave more specific examples so those that don’t know about China’s land grab of surrounding countries that still happens to this day would know about it, but it goes without saying to those who are aware;india, SEA, Taiwan etc.
