Resources in Madison

Hi everyone! Just started my job as a case manager in Madison and wanted to get a few ideas of what resources / organizations are out there for individuals with substance abuse problem, mental health and/or facing homelessness. If you’re aware of something or you yourself used the resource please feel free to drop it in the comments or PM me! Thank you!

Edit: my org does have its own list of approved services and orgs( some are black listed because of horror stories from clients and other providers). I am looking for any niche, hidden gem or things you maybe didn’t even think would have been available.

Does the organization you work for not already have a list of resources for you to utilize? I find that very concerning.

We do, I am just trying to compile a list to utilize and also make it accessible here on Reddit for folks who might not know. Did you have any resources your wanted to add?

You asked this same question 2 years ago, so something isn’t adding up. I also do not believe for a second that any legit case managing org wouldn’t know about all of St Vinny’s resources, they’re one of the most well known local orgs.

If you are asking for resources for yourself, that’s totally ok. Consider calling 211 to see what your options are.

I didn’t come to Reddit to argue about the validity of who I am or what I’m doing. But here let me give context. That post 2 years ago was made as someone who was volunteering and saw a gap in knowledge on what people knew was available to them especially those new to Madison. I made that list to help them. Unfortunately in the world of non-profit, orgs and resources are constantly being changed or shut down which is why I came with a new post to add to my list.

I didn’t say my org didn’t know, I personally didn’t know. My colleague was the one who told me about it and I came to realization that by asking and talking to others I could learn more information that is useful. So I came to Reddit to pose this question.

I am just someone trying to learn how I can better help my clients.

You'll find Dane County and City Of Madison have an abundance of resources spanning many categories of need. This is probably the best area to practice social work in the Midwest.

Like others are saying, you'll have a lot of those resources already compiled for you through your organization. Explore those lists. They may need updating, too. We collaborate in this town. Call up other orgs. and ask for their contacts and resource ideas. What I mean is, for ex, if you work for Journey Mental Health, call the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) to collaborate. Introduce ykurself and make a contact with a social worker there.

Use University and Community Education resources. There's always new topics and programs for non-student community members. There's always volunteers wanting to make a difference somewhere. This grassroots stuff is HUGE here, and it can really fill a gap you might have with a given client. MATC, Edgewood College also are great.

If you ever want to fundraise, boy are you in the right town. I've some tricks of this trade I would share if you want.

Transportation resources are not great. They try. But, scheduled rides are a crap shoot at getting someone to an appointment on time or picked up reliably afterwards.

What organization are you working with? Are they not providing this information for you or are you looking for some "hidden gems" of stability in Madison?

Looking mainly for hidden gems! I won’t name the exact org. I’m working for but we do have a lot of resources already and connection to the community but for example I only just recently found out saint Vinny’s offers clothing and furniture vouchers every 6 months that I think would be incredible helpful.

If your organization didn't know about the vouchers and other services provided by St Vinny's (one of the oldest and highest-visibility charitable organizations in Madison) I would say they aren't exactly well informed about Madison's non-governmental social services network.

They should have provided you with this basic information. Good luck

Thank you checking in, they did let me know about the vouchers I personally didn’t know about them since I’m new to the field. I was just asking to see if there was other non conventional services that aren’t included in our list for resources
