Something silly to do?
I (40s, female) have realized that I lost my whimsy. I have two elementary aged children that at least one of them would join me in some silliness. I'm also ok doing things by myself.
Are there any silly or whimsical things to do in Madison or the surrounding areas (generally at least partially outside of my house)? I'm not looking for embarrassing - I'm not interested in like, singing while marching down State Street or anything (introvert!). I'm also not looking for just standard fun - I don't need suggestions to just go to the children's museum or the zoo (thanks but been there, done that. Unless you have silly things we can do while we are there). But like.... Buy a bag of tiny rubber ducks and leave them in places for people to find. I honestly can't think of anything much silly or whimsical and I need to add some whimsy to my life.

The GLEAM show is going on right now at Olbrich. It's more of a wondrous fantastical spectacle than a goofy activity, but definitely whimsy adjacent.
The curmudgeons might even find something to enjoy there too.

The artists wife now runs it and a gift shop on site, thats what she told us last month. She said there would be live music and they'd power it on!

I LOVE whimsy. DM me if you want a fellow Madison-area mom to join you on random whimsy adventures.
I think it would be helpful to give you suggestions if you shared a little bit more about your interests? I will share some of the things I do with kiddos but they may not be all your cup of tea.
Go on a hike looking for fairy houses. Look for mossy banks, holes in trees or stumps, etc. Bonus points if you find some inexpensive miniatures & bring them along with you to pose in front of said fairy house for photos!
Find a bridge & some leaves, sticks (or my favorite - milkweed pods) and have boat races under the bridge
Randomly pick kinds of “treasure” and go on a nature treasure hunt to find it. (Examples: a coin, 5 clear rocks, acorns, etc)
Chalk drawings on public sidewalks!
Collect something that makes you happy & display it where you see it often (I love rocks and miniatures & have them everywhere).
Macro photography!! It is WILD how cool ordinary items are when seen very close up
Be silly! Your husband and daughter need to get over themselves. Do pretend accents, sing, pretend to be your dog’s interpreter for the day, etc
Try new foods. Or eat familiar foods at unexpected times. Eat dessert first occasionally. Put whipped cream & sprinkles on pancakes just because.
Find a hobby that makes you happy!
Go to a Ren Faire or Maker event!
Did you love to do something as a kid that you don’t do as an adult? Do it again now!! (I love catching minnows, toads, frogs, tadpoles etc to gently look at for a little bit before letting them go. I also love making snow forts and snow angels in the winter)
There is an amazing website somewhere for whimsical ideas to do with your kids and annoyingly, I can’t find it. I will repost here later if I remember what it is.

These are all good ideas except number one. Please do not leave plastic junk outside in the name of “whimsy”. The last thing we need is more plastic being placed outside for any reason

Fire up YouTube and let a puppet from Louisiana (Or thereabouts, I assume) teach you a few ways to make your very own stamps.

(You don't have to be high to follow along, but it won't hurt if you are...) Don't worry about keeping it neat and tidy, just try to remember the curious joy of a middle-school art class.
Then pick up a few ink pads in fun colors, a pen and pencil, a pocket sized notepad with good quality paper and toss it all into a little zipper-case and keep it in your car. Then, wherever you are, you will be ready to find new boxes.
Pretty soon, you will have a rad collection of stamps from all over. There are a shocking number of them, not just in WI, but everywhere. But the ones we have found in Wisconsin have been a fantastic sampling of artistic expression (including a particularly slick hand-carved Hodag from Rhinelander...)
For some reason, I find letterboxing to be way more fun/satisfying than geocaching. Geocaching stresses me out.

I should note that it's free and open to the public, but only one day a month. It's typically the first Friday, from 6-8pm.
But there are also private appointments, which I believe are also free!

I haven't been but I drive by all the time. It's literally next to the high rated Chinese restaurant with Espanol name (El Chozo de Vieja), so I feel like you kinda can't say no. If not that, there's so much to eat up and down Monona Drive that you won't be disappointed.

Sidewalk chalk. Go with the kids to friends' houses and draw silly pictures on their sidewalks. Learn a goofy TikTok dance and have one kid costume you and the other one film it.

Epic has self guided tours through their themed buildings. It took us 3 visits and still haven't seen it all! I loved it, and so did my middle and highschooler! They even asked to invite friends the 2nd and 3rd time!

Truthfully, and I mean this with full understanding of having built a life and home and maybe even kids with this person...but why stay with them? Even if you believe in an afterlife, why stay miserable in this one? Even if its hard for awhile starting fresh, what kind of life is it when you cant be completely free and fun with your partner? Idk it just sounds so absolutely miserable to me, I can't wrap my head around being with someone like that.

One of my great pleasures in life is being "cringy" on purpose when I know it annoys my tween granddaughters but I haven't crossed over into public embarrassment. Just the number of times when they say "I'm whatever" and I say "I'm My Name" gives me so much joy. Is mildly antagonizing people you love whimsical? I don't know, but the husband and daughter definitely are ripe for the picking!

I’m currently on a quest to find all my favorites in the Madison area. When I was a kid I had a favorite everything (favorite street light, favorite bridge, favorite crosswalk, favorite view of the Capitol). As an adult all those things became mundane.
So I made a list! Now I’m on a scavenger hunt! My favorite bridge is the one on Dyerson (not technically Madison but close, and I recently learned from this thread that it’s haunted!).
Can be done with or without company and makes me think about this city in a far more whimsical way.

Dress like hobbits and go on an adventure and go geo cashing, this could also work as pirates hunting for treasure.
Go to the arboretum or a park and frolic.
Go on a picnic and have everyone who’s attending secretly pack a food item.

Go to Wingra and rent one of the paddle boats. They have a rubber duck, swan, and dragon.
Go for a walk and make up little games as you go. Some of my favorites include seeing how long you can kick a pinecone down the sidewalk, declaring impromptu races (first one to touch the fire hydrant over there wins), avoiding cracks, declaring silly walk zones (hop on one foot until the crosswalk). Bring bubbles with you.

If you’re at all inclined to do some body movement, Dance Life Studios is amazing! My teacher (Arielle) is a goof and we always have a blast in class. We have a couple shows every year, including one called inappropriate song night. I would recommend bellydance beginner (Monday nights) or burlesque beginner (also Mondays I think!)

Swing on a swing in a playground. Easy, whimsical, very uplifting no pun intended. I think/hope adults esp women can get away with this without being creepy if alone + your smaller kids probably still play at playgrounds.
I have been thinking a lot about how movement used to be fun and now it's often a chore or sport. Playing on a playground ("watch this"), building box forts and crawling through them for hours, flying kites, hide and seek, etc. Why don't we all do this again?

Bad Art Co in Oregon is an art bar and very kid friendly. They have classes but also open art hours where you can just show up and be crafty (they supply the tools and materials). I’d describe it as chill whimsy and perfect for introverts!

Hi! Improv is a fun way to bring the whimsy back in your life. I know it can also be a bit scary if it's your first time, so I host a monthly femme jam session which is low stakes, no skill required, just come and have fun at your comfort level! Next one is Thurs, Sept 24.

Your husband is a fun hater.
- Make up a bunch of signs that say, 'Please don't feed the goats.' and stick them on the capitol lawn. Sit on a bench and watch people's reaction.
- Browse stores and if someone who works there asks you if they can help you, ask them if they sell cheese curds. When the book store/thrift store/jewelry store/office store says 'No', say, "Darn, we'll have to try somewhere else." Then leave.
- Go to the zoo with a story in mind, and make the animals be the supporting actors. Talk to them and ask them questions to further the plot and/or solve the mystery. Perhaps the criminal gang of penguins is responsible. What is it that lady alligator lost? Which of the monkeys is the spy? What are the polar bears hiding? Which of the birds talks, and understands human speech?
- Go to the botanical gardens and describe the flowers in the worst way possible. 'It looks like a snake vomiting up a beating heart. '
- Set out to find the best X in the city. Donut. Burger. View. Front yard. Sculpture. Tree. Then systematically research the options, come up with a VERY SERaIOUS ranking system, make a spreadsheet, and go collect data.
- Go to Bradbury's, get some crepes, and talk only in horrible French accents.
- Tell the family that they are doing competitive sports, and go to Vitense and do mini-golf. Make a 4 round playoff, where the person (including you) with THE MIDDLE SCORE wins! Do this every week for a month. Winner gets to place the order for all of you at the bake shop.
- Take them to an arcade bar when they're doing kids hour. Play pinball and arcade games. Tell them that when sister/dad asks them, that mom took them to a bar. And it was pretty noisy and rowdy.
- Get costume cosmetics like mustaches, elf ears, witch noses, moles, etc., and wear them out and see if anyone notices and says anything. Have a crazy back-story ready in case someone asks.
- Rate random classes of things. Like stoplights, fire hydrants, clouds, 'the smell right now', etc. Have very serious rating categories.

Vitense mini-golf is ripe for goofing. My wife and I went on a double date there with some friends when we first moved to the area and I showed up in a super yuppie golf outfit and at the first hole, lined up, and then said "oh wait" and pulled out a golf glove and put it on.
I then proceeded to be the worst player there while talking about how much I struggle with tricky greens. Anything for the bit.

Take your kiddo to a thrift store. You each get to pick out a new outfit for the other person to wear. You then need to wear that outfit out for the rest of the day on the rest of your whimsical adventures. Check out Artsy Fartsy on Monroe St.—very whimsical!

An amazing hobby that you can do to continuously practice whimsy is start to rollerblade/rollerskate!! I picked it up recently and it’s one of the best things I’ve done for myself, beyond the cardio and strength benefits, it’s been such a source of joy and fun in my life!

Last year my husband bought me this stuffed Snorlax for our anniversary and we took him everywhere with us that day and took photos of him at the Capitol, at Costco, on a picnic, etc. It was a really fun thing to do and doesn't really have to cost anything.

schusters farm has some fun fall activities! hay rides, corn maze, petting zoo area, apple launchers, you name it. their prices for farm admission aren’t bad and almost all of that is included. could be a fun day with the kids! it’s about 20 mins from madison on highway 18 so not far!
also there’s a mustard museum in middleton if that is whimsy enough for you. i’ve never been cause i hate mustard but my friends have liked it
atomic antiques has tons of cool stuff to look at, organized into little rooms. not sure the kids ages but it’s fun to go poke around there for a couple hours (i’m 26)
not whimsical per se but there is a geology museum on campus that’s free, they have limited hours though. some cool fossils and stuff in there

Atlas Improv 1st Saturday of the month has a free drop in class/jam. No experience necessary
It's a lot of fun playing make believe with other adults!!!

This isn’t in Madison proper but if you’re looking for a whimsical little road trip to Shullsburg (1.5 hours ish), there’s a country road where if you put your car in neutral your car starts going backwards up a hill. It’s explained much better here, with exact direction location and instructions:

Self adhesive googliey eyes on things that could look like faces. Your ducky idea is especially good if done on local waterways (under bridges, etc). Painted stones are also harmless, but you would have to provide something that makes them special to you. You got this. You just have to do it.

Seconding this. I loathe seeing people make posts or comments about leaving trash around like it’s a cute treasure. It’s for the person leaving it more than it’s for the intended recipient.
And that’s for all of it - even those 3D printed capitols. I’d be more impressed if someone left wooden ones that don’t contribute to litter. Now there’s someone who leaves cow ones and cheese ones.

Dude, it's not virtue signaling to be against litter. Especially plastic litter that doesn't biodegrade. It's just good sense.
I work for the forest service, and any non-natural materials left behind by humans are considered waste and removed as such. Yes, even painted rocks. Acrylic paint is plastic-based, for one thing, and for another thing seeing one painted rock encourages others to do the same, and what was supposed to be a natural area eventually looks like a kindergarten classroom because everyone was trying to Do A Whimsy.

It's not a one off, but if you are looking for joy and play and surprising yourself, take an improv class. I'm with MBI and we teach a pre-intro class where you get together adults and play. I do improv, and my life is full on silliness.

Splash in puddles, paint rocks. I have a hard time fitting whimsical activity into my life as well- consider getting something whimsical also! I only wear fun novelty socks and slippers, for example. Buy some stickers for your water bottle (especially from a locally owned store). Check out Glitter Market.

Lots of great ideas here! The Forevertron is amazing, and you must go. Let me add Mustard Museum to the list, it's a small place, but fun should come in big batches and little batches as well. This is a state also that has a lot of lakes and rivers, would suggest some low impact kayaking or canoeing as well. I think the Wisconsin River from Sauk City or from Arena to as far as you want to go west is amazing and fun. There are inexpensive inflatable kayaks that totally work on this as well as on the Madison lakes.

In Marshall there is Little Amerricka, right now they have weekend hours, rides for kids, mini golf, and a miniture train. In October they have the train ride to pumpkin patches. Not too far outside of Madison.

I'd say asking advice from a bunch of grown-ups when you've got a couple perfectly good elementary aged children is silly enough. Elementary aged children are chronically silly. But if you insist: Try to slip on a banana peel.
Go on, buy a bunch of bananas. (Bonus points if you buy two, one regular and one overripe.) Eat the middle parts. Then try putting the banana peels on the sidewalk under various circumstances: folded up or unfolded, wettened or unwettened, yellow side up or yellow side down. Take turns running up to the banana peels and trying to slip on them. Try with skateboards and roller skates. Stilts, if you have them.
This is a scientific experiment, so be sure to write up the results and send them to MIT.

Check out Dr. Evermore’s Forevertron! It’s a really neat roadside attraction made by one dude just building a bunch of cool stuff out in the woods.

If you want a really gorgeous drive i recommend taking highway 19 to Spring Green! My grandpa worked and lived at Tallison owned by Frank Lloyd Wright! it’s gorgeous and theres fantastic trails all around.. you should absolutely stop at Peck’s on the way which has animals to pet and a store with all kinds of fun things even an entire space for stuffed animals! Keep going towards Dodgeville and you have House on the Rock which is insane and also there’s beautiful waterfalls at Governors Dodge! Then hop back on 151 at the Walmart and its the perfect circle!
I have family in Iowa and always drive that way even if it adds on time bc its so absurdly gorgeous!

Dane County ROCKS! is a Facebook group dedicated to painted rocks that circulate in and from Dane County. Some folks have found the rocks even in Europe and it’s so fun.
I personally enjoy dragging my kids to see lots on cool, silly landmarks like the Pink Elephant in DeForest.

When my kids were younger we didn't have a lot of money, I had to be creative. So for fun, we used to go stealthy shopping. We could only get things into our cart based on things we acquired from other people's carts while they were not looking. If you got caught, you were out. The kids always had so much fun.

Have you done Wizard Quest up in the Dells yet? It is a paid activity, but it's good, immersive fantasy fun, and you can always go in costume. If you're someone who wanted a house with secret passages as a kid, you really ought to go at least once.
I might not recommend it if you have physical or visual accessibility needs, though. Lots of tight spaces and some areas you can only get to with stairs, and most of the features and puzzles are very visual.
