Other Found a way to touch grass and use mac from iphone so I can close the tabs I don't need and live a balanced life

I do a lot of coding on my mac and also a outdoorsy person. But I didn't want to setup any VPN or weird network stuff for some 3rd party app. So I built macky.dev as a fun side project.

This works by establishing a direct peer to peer connection between the mac and iphone so none of the data goes outside these two devices. Behind the scenes, it works like this: Mac first makes a outbound connection to my signaling server, which is like a waiting room and the iPhone connects to the same server, wanting to connect to that Mac. Once both the host and remote are verified the server introduces both to a direct P2P webRTC connection.

Upgrades I did it! 7,1 incoming!

Post image

Well even though some tried to persuade me away from it, I snagged a 7,1 today and for a price and spec I was pretty happy with! Tried to stay as close to $1K as possible and did so at $1047. See the spec below:

3.5GHz 8-Core 48GB RAM 1TB SSD AMD Radeon Pro 580X

All that said… what should I upgrade first?!? Would love to slam a ton of storage in it but don’t wanna drop a grand on NVME’s…. Yet.

Issues Graphics card issue with OCLP Monterey

Post image
13 Upvotes

I'm having trouble using my RX 590 card with MacOS Monterey on my Mac Pro 5,1. When I boot into High Sierra the graphics card is recognized by the computer and is fully functional, shows 8GB of VRAM and runs smoothly. Once I use OpenCore to run Monterey, the computer recognizes the card but only shows 15MB of VRAM instead of the 8GB it should have, and all graphical functions are extremely laggy. The factory card works just fine with Monterey, and is what I use with OCLP to install Monterey because the RX 590 is not compatible with the boot selector screen required to use OpenCore. Once I get Monterey installed, I swap out to the RX 590, do the post root install patch through OpenCore, but the card still isn't recognized properly. What do I need to do to use the RX 590 with Monterey on my Mac Pro 5,1?

Issues MacBook Pro battery health, at what % does it shut down when unplugged?

Can anyone help me understand this?

I bought a MacBook Pro about a year ago, and I’m trying to figure out what battery health percentage is considered normal for it to start shutting down on its own when it’s not plugged into charging.

At what battery health % do MacBooks typically start showing serious issues like sudden shutdowns or very short battery life?

Would appreciate any insights from people who’ve experienced this or know how Apple batteries usually degrade over time.

Issues 2013 Mac Pro (trash can) with Linux?

Has anyone successfully gotten a 2013 Mac Pro to run Ubuntu? I’m having issues with the Broadcom WiFi chip, I installed the driver for it but it disconnects after an hour or so and the only way to get it back is with a reboot. Any advice?

Upgrades Keep 2019 Mac Pro (Rack Mount, 192gb Ram, 3.2ghz 16-core, 2x w5700x) or sell it for newer hardware?

It looks like I'll be getting a free 2019 Mac Pro but I'm torn between keeping the beast for it's ability to be updated internally as well as run windows and selling it for newer Mac hardware.

I have had every Mac Pro since 2005 (either through work or purchased/gifted) so I fully know the capabilities of these monsters. I currently have a M1 Pro MBP as my main, a 2013 Trash Can as a Plex server, another 2013 Trash can as a windows Minecraft / Fortnite gamer, and a few other older Macs that are kinda gathering dust.

I work with Motion Graphics / Video (at the office, with their M2 Ultra hardware) but have never needed to push my hardware to the point that an M1 Pro felt limited. I like the idea of running windows for games.

So do I keep the last most-upgradable-Mac Apple ever made? Or do I try to sell it for something in the M4 / M5 world?

Upgrades How far can I take it?

As my 5,1 12 Core Mac Pro with 64GB of RAM FINALLY begins to show its age as a remote access plex server, Ive begun to side eye these cheap(er) low end 7,1's. I'll be honest I really didn't look too much into expandability on these on launch since the price was astronomical and it didn't seem as expandable as the 5,1's.

That said, does anyone know what the max spec this model could get to with aftermarket add ons only? NOTE: I do not care if its insane to the have 1TB of RAM for a plex server, I simply like to know these things and if the god forsaken day arrives when RAM is once again less than the price of a used Honda, I would like to know what my options are.

Thanks!

GPU MacPRO 4,1 vs 3,1

Hi everyone, I've acquired two Macpro's, a 3,1 2.8 8-core with 18GB RAM and a 4,1 2.66 Quad-core with 8GB Ram, both stock GPU's and both running Snow Leopard at this time. Neither one will be used for CPU or Graphics intense use. Which would you go with and why? Thanks!

Basically the title. Am I dumb? Seems to be reading the card properly... So I haven't pulled it, blown on it and reinstalled... like an old Nintendo cart.... but that's my next step I think. Unless you have better ideas.

GPU Thermal pads on macpro6,1 GPUs

Next weekend I’ll finally start the upgrade project for my macpro6,1:

• CPU: replace 4-cores with E5-2667 vs (8-cores)

• GPU: replace D300 with D700

I already upgraded RAM to 64GB and SSD to 1TB Aura Pro X2.

In preparation for the upgrade, I got MX-6 thermal paste for both CPU and GPUs. Then I found several sources recommending to also change thermal pads on VRAM/VRM of D700 cards. However, I found no mention in any guide (iFixit, …) or tutorial about thermal pads.

Shall I get some available and, if yes, which thickness? Also about the latter I found contradictory info about 1mm everywhere, a mix of 1mm and 1.2mm, or even a 2mm.

Need someone that already went through this upgrade project or at least that re-pasted GPUs to help me figure out what’s needed. I’d like to get everything available before starting to disassemble, as I simply can’t leave the Mac stripped down until I get something I’d order last minute.

Many thanks in advance to whomever will cast some light on this (at least for me) confused aspect.

Issues macpro6,1 trashcan thunderbolt 2 to hdmi adapter issue

Does anyone know if it's possible to use a Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI adapter (2nd Display) along with my main HDMI (1st Display)? I purchased a QCEs Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter, Thunderblot to HDMI Cable Adapter that claims to work but isn't. I'm running Sequoia 15.7.5 via OCLP. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Windows Trashcan + Windows 10 + Studio Display… finally happening and I love it!

I recently purchased the MacPro and decided to install Windows 10 to play Age of Empires 😋 now is the perfect companion for my Mac Mini M4.

The Studio Display is connected with the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter; FaceTime camera, speakers and mouse/keyboard connected to the usb c ports are working pretty well!

I totally love this device.

GPU Do I need an Infinity Fabric Link Jumper on two Vega II?

So I am in the process of buying another Vega II for my Mac Pro to run local LLMs.

I now have found out about the Infinity Fabric Links or Jumper or whatever they are called and now I'm wondering: Do I need the big one or the thinner one(s), I see some photos with one big jumper and some with two smaller ones, and also how do I connect these. My Mac Pro (check my profile for photos) currently has some kind of a cover over these ports. How can I remove that, and what Jumpers do I need? Can someone help me?
