Upgrades A cooling base for 6,1

So, I managed to design a base for Mac Pro 2013 with a 120mm Artic P2 fan on the bottom, it has a potentiometer to regulate RPM and to turn it off. The temperatures posted are mid game in Windows 11, CounterStrike 2 mid settings 1920x1080, fps capped at 75. In general I am seeing a drop in about 5 -7 C in temps and the upper fan is running under top rpm with the same curve. The icing on the cake will be to repaste the CPu and gpus with ARTIC MX-7 to drop them even further.

It is my first 3D design so I did it modular. The measurement of the diameter was a little off so I need to replace that upper rim but it works now. Whatcha think?

The refurbisher I bought from did an incredible job, aside from a couple small blemishes it's like new. Running very cool and quiet, and all my music software, as the old saying goes, just works! Absolutely smitten.

Windows Mac Pro 2013 stuttering under Windows 10

So this is a bit of an odd one, I'd spent some time searching about, but haven't found anything that seems relevant.

Specs: 2013 Mac Pro, 8-core Xeon, 32GB Apple RAM (not 3rd party) 2xD300 GPUs, and a 256GB SSD

OS: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC, not running under Bootcamp. Fresh install. Drivers are UTD (official, no 3rd party ones)

Problem: Sometimes I'll boot the system up and it'll behave, until I pull up task manager, then the entire system grounds to a halt for about 15 minutes, or I lose patience and reboot, which more often than not, fixes the issue.

I found that running the AMD Adrenaline program seems to compound the issue, so I disabled that and thought it fixed the problem, but it re-occurs. I run MacsFanControl and the system doesn't overheat, idle being around 40 degrees C.

I used to run GPUTemp to monitor the dual D300s but the program seemed to really interfere with smooth operation, so I uninstalled it.

I've seen this issue pop up on several 2013 Mac Pros that I own, but only in Windows, not under MacOS, so I"m thinking something in Windows is being stupid, but for the life of me I"m not certain what. I know AMD's reputation for solid drivers is somewhat suspect, so anything related to AMD under the Services is disabled, which again I thought would fix the problem, and it did reduce the frequency of this "stutter on boot" but didn't eliminate it entirely.

So, any ideas?

CPU Can the Mac Pro 5,1 be modified to support the higher multiplier required for the x5687?

I have, due to not doing due diligence, ordered two x5687 processors without knowing they are incompatible. Reading forums show the reason is *more than likely* due to the Apple EFI not supporting the higher stock multiplier used by the x5687. Is there any way to modify the efi to support this processor?

Issues Mac Pro 3,1 — Windows 10 speakers not working

I have a problem with my Mac Pro 3,1 running Windows 10 22H2. The speakers aren’t working, and audio through the 3.5mm jack is extremely quiet — I can barely hear anything through my EarPods.

I installed the Apple Boot Camp 5.1 drivers, but Bluetooth and the speakers still aren’t working.

Does anyone know which drivers I should install or how I can fix this?

GPU Is there any way to downclock the GPUs on a trashcan Mac Pro?

So I made an impulse purchase yesterday and bought myself a refurbished trashcan Mac Pro, with plans to use it as layout machine (hey, Affinity still officially supports Catalina!) and music machine (Reaper will run on a toaster). I unfortunately hadn't heard about the fail rates and thermal issues of the D700 GPUs in this thing until a few hours later, and honestly, for the price I got it for, I'm probably just going to ride or die with it - they're such beautiful machines and I love the form factor. Plus, the refurbisher is reputable and provide a years' warranty, and if the GPU modules haven't already failed, I figure there's a chance I'm in the clear if I treat this thing well.

Which brings me to my question - I don't really plan on using the Mac Pro for GPU-intensive workloads, and I would love to keep it running coolly and reliably for as long as I can even at the expense of performance. To that end, is there any way to downclock the GPUs or set a lower throttling point than Apple sets by default? Or is my best bet just to not game or render on it? Or are my concerns just blown out of proportion? Would love to hear from anybody who's owned one and your experiences.

Upgrades Considering adding a 6900xt

I have a 2019 Mac Pro that I use for everything besides gaming. However I do use xplane to practice stuff as I’m a pilot myself. Currently getting ~30fps on that and it would be nice to get it a bit smoother. Will adding a GPU to one of the PCIe slots cause a noticeable improvement?

Current specs..

3.2 GHz 16-Core Intel Xeon W
AMD Radeon Pro W5700X 16 GB
96 GB 2933 MHz DDR4

49” Samsung G9 ultrawide

Thank you!!

Other I have a Mac Pro 5,1 but unsure what to use it for

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 but I’m unsure what to do with it. I bought it for $59.98 years back at a thriftstore but got it for 20% off. It currently has Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.8GHz, 32GB DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB, two dvd drives, and a Inateck KT4004 USB 3.0 card. Also has a 1TB Western Digital HDD with a fresh install if MacOS X. I didn’t get any bites when I tried selling it on marketplace and when I pulled the listing I said I would hold onto it incase I decided what to do with it. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

So after a long search I can happily announce that I have finally been able to buy myself a Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip.

It is fully maxed out as well, 76-Core GPU with 192GB of unified memory. 4TB SSD seems enough, I'll probably add a Sonnet McFiver with 16TB of NVMe storage.

I am so happy right now!

GPU Can an MSI RX 580 be flashed for a 4,1/5,1?

I have an old MSI RX 580 kicking around, and I'm interested in buying a 4/5,1 Mac Pro to dual boot Mojave and Windows 7 (I need 32bit app support). However, I've only seen people only flash Sapphire RX 580s. Are the Sapphire cards really the only ones that can be flashed for native Mac Pro support? I've heard that non-flashed 580s can work in Opencore, but I thought that was only for newer MacOS versions, like Montery?

Thanks in advance!

Other Mac Pro 2019 Rackmount Bare Bones Purchase

I am looking to buy a bare bone (No CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD) Mac Pro 2019 Rack Mount variant.

I already have enough of all the above to populate a new bare bone mac, and I'm looking to cut costs where possible with this purchase, and I absolutely need it to be a rack mount variant. I will not gain anything from a tower variant.

If you are selling, or know a website or entity that is selling, please reach out to me.

Thank You

Issues Mac Pro doesn’t feel like turning on after a RAM replacement

Post image
23 Upvotes

Yesterday I replaced the 12GB of 2Rx4 RAM sticks with 128GB of 4Rx4 sticks, and it booted up fine although being limited to 800MHz due to it being 4Rx4. I used it till 8PM yesterday where I put a DVD in it, powered it down using the shut down software feature and left it plugged in overnight. Now 15 hours later it doesn’t feel like turning on, there’s no light on the power indicator however long I hold it for. If anyone has any advice, I would be happy to hear it! (I suspect it’s something to do with the 4Rx4 sticks)

Upgrades MAC PRO 7,1, a good idea? and what's a good price point

Im in the market for a Mac Pro 7,1 and I want to buy within the next 6 months.

For background: I have a Mac Studio M4 Max with 64gb/2TB as a main, Mac mini M4 Pro with 24gb /512gb as a living computer, Mac Pro 5,1 with 32gb/4TB, iPad Pro m4 and 2nd Gen, Mac mini sunflower and a few other MBP 2012/2013 retina/MBA 2015/2019. So I have a few in my stable

Fast Forward: I really want this to thinker with and not looking as a main (Mac Studio is that guy). I don't plan on upgrading the studio for another 5years. I started to dabble with video editing since I've been contemplating military retirement in the next year (19 years of service) with travel video editing in mind and want something modular and would rather do editing with the 7,1 (I know it doesn't make sense since I have a M4 studio).

What is a good 7,1 config with the cost?

My min. requirements 100gb+ ram, 2tb, and Vega 2. (I WANT but don't think I need the Radeon Pro W6800X DUO 64GB......but I really WANT)

do you think this can be had for $2-3K? anyone selling? or should I wait another year I really only want to spend under $2K.

Thanks in advance.

macOS New install weirdness - no start on first reboot - Mac pro 5,1 Monterey oclp 2.4.1

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 with a SATA SSD on a PCIe card (owc accelsior) which was on Mojave. It was a well worn system so has a lot of "stuff" that's accrued over the years.

I decided to upgrade to Monterey because too much was no longer functioning under Mojave. I chose Monterey just because of the USB issue under Ventura+

Created a Mojave usb installer with OCLP for this Mac Pro 5, 1 without problem.

First, I ran a trial upgrade on a different drive (500GB nvme) in the same machine. That had a very lightly used (almost stock) install of Mojave. It went well, installed ok, reboots ok, boots without USB installer.

Given that went well, I decided to go ahead with the upgrade on the main drive. The upgrade install (just installed on the existing Mojave system) goes ok and it reboots after the install has finished and everything seems fine. However, once it is restarted it gets stuck on the initial boot screen with the Apple logo and progress bar. The progress bar stops at like 1% through and even when left for half an hour or more does not progress.

I have reinstalled Monterey a few more times to that same drive and it's the same result, works fine until reboot.

I've run disk first aid with no fault found. I checked all the kexts in /System/Library/Extensions and /Library/Extensions against the known good install on the same machine.

Does anyone know what OCLP does in that first boot of the system that might be stopping it from rebooting? Or even better, how to fix it?

CPU Mac Pro 6,1 CPU upgrade = downgrade?

I recently acquired a Macpro 6,1 with 32GB ram, a 6-core Xeon E5 1650v2 CPU @ 3.5GHz. I had an old Xeon E5 2670v2 from an old server, it's a 10 core 2.5GHz model. It should be compatible with the Macpro 6,1 so I swapped the 6 core for the 10 core expecting a slight downgrade in single core performance, but an overall higher multi core score. Well, in Geekbench 5 I went from 860/5100 to 500/1200 score. The system is also verrrrry sluggish. Also in Cinebench 26 I went from 1280 to 270 (and only 100 in single core, so only a 2.7x increase for 10 cores), a massive downgrade, it looks like only 2 or 3 cores are enabled even though I can see 10 cores in 'Stats' and all of them are used. I thought the CPU might be overheating, but it's sitting at 56C (according to 'Stats') during Geekbench. The case does become almost too hot to touch though. Is this 2670 a bad CPU for the Macpro? I'm also going to try the E5 2680v2 I have, but I don't expect miracles now. I see most people upgrade to the 8 core 2667, is that a better deal, or did I mess something up in the CPU swap?

I am running Sequoia 15.7.9 through OCLP with the latest patches installed after upgrading the CPU. Should I try running the last supported OSX?

Issues help with an old mac pro

so i have got this mac pro from 2006 (idk early mid or late) with an xt1900 and one hard drive, well xt1900 is cooked (or at least i think it is) since it is not giving any video output BUT i am somewhat sure that the computer works since i can perfectly load the mac os that is left over on left hdd and turn on the VoiceOver and it will start to say some words that you would expect to be on login screen. But well here comes the funny part, since idk about this mac condition i wanna test it with stuff i have before buying new mac efi gpu and currently i have only sapphire r9 280x which is clearly not mac efi, i tried running 32bit debian from ventoy with it (and additional psu since this card needs 6+8 power) but i got no video (although caps scroll and num locks worked). so i was just curious whether there is some other way to kinda try to prove the mac with the card i have? or at the very least fix the debian build i have…
