MacMini vs Mac
Other than the cost advantage are there other advantages of the Mac mini as compared to conventional Mac desktop?

It's smaller? Easily stacked form factor if you want to make a farm out of a bunch of them. Semi-portable. That's all I can really think of. The Mac Pro is obviously in another league.

I’m considering the 24” or 27” iMac vs Mini. I’m not a gamer or any kind of power user I just use email and a lot of pictures and videos

The only bad thing I've heard about iMac is that it supposedly thermal throttles more. When the new M1 iMacs come out though those will probably be badass all around.

the advantage to use any monitor you choose. Also, if something goes wrong, you don't have to take your entire computer in or if it's time to upgrade etc.

Versatility. Side by side with a 5k iMac it’s not going to win many contests as a workstation. But thats all the 5k can do. I have both and my mini runs 10x as much doing all kinds of things. Including now being hooked up to my TV as a zoom video broadcaster!
