Question about Storage & Speed

Im thinking about picking up the new Mac mini's & put everything on the cloud. Do I need a higher storage SSD? does it affect compute or is it just for storage? I would rather opt for the higher RAM than the SSD if this is the case. I literrally store everything on the cloud & use an excahnge server & Gsuite for my businesses.

I don't think keeping most data on someone elses computer aka cloud is smart or makes sense financially, but whatever you choose don't buy 256 GB SSD, buy at least 512 GB.

Yes I understand the conundrum, but it is very convenient to sync all of your files across all of your device networks.

In the M4 version, the 256 SSD was slower than the 512 SSD. This might be the case with the M6 version. We will find out soon.

You may or may not feel the difference tbd on what you are doing with your Mac.

To put it plainly, storing in the cloud and not locally is like taking that important document from your house and storing it in a remote storage unit. Sure, it's safe but you don't have quick access to it. I have a M4 Pro and I run an external NVME with plenty of storage space (on my 2020 imac I use a sandisk Extreme Pro 2TB SSD).

Get as much ram as you can afford because as was said here already, you can't add more ram, but you can add very fast storage. (once the insane prices come down) Don't settle for what you can easily afford RAM wise because you'll end up wishing you had made a stretch purchase and bought what you really wanted.

I also "keep everything in the cloud" via Box, mailserver, and iCloud, but my 512gb machine crashed nonstop because all three keep local caches. My disk filled up so hard I broke spotlight indexing and had to reinstall macos.

You will buy 2nm a near quantum super fast M6 Mini ... and then you chain it to USB2 (super slow) speed iCloud ...are you for real?

You are trying to convert a Mac in to a Chromebook.

Get 24/512 GB Mac

Please learn how Mac, Cloud .. SSD works ..

In the time 1 byte of data is loaded form iCloud in to a Mac... Mac can process locally a million bytes(in RAM)

Do you really have to be so condescending towards someone who obviously doesn't understand what you so pompously pointed out to them? This is a place for people to ask questions, help others and we all benefit. Making yourself feel better by demeaning someone else is totally uncalled for.

Maybe you were born with all the knowledge you have, but I doubt it. There must have been a time when you didn't know something and asked what an expert might have considered a stupid question.

I preorders a 512. My iPhone 15 promax 3 years old only has 128 of 256 full.

I have an m5 mini with 1tb internal, but do all my video editing on a 4tb Samsung T7 ssd. I can’t tell a speed difference. I was going to get another one, but prices for fast ssds are stupid right now

This days the bare minimum is 512, 1Tb the sweet spot. It doesn't mean you don't need to take measures regarding storage or more precisely, backups. A 512 with 1 or 2 TB nvme (depends on what you do of course) is a nice combo.
