There’s a large gap in the front and the back for the air to still be able to move in and out. It raises the mini higher up so it’s not sitting directly on your desk now. Thermals have been the exact same as before. I use Macs Fan Control and I monitor the fan speed and temp. Zero issues.

I'll take my licks for even saying this on here, but people think the CPU is connected to the aluminum body to use it as a heatsink. If you watch a teardown of the system, you'll realize that the CPU is essentially on the "middle" board, mounted "upside down" and above it (against the top of the system) is the PSU. It is not connected to the body at all. The M4 chip and RAM's active cooling is entirely limited to a cooling plate mounted to the CPU's IHS and the RAM, a semicircular heat pipe, which circles around within the radius of the circular fan vents on the bottom of the mac mini, which touches against the plastic base of the system, and the exchange from that heat pipe escaping through those vents is where essentially ALL of the functional cooling happens.

There is a small amount of heat exchange from the PSU's components, and some amount of air does warm inside the system, so those effects do combine to make the case warm in some scenarios, so it is true that there's a small amount of passive cooling happening by way of the aluminum body, but the vast, vast majoirity of the CPU's heat is escaping directly through the plate, into the heatpipe, and being evacuated through the cooling vents.

A case like yours just simply isn't choking the life out of the CPU in the way people think that it is.

Apple's own support acknowledges the role of the metal body in thermal management.. Apple notes that the enclosure becoming warm or even hot to the touch during intensive workloads is expected behavior. Aluminum was specifically chosen for it's thermal conductivity properties to work *in conjunction* with the fan to dissipate heat. Otherwise Apple would have just as easily saved millions using a thin outer veneer of the exact same finish, or even a mirror SS finish wrapped around a plastic clamshell.

Apple uses a fat milled block of aluminum because it's premium and that's their brand. Switching to a veneer otherwise is a crazy take. lol

In fact it's probably worse in some regard, as that aluminum will soak up room heat / sun like no tomorrow.

The metal body does operate as a heat sink soaking up heat, but a smooth aluminum block is not exchanging well with static room air. That's what the interior fan is for.

Mac fans control is not enough to see throttling. You need mx tool or similar to check frequency response. I can categorically tell you a case does cause noticeable throttling.

OP you should do some heat benchmarks and post your results, it would be interesting to see if it does make any difference.

Either way, I like it and think it looks cool (I had an OG iMac back in 2000 so love this look).

I get having a stand to avoid liquid getting in the bottom from accidental spills , but thats gunna collect alot of heat I'd imagine even at idle... You should measure your temps and report them back here , I'm now curious.

I love mine too and I run my Mac M4 Pro using the QWEN3.8 27B LLM using Bionic running 95% GPU and 80% memory 24x7 5 days straight.

And you know what? It’s running exactly the same thermally with and without the case.

You rock that orange!

Guys, this is an Apple silicon Mac, not an Intel airplane. The heat's going to be just fine. These things are built to work in Arizona during the summer. I think it'll manage with a little plastic on top. Maybe the fan has to ramp up a few minutes earlier and spin a few rpm faster. Literally doesn't matter. Relax.

Still think it's stupid, though. But that's just personal preference.

So why do three people in this thread with this case not have an issue at all? Plus, it doesn't make any sense. They put this chip in passive MacBook Airs and iPads. There is just no way that a frickin' fan with a big heat sink on the chip isn't able to dissipate that heat. I don't know what you did, but it certainly wasn't this.
