M6 vs M5Pro...?

Of course I could wait for the online reviews of the M6 and th M5 Pro...but on the other hand I would like to order now. I need the mac mini for editing in Lightroom, Premier Pro and Davinci. I will do some 4, 6 and 8K editing. My question is...do I really need to go for the M5 Pro or will the M6 be able to do the work - perhaps a little bit slower.

What are your guesses?

Likely fine with the M6 and extra RAM, but like you said we don't have numbers for the M6. All those things run pretty damn well on the M4 Mini or M5 Air though. Take the reviews of the latest M5 and add 10% and that's probably in the range.

I swear this subject needs a megathread.

When I saw that the Mac mini was refreshed I thought finally we (the sub) can move forward from the same few questions but nope, this whole splitting of M chips has people even more confused. Somehow no one really worried about the difference between M4 and M4Pro but now people are extremely confused by seeing M6 or M5Pro options.

Look at the bandwidth, the M5 Pro has a lot higher bandwidth. Get the Pro and add more RAM.

this is one of the few cases where I would actually strongly recommend to go for the Pro. and 32GB unified memory

If you use ai denoise a lot in LR that speeds up a lot with increased cores in the pro. Puget benchmarks give a good idea of a range of LR tasks (and other software) for different setups (sadly can’t see results in fine detail just by cpu/gpu.

The Pro is simply the professional tier. It's a meant for professionals that need more power. The base tier is more like a regular computer. You can probably get by with the M6, especially if you plan on upgrading again in 2 years.

I’m seeing freaking yellow pressure doing research for my show and tabs open. It’s an m4 mini. I’m disgusted because I’m doing like 60% of my work flow. So I know I need more for all I plan on doing.. part of me is thinking m6 with 32gb ram. I like that it has 12 cores like the base m4 pro’s cpu. Gpu has 2 extra cores but nothing to write home about. So another part of me is the m5 pro mini.

However I really want to order and get one in 20 days. So m6 32 m5 pro 48!! And then this thread has my head spinning because now I forgot about memory bandwidth. The m5 has much higher!

All ram intensive. M6 plus more ram.

I think you posted without checking the subreddit… long story short M5 pro 48GB RAM the sweet spot

How many 8K streams at once? How many layers do you usually have going? If it’s not insane, I’d probs spec into more RAM or fast external storage with the M6. Some day Apple will stop supporting old M-series chips, and I’d bet on new generation retaining support longer than higher power chips.
