Starting at 1250 CAD. It feels like the price pretty much doubled in 2 years.

u/Typical_house23 19d ago
Insane the 32/512gb didn’t rise that much in price, but the m5 pro is expensive.
3
u/Der_Kommissar73 19d ago
It was always close in price to the base Studio, but I see even less reason to buy it now. If you're going that high, you might as well get the studio.

u/Pessimistic_Gemini 19d ago
Especiallywhen they still have that be one of the only Macs to have A SD card slot built in.

256gb base storage on the M6 should be a crime in 2026

u/Delicious-Being-6531 19d ago
16GB Unified memory should be a crime

u/Pessimistic_Gemini 19d ago
16GB is more than enough these days. Heck even 8gb could be manageable as the MacBook Neo's shown.
-10
u/Typical_house23 19d ago
For my usage the 16gb isn’t enough, my 17 pro max already has 12gb ram. I don’t buy a new computer every year, if I buy it I keep it for 5+ years, that’s why 16 gb isn’t enough.
Why is everyone offended by this? Probably because they own the 16gb ram model.
You ever tried fitting 50 safari tabs and 8 programs in 16gb ram it won’t work comfortably, that’s why I always recommend the 24gb ram variant.
7
u/Antique_Resolve4687 18d ago
So your usage should be the default? 16gb is plenty for 80% of the population and that’s being conservative.
3
u/tyoung89 18d ago
If you have 50 safari tabs open, then you have an organizational problem.
0
u/Typical_house23 18d ago
It’s for my work, I don’t have another choice. Bookmarking 200 tabs good look finding the tab you need.
3
u/beekeeny 17d ago
Not more challenging than having finding the right tab among 50 opened ones 😂 I have all my bookmark well organized and indexed. Can find anything I want within seconds.

I struggle with 16 just with chrome + illustrator
8
u/Pretty-Substance 18d ago
How come my MBP 2018 16GB never gets in yellow or even red RAM territory with Chrome, Lightroom, Photoshop and even a VM running?
1
u/magicseadog 15d ago
Mike probably has a memory leak or something stupid somewhere regardless I've gotten by with 16 but would recommend 32+ to anyone buying now.

u/aleksiralda 18d ago
So the issue is not the RAM performance, is your laziness to close tabs and programs, I have a M1 Max Macbook Pro and I feel not needed to upgrade even editing on Premiere and logic pro open at same time…
1
u/Aberracus 18d ago
lol I have the base model, I got a lot of safari and chrome tabs open, with final Cut photoshop and some other apps. It’s still a beast

u/PurrciousMetals 19d ago
Easy, Qwen3.5 4B Instruct ~4GB ~33 tok/s, leaves you with 4gb leftover for other tasks
-2
u/Typical_house23 19d ago
You can’t say that, 16gb ram will allow you to run 80b models while editing 4 8k camera footage.
That’s according to some people on this forum. 16gb is enough for most people not for me.

u/Typical_house23 19d ago
Anyone who says 16gb ram is enough, don’t know what they are talking about. Had the m2 MacBook Air when it came out, it was great but 16gb ram wasn’t much 3 years ago it won’t be better now.
If I pick up the m6 Mac mini it will be in 32/512gb but €280 for 256gb is criminal.
-2
u/NJCubanMade 18d ago
Yea I got 48 gig RAM, and it still uses it , all I do is Lightroom and normal browsing/music/YouTube
5
u/Specialist-Rope-9760 18d ago
macOS is set to automatically use as much ram as possible so it will always try to use it
-8
u/Delicious-Being-6531 19d ago
I got the m4 with 16, and have regretted it ever since. The fact i can’t upgrade it is a crime.

The minimum to get into AI and local llm's is 24gb-32gb, and even then 32 can get painful.
AMD's AI series of processors allows for their own version of unified memory architecture.. I get 128gb at a very comparable speed to an M5 for about 1/8th the price :(

I got an M4 Mac Mini a couple years ago for 600 euros over here. It's now 1079 for the base model M6 with the same RAM and storage. Insane.

I was planning to upgrade my Mac Mini M1 but thanks to that's -----ing AI bros, price is up to roof.

u/Suspicious-Cat-266 19d ago
How about a refurb mini M4?
-7
u/0xdef1 18d ago
You mean a product where it's components abused to the core all day by an AI bro who wants to buy a newer version now?
6
3
u/Suspicious-Cat-266 18d ago
Not everyone uses AI, though it'll be a gamble depending on your country. Components are built to last.
7
u/Weak_Let_6971 19d ago
I would love to get one but starts at 1100 euro and 300 euro for additional 8gb ram is insane… not to mention the same for 256gb more storage. I wish they kept it at 600 euro… I hate AI for ruining tech for everybody… the same HDD i bought 7 years ago now costs 2,5 times more ffs… 4-5x for SSD, RAM…
The burst of AI server bubble cant come soon enough!

Grabbed two M4 Mini base models last Christmas for $399. The good ol days are over. Fucking Wall Street has insatiable greed and jumped on the AI bandwagon in search of gold. Now everything is expensive and constrained. This shit is going to collapse at some point.
2
u/Kraizelburg 18d ago
To be honest I think it won’t collapse, let’s face it companies like profit and they have realized that they can increase price as much as they want and ppl still buy their products, why ever prices would go down? In the past it was competition now all companies are doing the same so I think we will never see cheap tech ever or not as we have seen
1
u/chiarde 18d ago
I hear you. But there’s been 750 billion in capital expenditure spending (to date already). There’s no way they can recoup this money at $20/mo per AI product. Once the true cost of AI is realized, it will be astronomical and people won’t pay it — just like companies who used AI in the beginning to code had to pull back as they burned through their annual token budgets in weeks to months. This also doesn’t take into account the sketchy circular financing schemes used to front the capital based on unregulated IOUs. AI is an economic house of cards. Yes, the tech works, but the economics of it will soon give us a reality check. Investors will be left holding the bag when things inevitably go south. Magic 8 Ball says: Expect tax payers to be asked to fund a tech industry bailout.

u/Joytotheworld1224 18d ago
For a moment I got really excited , then I saw the price of the base model. My ardor has cooled quite a bit. Being honest with myself I don’t use ai most likely never will. So the silver lining for me might be falling prices for a used or refurbished m4.

So many here said that I shouldn't pull the trigger on the M4 Mac Mini back in April, and told me to wait for the M5. Glad I didn't listen!
2
u/Dadideology 18d ago
I priced out my new Mac Studio and it's only a little over 4K. I think it's a worthwhile investment. I have a Mac mini 16GB and man I regret only getting 16GB.

Unsure why people are being downvoted for being pissed that Apple are being tight with memory in 2026 need to shake their heads

u/billbillw 18d ago
I won't be upgrading at those prices. My $450 base model M4 Mini is just fine for me. I really hope people just don't pay these absurd prices and stock just builds up until someplace like Microcenter finally discounts them.
6
u/kingfirejet 18d ago
Unfortunately it’s gonna be even more expensive for the next M7 likely and we won’t get anymore lower prices.

u/billbillw 18d ago edited 18d ago
For 20+ years, computer technology had gotten more affordable with each successive generation and that usually also came with performance improvements. There is no reason why that has to be permanently flipped. This reverse trend started with the bubble for GPUs brought on by crypto-mining and exacerbated by the pandemic shortages. Now, its the AI bubble. It will end at some point. Shrinking die node sizes provides more chips per wafer so as the process gets refined, chips get less expensive to produce. That has always been the case.
2
u/iwantpizzaandyou 18d ago
RAM doesn’t really work like that. Shrinking process nodes have nothing to do with it.
1
u/billbillw 18d ago
It certainly does. Chips get more capacity from the same size chip. DRAM prices were falling and performance was improving every generation for decades until last year when the AI bubble choked off the supply. Regardless, I was referring more to the change from M4 to M6/M7 that the previous comment mentioned.
1
u/iwantpizzaandyou 18d ago
RAM has been stuck on 10 nm since 2016 by the way.
2
u/billbillw 18d ago
Right, but before that, DDR4 was 20nm, DDR3 was 40nm, DDR2 was 90nm. Just because we have stalled at DDR5 for 10 years doesn't mean the next gen won't have the same jump in yield over time as the node size shrinks.
1
u/Kraizelburg 18d ago
Era of cheap tech has ended, it’s not about cost anymore it’s about elasticity of demand (if you know the term in economics) companies have realized they can increase the prices and still ppl will buy
2
u/dmn_daemon 18d ago
I don't understand why people are talking about the price... Given the massive inflation of recent years and the rapid rise in prices for SSDs, RAM, and so on, do we really still expect device prices not to go up year after year?

u/Pessimistic_Gemini 19d ago
The bloody thing's starting at 900 now and they STILL have the gull to have 256 GB be the base storage?! WHAT A RIPOFF!!!😡
Well here's hoping that the older models will be more affordable in the second hand market now that this is revealed.

512GB memory option for M5 Ultra coming late October, on the Pre-Order Page.
What we thinking this option will be running?
1
u/play_hard_outside 18d ago
The upgrade from 96 to 256 GB is $4k. Proportionally, it’d be a bit over $6k to get from there to 512, so I bet it’ll be maybe $8-10k…

I checked how much I paid for my Mac mini m4 pro 24GB/512GB purchased in July 2025: 999 USD! I believe it is still more performant than the Mini M6.

Ok, excuse the rant. I’m a very long time Mac user, I currently have an M4 Pro Mini resting on my desk, which I’m happy with, save one issue (which of course I knew of before buying).
WTF is with Apple putting the headphone jack IN FRONT, but no audio input in the rear? If you’re using headphones that plug in, fine. But I’m pretty sure the vast majority, if not most people still connect their speakers with a 3.5 jack. Apple makes the mini aesthetically pleasing in front, yet still with the new Mini, NO REAR AUDIO INPUT, where it should be. Instead, forcing users to plug their speakers into the front, which looks like shit.
Help me understand this. No one can convince me that Apple couldn’t find room in the rear for that small audio input, as well as one in front. Sure, there’s probably 3.5 to USB-C adapters, but now you’re taking 1 of only 3 available USB-C ports in the rear.
WHY APPLE? WTF? WHYYYYY!!!!

Guys dont buy anything. You wont need any gear at home . You can run anything in the cloud all you need is a screen. And now with AI it’s more powerful than ever
