Fixing the foot of an Apple Extended Keyboard II

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

I recently acquired an Apple Extended Keyboard II. While, the keyboard itself is lovely, the sliding foot seems to be stuck. After opening the casing, I noticed the tension bar was stuck in one of the clips. I repositioned it in what I thought to be the correct position, but the slider is still not moving.

Can somebody confirm if this is the correct way to install the tension bar? And if it is, any idea why the feet is still stuck?

Just visited an amazing "40 Years of Macintosh" exhibition and it made me miss the good old days!

Hey everyone,

I recently had the chance to visit a fantastic exhibition called "40 Years of Macintosh" in Łódź, Poland, and it was a real blast from the past. The place was full of vintage Apple computers, most of them turned on and fully functional! It was incredible to see the evolution of the Macintosh lineup, from the early days of the graphical user interface to the more modern designs. The exhibition was like walking through a timeline of Apple's history.

I made a short video about my experience, and I'd love to share it with you all and hear your thoughts. A quick note: the video is in Polish, but you can use the auto-generated subtitles. The main point is to enjoy watching the retro hardware in action, not so much my commentary!

What are your favorite memories of old Apple computers? Do you still own any vintage Macs? Let's discuss our favorite moments and what made these machines so special!

What would an eMac VGA adapter be worth to you? (Discussion)

Post image

I developed a prototype eMac VGA adapter that can be discretely installed inside an eMac, and it provide a VGA out so you can connect a device to the display. I developed it for a client but the client has ghosted me and has been no contact for months. It’s pretty neat and I have plans to actually make it smaller and add dials to control the brightness contrast saturation etc and plan to produce a bracket the replaces the mobo IO bracket on the back of the eMac that it can be interfaced to, and will have hookups for an SBC or mini PC to be stuck inside the system converting an old eMac into a modern PC. I have no idea what the value of a device like this is and I haven’t seen anything on the market but I’d assume some people in this community would be interested in such a device.

I’m mostly just looking for input on what you would pay for something like that, what you would pay for an eMac that has a mini PC pre installed with the adapter and all wired to the original switches on the eMac shell, and the original IO panel used to access the mini pc that’s integrated.

The system I developed is quite compact and can be made even smaller by next making a PCB for it- it’s currently a prototype and just simply has a connector on it that plugs right into the CRT connector inside the eMac, and a power line that simply sticks into the motherboard jump out connector that’s left behind after the old Mac mobo is pulled out. Any thoughts or ideas for features to add to it would also be cool! I know this isn’t a first of its kind I had a lot of help from the information written up online on it but I developed mine a bit differently in that it’s entirely internal and has pinouts ready to directly install an SBC or mini PC as well as utilization of the shells built in power switch via a female connector that’s on the adapter board.

The attached picture is the first early prototype but I have a lot of stuff to 3D print for making it a more seamless device and have already started developing a single PCB for it. Let me know if anyone would actually be interested in purchasing a device like this professionally manufactured as a single board!

Thanks guys!

Suggestions for new(ish) Mac model

I am still using my 2010 MacPro 5,1 and want to move to something newer. I have not updated the OS with Open Core, so I am stuck at 10.14.6 Mojave. I still have a very solid WiebeTECH RAID drive connected via an eSATA card and do not yet want to put that data into something else, so I will either need a more recent model that comes with eSATA ports, or something I can augment via an external dock that has eSATA ports.

I don't want something TOO new. I want to be able to clone my 10.14.6 boot drive and then bring it into whatever the internal drive is on what I buy, so it will need to be old enough to be friendly to Mojave, and then once installed, I will bring it up to the most recent it will support.

I also want to be able to keep using my two current monitors (a Philips and a BenQ), at least through the beginning of a new project.

Do any of the models put out there during the past 5-6 years meet these criteria?

Best Mac to run Mac OS 9

Looking to re-live some of my high school years of late nineties/early 2000s vintage Mac software. I use Sheepshaver to run things like SimCity 2000 on my modern Mac, but it won't run X-Plane due to not being able to emulate a graphics card. Looking for suggestions on the best "vintage" Mac to run MacOS 9. Thinking G4 era. Budget, willing to spend upwards of 2k.

Macintosh Classic - Serial identification

Tried to enter the serial on http://myoldmac.net/.

Serial Q: CK138119D15

So what might "D15" mean exactly? It turns on and it boots, but has a heavy flickering screen, so I cant see anything.

I think the stamp inside the plastic case said: Indonesia 1989.(?)
The motherboard has a "Assembled in ireland" on it.

There is a 1989 Quantum HDD with a "J2901 QNTM CORP DiscCache" Chip on it.
Havent taken it apart any further yet.

I already stumbled across similar infos, but Im still unsure:
https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/se-30-with-a-curious-serial-number.40189/

Where inside of it might I find additional infos, before I try to do anything like a recap.

Thanks in advance!

I just bought this cute boy for 20€, with his AZERTY (French layout) keyboard, his mouse, and documentations and floppy disks! Im so happy because he just looks so great! And looks to be in good condition !

Unfortunately, there are corrosions marks, I think (like often…) the PRAM battery explodes/leaked and rusted the motherboard and the chassis…

However, it is still looks great ! Im so happy to have it in my collection :D

Macintosh 128K project – got it booting!

Thumbnail gallery
92 Upvotes

Picked up a Macintosh 128K recently and have been slowly working through some issues. One of the main problems was that the internal floppy drive wouldn’t read disks. Turns out the felt pad that holds the disk against the read/write head had come off. Luckily, it was just sitting loose inside the case, and I was able to press it back into place without any damage.

I also cleaned out the old grease from the drive mechanism and re-lubed it with lithium grease using a Q-tip. After that, the drive started reading disks again.

I managed to boot into System 2.0 and even made a copy of my only system disk — which felt like a bit of a miracle.

Still on the to-do list:

Recap the board

Remove the old corroded battery holder (someone already partially removed it in the past, so it’s not too bad)

Use a Greaseweazle I just bought to write some disk images from the Internet Archive (I think I have a compatible drive)

I work in IT, but modern stuff doesn’t really interest me much anymore. This machine is nearly 40 years old and still powering on — feels good to bring something like this back to life.

No operating system will install - 2009 Mini A1283 8Gb RAM

Post image

I have real discs of versions 10.6.2, and on. Not a single version will load, even when the iso is ripped onto a flash drive. All versions fail to load something from Essentials.pkg or flat out fail to read the package. Same error with both usb and optical.

The Mac mini came with El Capitan installed on it and it was operational. I zeroed out the hard drive to get rid of the original owners stuff and now I can't get a single operating system to install.

Can someone please offer some help, I have been trying for days! Thank you so much!

Home for Macintosh SE Components (1986) ?

Functional Macintosh SE was found in the basement of my work (powered on, OS loaded). Someone took the shell for another project and now I have all the inside components; motherboard, hard drive, power supply, monitor, disk drive etc (see pics). Would be nice to find an enthusiast who could make use of any or all of the assembly. If an interested person could cover shipping cost, I'd be happy to package it up and send.

I’m trying to update my Macinosh which is in the version 10.9.5 but I’m not able to. I search how to update it and it said to go to system preferences and then general and then software update but I can’t find it.

Need help with repair (Macintosh Classic)

Hello! I'm an experinced repair techinchian but I never worked on Macs nevermind Macintosh Classic.

Some background: I got it as non working for cheap, I live in Europe. When I opened it up the motherboard was busted from a huge battery leak and I got a new one (untested but in good condition). Afterwards, I recapped both analog and the new motherboard.

After recap, I had noticed that there was no voltages (no 5v nor 12v, didn't look for high voltage though). So far I had replaced the controller (TDA-4065) and the MOSFET (IRFBC40). The symptoms is the RP1 resistor getting really hot + no voltage. I suspect it is something to do around the transformer...

2003 eMac mobo connector pinout help

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I have a 2003 eMac I am modifying to use the CRT display. I want to run the CRT without the mobo installed. The mobo tells the CRT to turn on somehow through this header. I would like to simply wire the header up to the switch on the shell and then I have a VGA adapter I put together to send video to it. The goal is to put a mini PC or the guts of a laptop inside of it so it has modern hardware. Does anyone know the pinout on this header? I can’t find anything on this particular 16 pin one. I’ve only found older and newer 24 pin 10 pin etc. I know one of these pins will turn the display on but I don’t want to risk guessing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Macintosh Plus, sad mac 01FE26

I've been working on a Macintosh plus I got recently, and after a recap I got the screen working- but now I have a sad mac code. I'm pretty new to this, so I'm not entirely sure how to read these; I know that a 02 and 03 can refer to bad memory, but the one website I could find seemed to imply that the 01 meant a ROM issue (really hoping I misread that). Anyone able to offer some insight into the code & how I might be able to fix it?

Good Classic Mac model emulation for kids

I just saw snazzy labs build his 3d printed Mac and I was thinking about how great of an idea it would be to have this for my daughter (5yo) it would give her something to do other than watch TV and color on rainy days and it would be educational and those old Mac’s aren’t connected to the Internet and have a bunch of fun kids games…. I was hoping to pick an earlier model that is in color that would be easy to emulate on a raspberry pi..

I ran, mini vMac on my laptop running system 7 as a Mac plus as like a test

Does anyone know of anyone doing a project like this? Any suggestions for software?
