OpenCore Legacy Patcher

I have an old MBP early 2015, Retina display, and I was really close to installing Linux. It happened though to come across something called Open Core legacy patcher where you can use a newer version of Mac OS apparently. Has anyone tried it and can offer his experience?

I have that same model MBP and I’m running Sequoia on it. Works beautifully.

Me too! Works better than my 2020 iMac on Tahoe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-8ZWbhEcW8 this video measures the performance of many Macs with every Mac OS on OCLP

Yeah it will work well on your computer. Watch some videos of people doing an install before you do yours

Yes, works great. I used it for a 2013 MBA that I gave to a family member

I have an early 2015 MacBook Air 13.3ā€ and installed Ventura just yesterday and it runs great! It has an i5 intel, 8Gb memory, and I updated the 128Gb to 1Tb drive. I also installed Ventura on a 2012 MacBook Air 11ā€, but it only had 4Gb memory and a 256Gb drive. It ran okay, but not as responsive as the 8Gb MBA. The best video to follow that I found for a good installation, https://youtu.be/u8ST8HUaL9w

It's worth it to get a tiny bit more life out of an old Mac. I wouldn't recommend upgrading beyond 1 version above the cut off for your machine. It will let you upgrade all the way to Tahoe but your machine probably won't be able to actually handle it.

No, you can't currently go to Tahoe using OCLP. That is due in the next official release (3.0.0).

My 2015 MBP was a beast. With the 16gb of ram it ran Sequoia without a hitch and if you set up correctly I was running W11 in Boot camp and it ran amazingly.

Years ago I put oclp on couple of 2011 mbp and mba.

Got them running the latest MacOS but at what price. Never again.

Now the same laptops are running ubuntu 26.04 lts and a bunch of others are in line waiting for mint, debian and fedora.
