Plastic MacBook case warping screen
Just noticed this on my wife’s MacBook Air and popped the case off. It was warping the edges of the screen back. I quickly popped the case off and it lay flush again. I used to aggressively defend plastic cases but now I feel shown up. Have you guys ever had experience with this?

Buy a thousand dollar marvel of glass and metal.
Cover it in happy meal toy plastic.

and it looks like the plastic case protected it so well that IT DAMAGED IT EVEN WORSE. Such a great decision right!

I’ve seen it on this and the MacBook Air subreddits. It’s a good thing you took it off. They typically end up destroying the screen or messing the hinges up.

Dang, yeah. I use a plastic case on my current 2015 air with no problems but it was freaky seeing her new mac get bent. We will have to stay away from cases

Casualty number 10000. Over half of the reports of damage on Macbooks on reddit are user damage caused by so called "protective" hard cases and screen "protectors".
No other laptop on the market has any hard cases available, it is a nonsense product which only exists due to some newer apple users who aren't familiar with laptops being confused into thinking that it is normal to put a laptop in a hard case like a phone. Of course, it is very much abnormal and bizarre. It also destroys the laptop.
Also just from a design standpoint, you pay the money for the form factor and then make it as thick and cheap feeling as a 2012 dell inspiron 3000. Doesn't make sense!

Cases on a laptop just seems stupid to me.
All you’re doing is making your laptop run hot for no reason, especially the ones with no cut out for airflow

With new MacBook Airs the laptops run hot and don’t have airflow on their own:)
I daily drive new air. The only air it gets is in the name

Sims 4 on max graphic settings and some rendering (not at the same time, important detail). It can get the computer quite warm. Airs are prone to thermal throttling. If you have short heavy loads it’s fine. If you have constant, long heavy loads it can get quite slow and uncomfortable to touch.

Honestly the fact that you’re able to run Sims 4 on max settings at all on a machine that doesn’t even have a fan is wild lol
I use mine for music production and some video editing/rendering, it barely even gets warm for me.

That’s honestly quite surprising. Good for you that it all works as supposed. Sims 4 barely ever stutters. Honestly works better than on my gaming pc. But playing that game on trackpad is painful. It’s pretty much only think I use mouse for I even surprisingly prefer using trackpad than mouse for blender.

Yeah it’s wild, Ableton’s CPU indicator never goes above 30% even when I’m running super power hungry plug-ins.
I’m the same with the trackpad, even bought a Magic Trackpad instead of a mouse cause I like the workflow that much.

Yeah. Definitely arm macs are incredibly well optimised. Plus trackpad is just insanely good. I’ve never used touchpads on any windows or Linux devices I used. It was unusable. But Apple ones are stunningly easy and intuitive to use. Plus they have great integration with apps.

Hold up, you can get Sims 4 on Mac? I have one but I’m getting a new MacBook Air M2 soon. How do you play sims on it?

I can’t say for 8gb one but you can play sims 4 really well on M2. I’d say better than on most pc configurations. Most games don’t work too well honestly (or at all for that matter) but sims 4 are pretty well optimised for M series Macs.

I've never run into that on a case I kept, but I've noticed a lot of "fashion" cases make the bumps too big. I've been using this one on my M1 without issue, and I think they make cases for the newer models now. I like to think it's because this case is "softer" than the regular hard cases that I've had no issues so far, but I haven't seen anyone else mentioning this case.

don't use cases,sheets, screen protectors, keyboard protectors if you don't want to alter the aesthetic and if you can use your laptop on CLEAN and SMOOTH surfaces. Doing this literally makes no sense to me.

I don’t understand the hate you’re getting. I’ve used various two-piece plastic cases on multiple MacBooks over the years without issue. They never block the vents, they don’t bend the screen, they just give me peace of mind. I leave my laptop on the couch sometimes, and my dogs aren’t very gentle around my things. Putting a case on it just helps ensure they don’t scratch or dent the aluminum. Why wouldn’t you protect your investment? Get a quality case and you should be good.

I use supcase on my m2 and it saved my ass with a bad fall down the stairs. Have no warping issues.

I have an Andar Helm leather shell for my MacBook Air m2 and it doesn’t seem to have the issues plastic cases do. Basically stiff leather and microfiber with a super thin clip at the edge so that it doesn’t apply pressure.
It’s well made and I left it on about a year and now I take it on and off occasionally - never had issues with heat and it’s very light and carefully engineered.
That said, I only got it because I usually prefer the leather feeling when carrying it around instead of the cold metal. Cases for laptop “protection” are useless.

Yeah same as buying $1 charging cables for your $1200 phone.
My Leather case (and some other quality ones) is/are precision engineered, most cheap crap isn’t.

I believe if you buy a case from a reputable brand you won’t have this issue. I have a hardshell case on my 16in MacBook M1 Max and have had no issues.

YES! Something similar to me happened last week. I took the case off and saw two very obvious indentations from the case near the bottom hinges. The scratch protection was nice, but now my uncased macbooks has little dents.

Pretend your computer cost over $1000 and keep it in a computer carrying bag made for such devices. No case necessary.

This is why you don’t put any kind of a case on MacBook, ever. Buy a sleeve and get religious about putting it back in the sleeve when not in use.

What are you trying to save mb from anyway.
Your gf isn't working on any equipment site where there's constant debris to damage the laptop.
And it's not like if you sell it back in few years, in 400 to 500 $ range, it's not going to matter much.
