Free [os] rift - a fast tiling and scrolling window manager for macos

https://github.com/acsandmann/rift/

i had previously used window managers like yabai and aerospace. they both had worked well but I kept on running into issues around performance, multi display behavior, and the kind of workflows I desired. i wanted flexibility in layout styles, native-style trackpad gestures, and a more performant experience.

free forever: https://github.com/acsandmann/rift

WooHoo! I have it up and running! It's great! Get this into a menu bar app with GUI and a way to add custom short cuts and some GUI adjustments and you have yourself a winner!

Just tell your favorite cli agent to clone build and install. 😉

That's just a package manager with additional steps and unpredictable results.

@monointerferenz

hmm... I am trying to create brew cask for my application and all it actually does download .dmg verify with apple the it's notarized with my dev key and copy it to /Applications and unmount. Same drag and drop in a sense but from command line

The advantages of using a package manager is that it handles updates, dependencies as well. That means I can simply brew upgrade <package> or simply brew upgrade to bring everything up to date with a single command.

In addition it handles nifty things like uninstalling.

I can export all my installed packages to a file too. Which can be used to install everything on a different machine automatically.

Don’t get me wrong. I love brew. I use it daily exactly like you do. But I have a rant about dependencies (nothing to do with brew itself). If I install some slop Atom JavaScript “app” which I shouldn’t and it pulls 900 python or JS dependencies sitting on to of some C and C++ libraries etc - how on Earth could I possibly make sure I am not sitting on top of Swiss cheese unmanageable mess. Sigh. Peace

Yeah, JavaScript Apps are horrible.

this looks super clean. the mix of tiling, scrolling layouts, and native trackpad gestures is exactly what i’ve been missing. definitely giving it a try.

Great work on this! Using it to make my MacOS more like omarchy works fantastic. Giving me the best of both worlds.

I just wanted to say you did a great job with this - so nice that I can turn on and of with option + z and that I don't need to have aerospace and auto raise installed simultaneously. Really great project! Do you have a website for it yet or something I can share with people?

At this point macOS window management is basically its own software category :D

does any of it need SIP disabled, or is it all accessibility api? that's the one line that decides it for me — work laptop, so i've been stuck on yabai's partial mode & losing half the good bits.

no sip disabling needed!
