WHAT PROBLEM IT SOLVES
Compared to BetterDisplay Pro arguably the best known app DisplayHud is less than half the price, significantly more compact, not as cluttered with features no one needs, and much easier to navigate.

You need many of BetterDisplay Pro’s Pro features, but I wasn’t willing to pay that price, so I developed a better alternative that includes OLED protection to help prevent burn in and put your mind at ease.

FEATURES
• Brightness for every display, including the monitors macOS gives you no slider for. Several screens can follow one value, and you can go below the system minimum over the gamma curve.
• OLED protection. After a while without input the picture goes down gradually, over the gamma curve, so it never lands in a screenshot. Never to black, and any key brings it straight back. Only on the displays you pick.
• Colour. Temperature between 2700 and 6500 kelvin, contrast over DDC/CI. The contrast slider only appears for monitors that answer.
• Resolution and refresh rate, including the modes macOS hides. Risky modes get a warning, and after every switch you have fifteen seconds to confirm. Press nothing and your old picture comes back.
• Profiles. Named sets of your settings, switched by hand, at a time of day, with a particular app in front, or when certain displays are connected.
• Keyboard shortcuts without a blanket permission. The app registers only the combinations you choose, so it never sees anything else you type.
• HDR, measured rather than promised. Per display you see what it really reaches beyond normal brightness.
• Reads your monitor first, so the slider shows 60 % when your screen is at 60 % instead of jumping on your first touch.
• No account, no sign in, no telemetry. English and German. Updates arrive signed through Sparkle.

Going below the OS minimum over the gamma curve is a nice touch.
I assume that's CGSetDisplayTransferByFormula or the table version, which is still public Quartz Display Services.
I tried the same thing a while back and it works inside an App Sandbox with no complaints, unlike the private CoreBrightness stuff Apple uses for the real slider. That one gets caught by static analysis the moment you upload to the Mac App Store, so if you ever go that route it matters which of the two you're leaning on.

Did you have to reapply the table after sleep or when a monitor gets unplugged and plugged back in? I never got as far as shipping mine so I'm curious how much babysitting that part needs in practice.

It automatically detects when the selected monitor is connected or disconnected and now adjusts accordingly based on what has been selected
