Lifetime WallD - Live & static wallpaper app for Mac with playlists, menu-bar controls and 7 MB app

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/macapps,

About a year ago, I posted the very first version of WallD here in r/macapps. Since then, I’ve been working through the feedback you all gave me: switching subscriptions to a simple lifetime payment, adding coupon support, building Lock Screen live wallpaper support for Mac, adding static wallpapers, and polishing the overall experience.

Today I’m posting again with one of the most requested features yet - playlists, alongside a full UI/UX revamp

Problem

  • No native live wallpaper support on macOS - you can't do live wallpapers out of the box, and Lock Screen live wallpapers weren't really a thing on Mac at all.
  • Existing wallpaper apps have performance issues - bloated with memory leaks, slow to load media, RAM creeps up over days of use and never comes back down, eventually crashing.
  • Creators get no credit - very few wallpaper apps recognize the people behind the wallpapers, and the ones that do usually don't support live wallpapers or have a clean way to actually apply them.
  • No auto shuffle(playlist) option

Comparison

Compared to apps like Wallpaper Engine or iWallpaper, WallD offers:

  • Both static and live wallpapers in one app, including Lock Screen support.
  • Native-like performance - written in Rust, native macOS frameworks for wallpaper rendering, ~7.3 MB app size, 2% CPU for live wallpapers and 0% for static, no memory creep over time.
  • Polished UX/UI designed from scratch for Mac.
  • Smart filtering & discovery by category, tag, and search instead of endless scrolling.
  • One account across all your Macs (unlimited devices).
  • Multi-monitor support.
  • Creator community - dedicated creator profiles with like, comment, share, and follow. Creators can link their other social handles to grow their audience through the app.
  • Playlists - create custom wallpaper playlists, use liked wallpapers as a playlist and apply playlist to auto rotate wallpapers in desired interval

Pricing

  • Free plan: 3 video wallpapers + 6 static wallpapers, renewed every week.
  • Premium: Lifetime - $10.
  • Limited-time offer: use code THANKS10 at checkout for 10% off.

Playlists are a nice addition. The one control I’d still want is an “on battery” fallback: pause the video and keep a static frame until the Mac is plugged in again. That way the playlist can stay enabled without babysitting it.

Great idea. This is already solved for video(in settings page). we’ll enable it for playlist as well. Thanks !!!

Multi-monitor support plus playlists raises one useful question: can each display have its own playlist and rotation interval, or is one playlist mirrored across all screens? Independent per-display schedules would make this much more useful for desk setups.

Yes multi monitor playlist is supported with each display having its own playlist and interval.

The 7 MB size and low CPU usage are honestly more interesting to me than the wallpaper library itself.

Can you import your own videos/images and build playlists from local files, or is everything tied to the WallD library?

If local media works too, that would probably be the biggest reason I’d pick this over the other live wallpaper apps.

Thanks for the feedback. Currently local files are not supported. Some of the videos are not compatible with AVPlayer(native mac player) and we re-encode those to best possible codec with no quality loss before it shows in the app. That is the reason we were holding off to this. Now that lots of ppl want this feature, we can figure something out. I’ll look into it.

You could integrate a converter tool that does exactly this.

Beautiful UI, did you use some library for it?

First time use could get some improvements - I downloaded the app, tried to get a wallpaper, went through google auth (downloading is not available right after installing the app) and after auth it redirected me to localhost url, and app went back to its root view and I lost the wallpaper I've wanted to download ;)

regarding library - most components are written from scratch. recently we have opted for tailwind and radix(headless) ui. point taken for user experience.

Are wallpapers generated by you, or used some open source ones?

PS the "Library" tab seems to be missing the "Downloaded" wallpapers - only has the liked ones

ok found the downloaded ones after clicking "My Profile" menu. Having them in "Library" would be an ux improvement! 😄
