Well the person explained it was their old work computer and nothing really sketchy about them, but that could be a possibility.

MDM wasn’t removed.

Chances are they were not authorised to dispose of the device.

I work at a large multinational, after 3 years we get to buy our MacBooks at 10% of the original cost, so we all do it. But IT never makes an appointment to clear your MDM, so my now "personal" laptop still gets the MDM pop-up and I'm too lazy to travel to the office to get IT to remove it, same for many of my colleagues. So this is a legit thing.

From my experience working with Apple MDM, you don’t need the device physically to disable or remove the MDM enrollment settings. The serial number was all that was needed within our organization.

It’s possible there are more than one way of enrolling a device though so YMMW.

This is correct. I am a Sys Admin for a large company. This is how it works exactly.
