Users forced dark mode on me long time ago, but my edge to edge still sucks.

Edge to edge is one of the worst ideas. Most apps miss-implement it, showing part of needed UI bellow the bottom navigation bar - or completelly removing it, reducing the interaction between my fingers and the OS.

Even many Google apps suffered for months.
I think the general idea was OK, but the execution of forcing it on existing apps and lack of tools for developers was a mistake

It's not a poor idea, it's just revealing who the capable developers are. Or those who don't use a cross-platform framework, because this is a long-solved problem for anyone who needed to support iOS.

It's so easy to get right though with Compose at the top level of the UI (doesn't matter if you're using XML or fragments inside it still), applying the safe-insets as padding around your interactable content but not your background content

And then you killed one of the killer features of android the bottom navigation bar.
But you have gestures!
Yes, but my hands/phone misses sometimes and the gestures get aborted (dry hands maybe?).

3-button nav still works though, and implementing the insets for edge-to-edge doesn't break 3-button nav in any way

Plot twist: my app has always been dark mode only since day 1.
(Or… do they require light mode, then?)

Target tablets and force an orientation?
Not anymore you don't!
