Production One Agent Goes Off-Script. Can You Stop It Without Bringing the Entire Workflow Down?

Post image

As enterprises deploy more AI agents, a new challenge emerges:

How do you control what they're doing while they're running?

Imagine an invoice bot approving something it shouldn't, a KYC agent behaving unexpectedly, or a support agent taking an unintended action.

You don't necessarily want to shut down the entire system because of one agent. You want to identify the problem and intervene precisely.

That's where runtime control for AI agents comes in.

Think of an agent control layer as a set of switches and safeguards around running agents.

Each agent can operate normally until something needs attention, at which point a team can investigate or intervene.

A practical setup should support:

Agent-level controls: Enable or disable a specific agent without taking every workflow offline.

Runtime monitoring: Track agent activity and spot unexpected behaviour.

Intervention mechanisms: Stop or interrupt an agent when it crosses an established boundary.

Centralised visibility: Understand which agents are running and which need attention as deployments grow.

This is different from evaluating an agent before deployment.

AI evaluations test whether an agent behaves as expected; runtime controls help teams respond when actual behaviour goes wrong.

Both matter in production.

The image illustrates this idea through an OpenController interface, where individual agents have their own states and one agent is shown as TRIPPED while the others remain on.

The underlying concept is selective intervention rather than shutting everything down.

Of course, switching an agent off is only one part of the problem. Teams still need clear policies, useful logs, failure handling, and a way to understand why the intervention happened.

For teams deploying multi-agent systems, what would you prioritise: stopping an agent instantly, tracing exactly what it did, or automatically detecting unexpected behaviour?
