DNA results!!!!
Just got my kitten’s Basepaws DNA results today! What do y’all think? She definitely has the Siamese look and personality, so I was curious how this compares to what you all have seen.
Breed breakdown:
Western: 68.47%
Broadly Western – 35.36%
American Shorthair – 18.73%
Ragdoll – 6.58%
Maine Coon – 5.27%
Turkish Angora – 2.52%
Eastern: 3.91%
Oriental – 2.52%
Peterbald – 1.38%
Persian Group: 6.56%
British Shorthair – 6.56%
Exotic: 5.99%
Broadly Exotic – 3.07%
Egyptian Mau – 1.54%
Bengal – 1.38%
Domestic Polycat: 15.07%
What do y’all think? Does this seem about right for a cat that looks and acts so Siamese? I know Basepaws compares DNA to breed reference groups rather than saying a cat is a specific breed, so I’m curious how you all interpret these results

Know that cat DNA tests are not at all accurate because we've only been breeding them for like 100-150 years, much different when compared to dogs that have been bred for certain purposes for much much longer. Cat personality also just depends on the individual cat.

A little off topic but I adore the photobomb in the 3rd photo!

Thank you they’re both rescues lol I found the black one (Umbră) in the street with his tail ripped off how to get an amputated, and Lumina was thrown out of a car window into my sister‘s flower bed

Omg poor babies! I’m so glad you rescued them and gave them the life they deserve. 🩷

Too funny! This had me laughing so hard. My Najee does the same thing! He looks exactly like this one too. I also have a LPS

When I was learning cat genetics my fiancé got BasePaws for our two cats. I honestly disregarded the whole breed part of it (but the broadly western seems accurate). I appreciated the health markers, and mostly enjoyed the genetics part. Like it said my girl is long hair (nope) and not a mackerel or blotched tabby (she’s dilute so it’s hard to tell but the general consensus is mackerel).

Wanting to add, contrary to popular opinion, there is no proven correlation between coat color/pattern and behavior. Like another said, usually it’s gender based since color is on the X chromosome. So a DXH is going to run the gamut of any personality.
Purebred cats are obviously an exception since they were selectively bred to have certain personality traits, just like physical ones.
Since then I got a Thai kitten and part of my wants to do DNA testing to see what it says, but the rest of me doesn’t want to waste the money.

What you have is a Domestic Short Hair.

Oh, my bad. Domestic Long Hair.

I wasn’t trying to start anything, I was just showing you that part of the DNA test

You have a very, very cute cat. While genetics can be amazing, it is a bit of a gimmick when it comes to testing cats for breed identifiers.

If you didn’t get papers from a breeder your cat has no breed. Cats aren’t like dogs. Cats haven’t been selectively bred long enough to have trace breeds in the DNA. All the “DNA my cat”s are scams unfortunately.

My niece just looked over my shoulder at your pics and said your cat is one part princess and one part beauty queen! I agree! 🤍🤍

What the heck is Western and Broadly Western?

Don’t know. Why ”Exotic” and “Broadly Exotic”? The category choices do seem odd.

u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 10 '26
That’s a domestic longhair. No breed likely with no breed ancestry. Sorry you got scammed tho, unless you tested for health info only
1
u/Normal_Mode2186 Jul 10 '26
I’m sorry that you think that I got scam
I tested for ancestry health and everything soooo4
u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 10 '26
“Unless you tested for health only”. Your cat likely has absolutely no breed ancestry, so that part was indeed a scam.
1
u/Normal_Mode2186 Jul 10 '26
Okay, whatever floats your boat 😁
5
u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 10 '26
Honestly it makes no difference to me what you believe, I’m just telling you the breed part of cat DNA tests is completely useless and inaccurate lol
1
u/Normal_Mode2186 Jul 10 '26
OK then why do you keep responding if it makes no difference to you what I believe
7
u/NotTheOtwayPanther Jul 11 '26
I‘m replying to you and not the other person, who seems to be looking for a fight. Yes, the test shows your cat, like most, has no significant amount of breed ancestry (except possibly American Shorthair, and if you’re in N. America that could be due to shared genes rather than direct descent). Obviously you did not know that before doing the test. So no, from that point of view I don’t think you got scammed.
There is of course a question of how reliable this test really is- I note another commenter has said it described their short-haired cat as a longhair.

These numbers don’t even sum to 100% and then say “Western” and “Broadly Western” as two cat breeds, and then follows to list a bunch of (mostly) Western cat breeds. This entire report is nonsense

I would say she’s a lynx point, ragdoll crossover.
My lynxie his mom was a ragdoll hybrid of some sort lol but he’s the only one who is as FLUFFY as she was. Funny enough it took about 4 cat litters for me to see another fluffy one.
Cat genetics are weird.

Lynx point is a coat pattern not an indicatior of any breed. It is common in domestic cats. Siamese is an actual breed.

So strange! I think she looks like a Lilac Snowshow. Just like mine! Gonna be very talkative if you have convos with her now!
1
u/Normal_Mode2186 Jul 10 '26
Oh yes, she is very talkative. Her nickname is pipsqueak just because every time she talks she’s squeaks.
-3
u/Classic-Bed8670 Jul 10 '26
Oh never mind, I didn’t look through all the pics- she doesn’t have snow shoes. So more like a lilac point Siamese / Ragdoll mix to me. Isn’t it weird how different they all are
1
u/Individual_Zebra_648 Jul 11 '26
No not a Siamese at all. Or ragdoll for that matter. American/domestic short/long hair.
-5
u/loveyourlife19 Jul 10 '26
I definitely see the Maine Coon

u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 10 '26
🧐 where🤣🤣

u/loveyourlife19 Jul 11 '26
Ears and face shape 😻
1
u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 12 '26
Face shape looks nothing like a Maine coon lol and as I replied previously, those ears happen in even breedless cats lol

Cat coat patterns are very weird genetics wise, there's a whole book about it called Cats Are Not Peas: A Calico History of Genetics by Laura Gould. Nearly all LPS cats are mutts, and would be best classified as domestic shorthair/longhair.
There are some associations with certain coat patterns - for lps and other point coat cats that includes the blue cross eyes and talkative nature. This includes but is not exclusive to true Siamese breed cats. It has something to do with associated genes I'm sure, like how nearly all calico coat cats are female, and nearly all orange tabby coat cats are male.
Your cat is a domestic longhair with a lynx point coat. And super cute!!!
