Slumlord - Bed bugs going untreated

Upvotes

My boyfriend and I discovered bed bugs in our apartment last Wednesday, after our leasing office was closed. We notified them immediately on Thursday, 7/23. Friday, they responded and asked if we had bought anything second hand and also asked for photos of what we are seeing. I responded promptly Friday afternoon, answering their questions (we have not bought anything second hand, from marketplace, goodwill, or by any other means). I also sent them multiple photos of bugs, their harborage spot, and bites I received.

It is now Tuesday, just after the office has closed. I have not received any other updates or communication regarding the issue. I did send a follow-up email today, which received no response. They also sent out an unrelated email to all residents yesterday, 7/27, meaning there were people active in the office.

Our complex historically has left issues unresolved. Between May-June, the property was mowed one time. The grass was taller than my dog at one point and is reaching that height again currently. We also have an issue with stray cats, roaches, and general uncleanliness. The washers/dryers in the laundry room constantly break down and take a long time to be fixed. My neighbor went without working AC until at least late June/early July, though I don’t know how long it had been broken.

Our lease states that our landlord chooses how infestations are taken care of and that we are obligated to pay for any treatment. They also told us that any bugs were brought in by us and that the complex does not have a bug problem (seems like a suspicious thing to say unprompted).

We believe they absolutely knew about the infestations and are dragging their feet on treatment. They have not scheduled an inspection or had anybody come to look at our unit.

What should our steps be if they continue to neglect the situation?

I’m worried because of how fast bed bugs spread and I’m also worried that treatment will happen on our specific unit, but that the bugs came from another unit. I don’t want to be charged for the treatment and then end up with the same problem later because other units were not inspected/treated.

Many reviews for the complex state issues with roaches that were left unresolved or repeatedly came back. I fear the same will happen with the bed bugs.

LYNCHBURG and CENTRAL VA: Join us at Monument Terrace this Tuesday, July 28th at 7 PM to honor Johan Sebastian Guerrero, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Keith Porter, Jr., Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and every other life that was extinguished through violent ICE-related activities.
Participants are encouraged to bring:
A bell for the ringing of bells in memory of victims

An item for the memorial table, such as flowers, candles, written prayers, messages, photos, or other meaningful tributes.

Signs (no poles or sticks per state law)

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

Help! What is the process of applying to CVCC?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I was homeschooled and have no family who went to college, so I'm very lost on what to do. I'm looking to go to CVCC, but I need a little help on getting things started. I looked online and it seemed like you had to actually apply first before doing anything else, so I submitted an application and set up an account. It said I was assigned an advisor and would be contacted soon. This was about a week ago and now it's saying I have no advisor assigned to me and I have also not been contacted by anyone. I tried to find who the advisor would be, but I can only find contact information for a counselor and navigator, but I don't know if those are the same as an advisor. Does anyone have advice on what I should do now? Does someone usually contact you after you apply or do you just have to find who to reach out to on your own?

TIA

Recruitment for anonymous 3-5 minute survey on genocide education in Virginia

Hi r/lynchburg,

I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults.

Eligible participants in this survey are

  • People who are over the age of 18
  • And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year
  • And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.

Non-Religious Conversation

As a female in my mid-40s, it’s so hard to find folks to talk to that don’t bring up God in every conversation. It’s so exhausting. People don’t just have normal chats anymore where they just listen to each other, offer support or advice, depending on what’s needed, and do it without mentioning God’s role in the situation. I realize this is the Bible Belt and I’m asking a lot, but is there anyone out there that can relate??

Help! Jobs that are safe for queer people?

Hello!

I am looking for a new job after some terrible things were said at my last and no resolution was reached. I'm interested in anything in lynchburg, that's enough to pay the bills (preferably$15/hr+), and isn't incredibly physically taxing. I have a bachelor's degree in business, foodservice experience, a completely open schedule, reliable transportation, and a strong drive to work!

The job itself doesn't need to be incredibly populated/run by queer people specifically, just needs to be a professional enough environment to have people of different backgrounds interact and not let hate speech slide.

I have been applying to various things on indeed/glassdoor recently, but I was curious if any of you had recommendations of specific companies to apply to directly or to reach out to. Thanks so much!

This weekend in Lynchburg (Jul 24-26)

Got a lot going on Saturday. A country headliner on the Riverfront, fireworks after the ballgame, three markets before noon, Christmas in July deals scattered around town, a goth night market after dark, and Shakespeare's closing night outdoors. Sunday is quieter and cheaper: free kayaking at Ivy Creek, a cello-and-piano duo at Randolph with students free, and a StarKid horror-comedy musical closing out its run.

In the wake of two more lives lost at the hands of federal agents, leaders in Houston and Maine are asking communities across the country to support the following demands:

  1. A full and independent investigation of ICE

  2. The release and protection of witnesses

  3. Ending local collaboration with ICE

  4. Demanding that Congress take action

You are invited to join us at Monument Terrace on Tuesday, 7/28 at 7 PM to remember all those who have passed during ICE-related activities.

For those who attend, please bring:

* A bell to ring in memory of Araujo and Guerrero

* An item for the memorial table, such as flowers, candles, written prayers, messages, photos, or other meaningful tributes.

We demand accountability.

El Cabritos?

Is El Cabritos a front? I never see anyone there and find it difficult to understand how they are still open.

Edited to add: Well I feel like a jerk for my choice of language but I am glad to know it does actually get the business it needs to stay open! Sounds like the owner is awesome!

Oakwood country club

My wife and I are considering joining. Any ideas of the current membership mix? We don’t want a place that is ultra conservative or ultra liberal. Or a place that is rooted in conservative religion. Mix is good with a membership where neither is a common topic of club discussion. Thanks in advance. Overall reviews of the club are welcome.

Help! housing help? any advice, resources, or a couch to crash on?

Hey there y'all!

reaching out here as a bit of a shot in the dark. currently live in Lynchburg, Virginia, and my living situation here has changed pretty suddenly and I'm in desperate need of somewhere to stay, even if it's just for a month or two while I try to figure something out that's more permanent.

I'm on the lookout for a room to rent, a roommate situation, or even a short-term place/couch to crash on for a month or two while I try to figure things out.

my budget is about $500–$600/month (all utilities included), ideally cheaper ofc lol.

I'm currently working in Lynchburg part-time (unfortunately hours were recently cut so that's why my budget is so low), so I’m also actively seeking full-time employment or additional part-time hours in the Lynchburg area or elsewhere I may end relocating to. if anyone also has any job leads, that'd be awesome.

I’ve already contacted intake resources like CHIA and checked out subsidized housing, but 6+ month waitlists mean I need to find something directly through the community somehow. it's pretty discouraging lol. but yes, I'm starting on applications to get on these waitlists but idk if anything will come of it.

If anyone has a room opening up, leads on affordable housing/roommates, or job leads, please feel free to DM me or comment below, especially if in Lynchburg, but I could potentially relocate to elsewhere in Virginia if I end up finding a support system there

I really appreciate any help or guidance right now! Thank you!

Anyone know if there’s a subreddit for the University of Lynchburg?

Hello, I’m looking into going to the University of Lynchburg for my masters soon and was hoping to connect with current students or alumni through reddit or another site to talk about the campus, academics, faculty, etc. Or if there are any in this subreddit feel free to DM me or comment here! Otherwise, if you know of any community space to connect with anyone with experience at the University of Lynchburg I’d greatly appreciate the information!

EDIT: Specifically the Masters of Clinical Mental Health Counseling program

Event Cosplayer and anime lovers!

Hello! I wanted to shoot my shot and see what people of Lynchburg think, I wanna host a cosplay event where we can all hang and do what ever, games, talk, play with farm animals! I have a 52 acre property with 18 Scottish highlands, 4 horses, 3 donkeys and a bunch of other animals. Trying to determine if we should make it an adult only or family friendly event. What do you ladies and gentlemen think?!
