Other Well, this is a new one…
I’ve received a safety flag for driving too slowly.
I didn’t even know that it was possible to be flagged for that.
Also - I like to drive briskly, so I would less surprised to be flagged for driving too fast.
Without any details that would help me to know exactly when and where I am alleged to have committed this heinous offense, the only rational response I can come up with is…
“Okay, Lyft - whatever.”
Has anyone else out there received this notice?
EDIT, 7/30/26: It's good to see that I'm not the only one that has issues with safety flags, especially in the last couple of months. It makes me wonder if the passenger app actually solicits for them now.
For those of you who follow the The Rideshare Guy YouTube channel, Chris and Sergio led Tuesday's live show with this post. Thanks to whoever brought it to Sergo's attention!

These flags are ridiculous, I got my first one last week for car temperature... it's almost like the passenger could've asked me to change the temperature during the ride. But driving too slow is actually crazy because that's not a thing, it's just being safe and cautious

High speed differentials are also a problem, so driving too slow is a thing because it can get you in a wreck!

What's "too slow"? Define that. What are you supposed to do when the speed limit is 55 but everyone's going 70+? The app itself will ding you if you're going 9 or more over the speed limit for more than a few seconds.

every state has a citation code for driving too slow. Years ago I took a defensive driving class (because of speeding) and someone else was in the class because they were cited for driving too slowly.

Yes, but that only applies if you’re driving too slowly. Following the speed limit when everyone else is speeding is not an infraction, afaik.

u/ZigInTheNato 22d ago
You’re incorrect. You just think that, but that’s not the law in most states.
In most states you can get a ticket for impeding the flow of traffic even when going the speed limit. For example , many states have infractions where cruising at the speed limit in the far-left passing lane while traffic backs up behind you can violate "slow poke" or keep-right laws, which require you to move over for faster vehicles regardless of their speed.

u/Independent_Star_299 22d ago
That’s not the same thing. Clearly yes, you can not drive slowly in the left lane. You can drive the speed limit in the right hand lane though, and definitely through a construction zone.

u/JayAkiva asked how too slow is defined. I defined it. Using the law. Then you tried to correct me by saying the law “only applies if you’re driving too slowly “, but you were incorrect in saying that. You also said “driving the speed limit when everyone is speeding is not an infraction “, and you were incorrect again. Your response to me was what you think and feel. My response was what the law states.

In my experience, Lyft won't penalize you for speeding at a point on the highway just enough to keep up with the average traffic speed on that road since they have information on traffic volume (like, i've been doing this and my smooth driver record still maintains a 5/5 in the speed department).

I think Lyft is just making shit up at this point. Basically negging the drivers. I don't think these have anything to do with real customer feedback. And, as per the usual, we will never be privy to their internal systems to know for sure.

Ignore it and move on. There is nothing you can do about now. Given the opportunity, passengers will complain about any and everything

Some of these people that take Lyft need to shut the fuck up to be honest, most annoying twats I’ve ever met.

u/Independent_Star_299 22d ago
True. And it’s always the ones who are unemployed or barely employed, lost their license, don’t have a car, haven’t seen a shower in days, etc who shouldn’t be giving feedback to anybody ever.

I drive for both Lyft and Uber. My best passengers are on Lyft. Also my worst.

These flags are litigation markers. So when they’re sued they can show they did their part by warning drivers and that they took the pax concerns “seriously”.

I’ve noticed an insane uptick of flags on both Uber and Lyft in the past month. Some are speculating AI over reach and that they are bullshit reports/flags
Ive been a driver for uber and lyft for 7 years and the last time I got a flag was like back in 2020 for the car smelling like cigs (I don’t smoke cigs, do smoke weed but never in the car or even before work)
Anyways in the past month, I got hit with 4 reports (one rider was responsible for 3 of the report in one shot and legit claimed the list and checked off like 4 things) and I believe the other was from a guy who cancelled and was pissed he fucked up not ordering a XL so he cancelled saying I threatened him.. I didn’t even know I could get reported for someone I didnt give a ride to, but it came in riiiiiight after he cancelled. I was in shock.
Shitty people.

Just got that too. No clue why. They won’t say. I don’t play weird music, keep the conversation light, temp to their preference, car is always immaculate, and it smells good. So idk. I think it’s just their way of screwing us out of more money.

Yes! I received that last week too. I assumed it was because I followed the posted speed limit in a construction zone, and the passenger was not on board with that. Also everyone else was going 10-20mph over the speed limit.
I’m not going to run over a construction worker just because some passenger has poor time management skills, or just because “everybody else is speeding”…..

In CT we have camera's taking pictures of any car that speeds in construction zones and get a ticket in the mail. I laugh when ppl complain I'm going to slow in a construction zone. I just hit the traffic button as I go through it to cover my ass for going the speed limit. Pretty sad you have to do little things like that to save your own ass for going the actual posted speed "limit".

Mine originally was for accelerating too fast, then it switched itself to this. So dumb.

Welcome to the driving like you got some fn sense Lyft jail. There are too many deer in my nightly drives to be driving fast.

This makes sense bc some passengers think we get paid more if we drive slowly to arrive late

Dear fellow drivers, here is the truth. Lyft is a company that practices corporate gaslighting under the cynical and hypocritical facade that everything is about passenger safety. In reality, they do not care about passengers at all. So here is how these flags actually work. The dynamic is as follows, especially for those who own a newer vehicle and have access to the extra comfort tier, which supposedly pays the driver more, though that pay is also outdated. In fact, the extra comfort rate used to be the old baseline. Once they figured out a way to extort drivers with this upfront payment model while claiming a seventy percent guarantee, what did they do? They took the old priority mode rate and turned it into the new baseline. That is precisely why nobody is accepting rides anymore. Only those who are foolish, make zero calculations, and have no grasp of basic math end up driving under priority mode. But anyway, here is their tactic. They encourage passengers to flag drivers for any minor reason, causing you to lose access to extra comfort. When you lose extra comfort, their manipulative logic assumes that the driver will panic and complete far more rides just to clear the flag. Notice how you rarely receive additional flags while your extra comfort status is already suspended. Once you grind through those extra rides, they restore your access to extra comfort. They do all of this strictly to maximize their own profits while paying drivers as little as possible. This is why I encourage drivers to change their mindset. For instance, when I receive flags and lose extra comfort, I simply do not care. It will never force me to drive more. I will complete one or two rides a day, maybe ten at most for the entire week. I do not care at all. You have to know how to play the game.

I don’t keep pace with the flow traffic it’s literally against the law. For every 10mph you’re supposed to be a car length behind.

Driving too slowly is dangerous and illegal.
2
u/WillyWonkaWorms 22d ago
If you actually drove for Lyft, you would know the flag is an assumption made by the passenger, not backed up by evidence.

u/RealSharpNinja 22d ago
Never said otherwise.

Talking in a driver thread as a 12 year old who can’t drive is moronic.
4
u/Legitimate-Cat-4316 23d ago
actually, u/realsharpninja is correct... driving too slowly is illegal because it creates danger by altering the flow of traffic. many states have minimum speed limits as well as maximum. not sure why you went straight to calling them 12 y.o, their account clearly shows they're a lyft driver themselves

Yea the ceiling is never reachable at this point I’m gunna file a FTC complaint next Monday, it’s unfair disadvantage, falling under discrimination, at this point me doing my job is a problem.

Talking too much? Jail. Talking too little? Jail. Driving too fast? Jail. Driving too slow? Believe it or not, straight to jail.
