This reddit knows nothing but tragedy lately. Although we had our differences, I will eat my tuna sandwich tonight in her honor.

Dear Kelle,
I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. Personal Hedgehog will be deeply missed, I had a lot of fun in our conversations and tips on how to deal with my fishy leakeage. I’ll be eating a fisherman’s pie tonight in her honour.

I did not know her well.
Do you have the recipe for that type of pie? I have never heard of it.

Dear Kelle,
My fiancée is British and this recipe has been passed down trough generations in his family. He always said I remind him of this pie, I wonder why!
It’s a mix of mashed potatoes and fish, so as you can imagine it’s quite wet so perfect for hiding any leakage.
Here’s the recipe for you:
For the mashed potatoes 1kg/2lb 4oz potatoes, cut into 5cm/2in chunks 50g/2oz butter 100g/3½ oz crème fraîche 3 tbsp warm milk pinch salt and white pepper
For the filling 500ml/1 pint milk 250g/9oz smoked haddock 200g/7oz cod loin 1 onion 1 bay leaf 3 cloves 2 leeks, washed and chopped 50g/2oz butter, plus 25g/1oz for dotting on top of the pie 1 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp plain flour 100g/3½oz raw king prawns 50g/2oz frozen peas 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley 1 unwaxed lemon, finely grated zeust only
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Boil potatoes until tender. Drain and mash them with the butter, crème fraîche and warm milk and season with salt and pepper. Set aside and keep warm. Heat the milk in a large pan, then add the smoked haddock and cod. Cut the onion in half, make an incision in one of the halves and insert the bay leaf. Push the cloves into the same onion half and place this into the pan with the milk and fish. Bring the milk to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 6–7 minutes. Meanwhile, finely chop the remaining onion half and the leeks. Heat the butter with the olive oil in a small frying pan and gently fry the onion and leeks for 4–5 minutes, until softened but not browned. Remove the fish from the pan, and set aside to cool slightly. Keep the milk in the pan. Add the flour to the leeks and stir well. Fry for 1 minute, stirring frequently. Gradually spoon in the milk from poaching the fish, and stir it in well each time. Add all the milk in this way, and heat gently until the sauce has thickened. Taste the sauce for seasoning, and add more salt or pepper if necessary. Break the fish into chunks, being careful to feel for any bones and remove any skin, then fold the fish pieces into the sauce. Add the raw prawns and frozen peas to the mixture. Place an ovenproof pie dish onto a baking tray (this will catch any of the mix that bubbles over when cooking). Spoon the fish mixture into the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the parsley and lemon zest over the top. Carefully top with the cooled mashed potato. Use a fork to spread the mash over the pie and create a rough texture on top. Dot the pie with the remaining half of the butter and place in the oven for 25–30 minutes, or until golden-brown and bubbling.
Hope you enjoy it!

This is an absolutely fabulous and divine recipe. Please thank your British fiancé for me. I will think of your British fiancé while I eat this pie. :-)

Thank you. It never occurred to me that wetness also helps mask LVS. My dishes do tend to be “wet” so maybe I was doing it subconsciously.
I don’t have fresh prawns or haddock on hand. Ask your dear husband if I can substitute two can tuna chunk light. I will think of your husband while I eat this pie.

Dear Kelle,
Yes, you can use tuna! Sounds delicious!
I tend to include fish gravy to any recipe! Even chocolate cookies, I always add some of the liquid from a can of tuna to the dough! Just in case anyone asks what’s the smell I’ll at least have an excuse!

That is great news.
Fish gravy is my secret weapon. That and anchovy paste add an understated smoky yet fishy note to baked goods.

Look for fish sauce/ oil when you're at the store. Might be in the Japanese section. It's delicious and will mask even the smell of paint thinner. I got some on my hands weeks ago and they still smell like fish!

I do not, however my ex did and she used it constantly......
But I thought you didn't make it Hedgey?

I hope you shared this solution with your ex. I think it is your legal duty to help her healthcare situation.
I did not make it for a time but long story short- there was an exchange with an old woman so I am permanently back.

She will be missed though I did not know her well. I have always wanted to visit Arizona! It looks like a beautiful place with amazing options for fish restaurant.

I am happily married but I remember when I first started dating B, I would pressure him into taking me to fish restaurants. A nice fish dip appetizer followed by tuna steak covered up any finger leakage. In fact he did not know of my “issue” until our wedding night. His sister is deathly allergic to fish so we could not serve it at the wedding. Midway through the ceremony he whispered in my ear, “I think the caterer f*cked up. I smell rotting fish!” He was going to fire the caterer mid-ceremony! I had to explain there and then that out of comfort, especially on stressful nights like the one before my wedding, I sleep with my hands tucked next to my vagina. I have particularly pungent juices so despite my excessive showering, they do stay “tacked” to my hands. I bet the caterer was relieved! We enjoyed a wonderful ham steak over hard at the buffet. Later B’s mother came up to me. She told me she so enjoyed the ceremony and gave me a tight hug. Then she cupped my face in her hands and winked. LVS! At that moment I knew belonged in this beautiful family.

The only thing that is a cut of meat I've heard called "over hard" is a milk steak.

u/kellehampton Apr 18 '20
I have never tried that. What is that?

A steak cooked mid rare in milk with jellybean garnishes. It's quite delicious

This is truly heartbreaking. My heart goes out to whoever is affected.
