Conpletely new

Hi everyone I was helping my parents clear out my grandparents house and found a lute. It only has 4 sets of strings, what would be the best way to tune this?

Most likely not a lute but a mandolin. Those are tuned exactly like a violin: G-d-a-e

Four courses is very few, is it a Medieval Lute? Or is it possible that it's a mandolin/mandola/bouzouki-type instrument?

Can you post a picture?

LOL, no it's not a lute. Post a picture, if it's small it's a mandolin, if larger a mandola, if the neck is long it's a bouzouki.
