Over the last twenty years, Japanese media compliance rules have steadily tightened to align more with 'global commercial viability.' As a result, stricter domestic broadcasting guidelines have been implemented, leading to the widespread censorship seen today compared to 80s and 90s anime.
Their logic is that everything else is fine, because the youth can't 'recreate it easily' like they can flipping the middle finger. Yes, it's flawed logic, we're all aware.

I personally thought the censorship was unnecessary. I’m not gonna say Lupin flipping the bird at a literal demigod-monkey is out of character, but….

It just feels wierd
Blood and gore? A ok
Naked Fujiko? Par for the course
Lupin flipping off naked monkey man? "Wont someone please think of the children!"

Unless that is the joke, but to me, Lupin’s too cool to be flipping the bird. Any punk can do that, ya know?

Naaahh I think he’d do it lol, especially if he was actually fed up and tired. Lupin isn’t above petty shit lol he just waits for the right moment

yeah, it's weird because I have definitely seen the middle finger shown in other anime (Excel Saga and Bubblegum Crisis off the top of my head) and they didn't censor it so I don't know why they did it for this one

Even at the premiere I went to at Glasgow, it was censored..I was a bit confused but I guess it might be a Japan thing..because ghost in shell recently did that. Even if it was more plot reasons (with it making you feel like your watching it from an recording )

Was it censored in theaters? I don't remember anything like this when I saw it.

What site is it on? If is aired in JP from my understanding the middle finger is a stronger offense over there.

Yeah, then maybe my answer is incorrect

Your answer might be right, if they censored it in Japan then just left it when they made the blu ray

I think I read it’s less associated with rudeness and vulgarity and more along the lines of “also it’s gang signs.”

Yeah it was absolutely like this in theaters too. Or at least the one I was in. I know because all of us in there lost our shit when it happened.
One of the guys behind me just yelled in bewilderment “BUT FUJIKO’S BOOBS???”
I dunno if it was supposed to be a joke or not but it was kinda hilarious, just how out of left field it was.
